I asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about the hyena. He replied: It is game, and if one who is wearing ihram (pilgrim's robe) hunts it, he should give a sheep as atonement.

سَأَلْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَنِ الضَّبُعِ فَقَالَ هُوَ صَيْدٌ وَيُجْعَلُ فِيهِ كَبْشٌ إِذَا صَادَهُ الْمُحْرِمُ

I asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about the hyena. He replied: It is game, and if one who is wearing ihram (pilgrim's robe) hunts it, he should give a sheep as atonement. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 3801)

سُئِلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَنِ الضَّبُعِ فَقَالَ «هُوَ صَيْدٌ وَفِيهِ كَبْشٌ إِذَا أَصَابَهُ الْمُحْرِمُ»

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The hyena is a prey, so if it is caught by a person in the state of ihram (pilgrim sanctity), there is a compensation of a mature sheep and it can be eaten."

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «الضَّبُعُ صَيْدٌ فَإِذَا أَصَابَهُ الْمُحْرِمُ فَفِيهِ جَزَاءً كَبْشٌ مُسِنٌّ وَيُؤْكَلُ»

[AI] The translation of the sentence "سُئِلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَنِ الضَّبُعِ فَقَالَ هِيَ صَيْدٌ وَفِيهَا كَبْشٌ" into English is: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was asked about the wolf, and he said it is a game [i.e., hunted animal] and contains a lamb [i.e., preys on lambs]."

«سُئِلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَنِ الضَّبُعِ فَقَالَ هِيَ صَيْدٌ وَفِيهَا كَبْشٌ»

"الضَّبُعُ صَيدٌ فَإِذَا أَصَابَهُ الْمُحْرِمُ فَفِيهِ جَزَاءٌ: كَبْشٌ مُسنٌّ وَيُؤْكَلُ ".

"الضَّبُعُ صَيدٌ فَكُلْهَا وَفِيهَا كَبْشٌ مُسِنٌّ إِذَا أَصَابَهَا الْمُحْرِمُ ".
