bukhari:4789Ḥibbān b. Mūsá > ʿAbdullāh > ʿĀṣim al-Aḥwal > Muʿādhah > ʿĀʾishah

ʿAisha said, "Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to take the permission of that wife with whom he was supposed to stay overnight if he wanted to go to one other than her, after this Verse was revealed:-- "You (O Muhammad) can postpone (the turn of) whom you will of them (your wives) and you may receive any (of them) whom you will; and there is no blame on you if you invite one whose turn you have set aside (temporarily). (33.51) I asked Aisha, "What did you use to say (in this case)?" She said, "I used to say to him, "If I could deny you the permission (to go to your other wives) I would not allow your favor to be bestowed on any other person."

I felt jealous of the women who offered themselves to Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: Then when Allah, the Exalted and Glorious, revealed this:" You may defer any one of them you wish, and take to yourself any you wish; and if you desire any you have set aside (no sin is chargeable to you)" (xxxiii. 51), I ('A'isha.) said: It seems to me that your Lord hastens to satisfy your desire.

" Thou mayest put off whom thou pleasest of them, and take for thee whom thou pleasest" (xxxiii. 5). Mu'adha said to her: What did you say to Messenger of Allah ﷺ when he sought your permission? The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to aske our permission on the day he had to stay with one of his wives (by turns) after the following Qur'anic verse was revealed: "You may distance those whom you like, and draw close to those whom you like" [33:51]. The narrator Mu'adhah said: I said to her: What did you say to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ? She said: I used to say: If had an option for that, I would not preferred anyone to myself.

So Allah revealed {You may defer any of them you wish and take to yourself any you wish. And if you desire any you have set aside, there is no blame upon you} [Al-Ahzab: 51] to you. It is up to you whom you wish and whom you desire from those whom you have set aside, and there is no blame upon you.’ She said, ‘Verily, I see that your Lord hastens to fulfill your desire.'"
