[Machine] We sent the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in a military expedition, and he said, "If you capture so-and-so and so-and-so, burn them with fire." The next day, he sent for us and said, "I had commanded you to burn these two men, but then I realized that no one should be tortured with fire except Allah. So, if you capture them, kill them."  

الدارمي:٢٥٠٤ – أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عُمَرَ بْنِ أَبَانَ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحِيمِ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ إِسْحَاقَ عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ أَبِي حَبِيبٍ عَنْ بُكَيْرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الْأَشَجِّ عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ الدَّوْسِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ الدَّوْسِيِّ قَالَ

بَعَثَنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فِي سَرِيَّةٍ فَقَالَ «إِنْ ظَفِرْتُمْ بِفُلَانٍ وَفُلَانٍ فَحَرِّقُوهُمَا بِالنَّارِ» حَتَّى إِذَا كَانَ الْغَدُ بَعَثَ إِلَيْنَا فَقَالَ «إِنِّي كُنْتُ أَمَرْتُكُمْ بِتَحْرِيقِ هَذَيْنِ الرَّجُلَيْنِ ثُمَّ رَأَيْتُ أَنَّهُ لَا يَنْبَغِي لِأَحَدٍ أَنْ يُعَذِّبَ بِالنَّارِ إِلَّا اللَّهُ فَإِنْ ظَفِرْتُمْ بِهِمَا فَاقْتُلُوهُمَا»

"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent us with an army and said: 'If you see so-and-so, and so-and-so' referring to two men from the Quraish: 'then burn them with fire.' Then, upon our departure, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'I ordered you to burn so-and-so, and so-and-so with fire, and indeed, none punishes with fire except Allah. أحمد:٩٨٤٤ – حَدَّثَنَا حَجَّاجٌ عَنْ لَيْثٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي بُكَيْرُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ عَنْ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ يَسَارٍ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ

أَنَّهُ قَالَ بَعَثَنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فِي بَعْثٍ وَقَالَ إِنْ وَجَدْتُمْ فُلَانًا وَفُلَانًا لِرَجُلَيْنِ مِنْ قُرَيْشٍ فَأَحْرِقُوهُمَا بِالنَّارِ ثُمَّ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ حِينَ أَرَدْنَا الْخُرُوجَ إِنِّي كُنْتُ أَمَرْتُكُمْ أَنْ تُحْرِقُوا فُلَانًا وَفُلَانًا بِالنَّارِ وَإِنَّ النَّارَ لَا يُعَذِّبُ بِهَا إِلَّا اللهُ فَإِنْ وَجَدْتُمُوهُمَا فَاقْتُلُوهُمَا

"عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ قَالَ: بَعَثَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ سَرِيَّةً أنا فِيهم فَقَالَ: أَمَا إِن ظَفِرْتُم بِهَبَّارِ بْنِ الأسْوَدِ وَبنَافِعِ بنِ عَبْد القَيْس فَحَرِّقُوهُمَا بِالنَّارِ، فَلَمَّا كَانَ مِنْ الغَدِ بَعثَ إِلَيْنَا فَقَالَ: إِنِّي كُنْتُ أَمَرْتُكُمْ بِتَحرِيقِ الرَّجُلَيْنِ إنْ أَخَذْتُمُوهُمَا، ثُمَّ رأَيْتُ أنَّه لَا يَنْبَغي لأَحَدٍ أَنْ يُعَذِّبَ بِالنَّارِ إلَّا الله، فَإِنْ ظَفِرْتُم بِهمَا فَأقتُلُوهُمَا".
