The "lies" of Ibrahim for the sake of Allah

bukhari:3358Muḥammad b. Maḥbūb > Ḥammād b. Zayd > Ayyūb > Muḥammad > Abū Hurayrah

Abraham did not tell a lie except on three occasion. Twice for the Sake of Allah when he said, "I am sick," and he said, "(I have not done this but) the big idol has done it." The (third was) that while Abraham and Sarah (his wife) were going (on a journey) they passed by (the territory of) a tyrant. Someone said to the tyrant, "This man (i.e. Abraham) is accompanied by a very charming lady." So, he sent for Abraham and asked him about Sarah saying, "Who is this lady?" Abraham said, "She is my sister." Abraham went to Sarah and said, "O Sarah! There are no believers on the surface of the earth except you and I. This man asked me about you and I have told him that you are my sister, so don't contradict my statement." The tyrant then called Sarah and when she went to him, he tried to take hold of her with his hand, but (his hand got stiff and) he was confounded. He asked Sarah. "Pray to Allah for me, and I shall not harm you." So Sarah asked Allah to cure him and he got cured. He tried to take hold of her for the second time, but (his hand got as stiff as or stiffer than before and) was more confounded. He again requested Sarah, "Pray to Allah for me, and I will not harm you." Sarah asked Allah again and he became alright. He then called one of his guards (who had brought her) and said, "You have not brought me a human being but have brought me a devil." The tyrant then gave Hajar as a girl-servant to Sarah. Sarah came back (to Abraham) while he was praying. Abraham, gesturing with his hand, asked, "What has happened?" She replied, "Allah has spoiled the evil plot of the infidel (or immoral person) and gave me Hajar for service." (Abu Huraira then addressed his listeners saying, "That (Hajar) was your mother, O Bani Ma-is-Sama (i.e. the Arabs, the descendants of Ishmael, Hajar's son).

Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) never told a lie but only thrice: two times for the sake of Allah (for example, his words): "I am sick," and his words: "But it was the big one amongst them which has done that" and because of Sara (his wife). He had come in a land inhabited by haughty and cruel men along with Sara. She was very good-looking amongst the people, so he said to her: If these people were to know that you are my wife they would snatch you away from me, so if they ask you tell them that you are my sister and in fact you are my sister in Islam, and I do not know of any other Muslim in this land besides I and you. And when they entered that land the tyrants came to see her and said to him (the king): 'There comes to your land a woman, whom you alone deserve to possess', so he (the king) sent someone (towards her) and she was brought to him, and Ibrahim (peace be upon him) stood in prayer. When she visited him (the tyrant king came) he could help but stretch his hand towards her and his hand was tied up. He said: 'Supplicate to Allah so that He may release my hand and I will do no harm to you.' She did that and the man repeated (the same highhandedness) and his hand was again tied up more tightly than on the first occasion. He said the same thing to her again, and she again did that (supplicated), but he repeated (the same highhandedness and his hands were tied up more tightly than on the previous occasion). He then again said: 'Supplicate your Lord so that He may set my hand free; by Allah I shall do no harm to you.' She did and his hand was freed. Then he called the person who had brought her and said to him: 'You have brought to me the satan and you have not brought to me a human being, so turn them out from my land,' and he gave Hajar as a gift to her. She returned (along with Hajar) and when Ibrahim (peace be upon him) saw her, he said: 'How have you returned?' She said: 'With full safety (have I returned). Allah held the hand of that debauch and he gave me a maid-servant.' Abu Huraira said: 'O sons of the rain of the sky, she is your mother.'

[Machine] The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: "Ibrahim (Abraham) never lied except on three occasions. Two of them were in regards to Allah. The first was when he said, 'Indeed, I am sick' and the second was when he said, 'Rather, it was done by this biggest of them.' Ibrahim passed by a tyrant ruler accompanied by his wife, Sarah. It was said to the ruler, 'There is a man here with the most beautiful woman among the people.' So he sent for him, and when Ibrahim came to him, the ruler asked him and Ibrahim told him she was his sister. Then, the ruler came to her and said, 'Indeed, he has told me about you, that you are his sister, and indeed I married you off to him, so do not lie to me.' She said, 'Indeed, this man is my brother. He told you the truth, for indeed I am his sister in the Book of Allah, so do not accuse me of lying.' When he saw her, Ibrahim said, 'Indeed, this man is a great tyrant.' Sarah supplicated to Allah, so the ruler was affected and said, 'Pray to Allah for me and for you, and I promise you that I will never harm you again.' So Sarah prayed for him and he was cured. Then he came to her again but she was taken in a more severe way than the first time. Ibrahim said the same as he said before, and Sarah said the same as she said before. When he saw her, Ibrahim said, 'Indeed, this man is a great tyrant.' Sarah supplicated to Allah, so the ruler was affected and said, 'Pray to Allah for me and for you, and I promise you that I will never harm you again.' So Sarah prayed for him and he was cured. Then he came to her a third time, and she was taken in an even more severe way than the previous times. Ibrahim said the same as he said before, and Sarah said the same as she said before. When he saw her, Ibrahim said, 'Indeed, this man is a great tyrant.' Sarah supplicated to Allah, so the ruler was affected and said, 'Pray to Allah for me and for you, and I promise you that I will never harm you again.' So she prayed for him and he was cured. Then, he sent for Ibrahim and said to him, 'You did not bring a human being to me. Rather, you have brought me a devil.' So Hajar said, 'Enough of Allah's evil upon the disbelievers and the sinful. Ibrahim's mother, Hajar'." Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, used to say when narrating this Hadith: "That was your mother, O Sons of the water of the sky." The insignificant person lengthened the sound of the 'N' in it."

[Machine] "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said that Ibrahim did not lie except in three instances, two of which were concerning the attributes of Allah. One was his statement, 'Indeed, I am ill' (Surah As-Saaffat, 37:89), and the other was his statement, 'Rather, this [largest of them] has done it'(Surah Al-Anbiya, 21:63). He says this when he was journeying through the land of the tyrants and oppressors, and he stopped at a certain place. A man from the tribe of the tyrants approached him and said, 'Indeed, a man has arrived here in your land, accompanied by a woman who is among the best of people. So send [a message] to him.' Ibrahim asked, 'Who is this woman?' The man replied, 'She is my sister.' Ibrahim said, 'Go and send her to me.' He then went to Sarah and said, 'This tyrant has asked me about you, so I informed him that you are my sister. Therefore, do not deny it when we come before him, for indeed you are my sister according to the Book of Allah ﷻ, and there is no Muslim on earth except for me and you.' He then took her with him and Ibrahim stood to pray. When she entered upon him, he inclined towards her and desired her. He grabbed her forcefully, and she said, 'Invoke Allah for me, and do not harm me.' So she supplicated for him and he released her. This happened twice, and on the third time, he grabbed her even harder. He then mentioned the two previous occurrences, and she said, 'Invoke Allah for me, and do not harm me.' So she supplicated for him and he released her. He then called her closer and said, 'Indeed, you have not brought me a human being, but you have brought me a shaytan. Get out and accept (her) hajj gift.' She left, and he accepted her hajj gift. When Ibrahim felt her presence, he stopped his prayer and said, 'O Satan!' She replied, 'Allah has sufficed your adversary, and Hajar has helped me.' Abdullah ibn Awf then narrated this story."

[Machine] Ibrahim ﷺ never lied except three times, two of which were about Allah Himself, when he looked at the stars and said, "I am sick" [Surah As-Saffat, verse 89], and when he said in Surah Al-Anbiya, "Rather, this one did it, their chief did" [Surah Al-Anbiya, verse 63]. He also came to a king, accompanied by a woman, and inquired about her. The king informed him that she was his sister, so Ibrahim told her, "Say to him that you are my sister, so that he may treat me better or drive you away." When Ibrahim met her, he said, "This man has asked me about you, and I have told him that you are my sister and indeed you are my sister in the Book of Allah, but there is no believer on the earth except me and you and neither me nor you other than that and that he has commanded you to come to him." She replied, "Then I will come to him." When the king looked at her, he was struck by her beauty and said, "Pray for me and for you that I do not come back to you." Ibrahim responded, "Leave him." The king tried again, but Ibrahim told her to continue refusing. The king then ordered her to be given food and provided with a maidservant named Hajar. When Ibrahim saw her, he said, "It's okay." The woman said, "May Allah protect me from the deceit of the disbelieving oppressor" and continued to serve Ibrahim. Abu Hurairah said, "That woman was your mother, O children of the people of the sky's water, and her voice made the son of 'Uwn humble."

bayhaqi:15144Abū ʿAbdullāh al-Ḥāfiẓ > Abū ʿAbdullāh Muḥammad b. Yaʿqūb > Muḥammad b. Ismāʿīl b. Mihrān > Abū al-Ṭāhir > Ibn Wahb > Jarīr b. Ḥāzim > Ayyūb al-Sakhtiyānī > Muḥammad b. Sīrīn > Abū Hurayrah ؓ

Allah held the hand of that debauch and he gave me a maid-servant.' Abu Huraira said: 'O sons of the rain of the sky, she is your mother.' (Using translation from Muslim 2371)
