I was a man who used to give (riding-beasts) on hire for this purpose (for travelling during the pilgrimage) and the people would tell (me): Your hajj is not valid. So I met Ibn Umar and told him: AbuAbdurRahman, I am a man who gives (riding-beast) on hire for this purpose (i.e. for hajj), and the people tell me: Your hajj is not valid. Ibn Umar replied: Do you not put on ihram (the pilgrim dress), call the talbiyah (labbayk), circumambulate the Ka'bah, return from Arafat and lapidate jamrahs? I said: Why not? Then he said: Your hajj is valid. a man came to the Prophet ﷺ and asked him the same question you have asked me. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ kept silence and did not answer him till this verse came down: "It is no sin for you that you seek the bounty of your Lord." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent for him and recited this verse to him and said: Your hajj is valid.  

فَإِنَّ لَكَ حَجًّا جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَسَأَلَهُ عَنْ مِثْلِ مَا سَأَلْتَنِي عَنْهُ فَسَكَتَ عَنْهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَلَمْ يُجِبْهُ حَتَّى نَزَلَتْ هَذِهِ الآيَةُ { لَيْسَ عَلَيْكُمْ جُنَاحٌ أَنْ تَبْتَغُوا فَضْلاً مِنْ رَبِّكُمْ } فَأَرْسَلَ إِلَيْهِ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَقَرَأَ عَلَيْهِ هَذِهِ الآيَةَ وَقَالَ لَكَ حَجٌّ  

[Machine] I asked Ibn Umar, "We are immigrants, do we have to perform Hajj?" He replied, "Don't you circumambulate the Kaaba, go to Al-Muḍarif, throw the pebbles, and shave your heads?" We said, "Yes." Ibn Umar said, "A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and asked him about what you just asked me, but he did not give him a response until Jibril ﷺ came down with this verse: 'There is no blame upon you for seeking bounty from your Lord.' (Quran 2:198) So the Prophet ﷺ called him and said, 'You are all performing Hajj.'"  

قُلْتُ لِابْنِ عُمَرَ أِنَّا نُكْرِي فَهَلْ لَنَا مِنْ حَجٍّ؟ قَالَ أَلَيْسَ تَطُوفُونَ بِالْبَيْتِ وَتَأْتُونَ الْمُعَرَّفَ وَتَرْمُونَ الْجِمَارَ وَتَحْلِقُونَ رُءُوسَكُمْ؟ قَالَ قُلْنَا بَلَى فَقَالَ ابْنُ عُمَرَ جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَسَأَلَهُ عَنِ الَّذِي سَأَلْتَنِي فَلَمْ يُجِبْهُ حَتَّى نَزَلَ عَلَيْهِ جِبْرِيلُ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ بِهَذِهِ الْآيَةِ {لَيْسَ عَلَيْكُمْ جُنَاحٌ أَنْ تَبْتَغُوا فَضْلًا مِنْ رَبِّكُمْ} [البقرة 198] فَدَعَاهُ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ فَقَالَ أَنْتُمْ حُجَّاجٌ

أَلَسْتَ تُحْرِمُ وَتُلَبِّي وَتَطُوفُ وَتُفِيضُ مِنْ عَرَفَاتٍ وَتَرْمِي الْجِمَارَ؟ قَالَ بَلَى قَالَ فَإِنَّ لَكَ حَجًّا رَجُلٌ أَتَى إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَسَأَلَهُ عَنْ مِثْلِ مَا سَأَلْتَنِي عَنْهُ فَسَكَتَّ عَنْهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَلَمْ يُجِبْهُ حَتَّى نَزَلَتْ هَذِهِ الْآيَةُ {لَيْسَ عَلَيْكُمْ جُنَاحٌ أَنْ تَبْتَغُوا فَضْلًا مِنْ رَبِّكُمْ} [البقرة 198] فَأَرْسَلَ إِلَيْهِ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَقَرَأَ هَذِهِ الْآيَةَ عَلَيْهِ وَقَالَ «لَكَ حَجٌّ»  

[Machine] I was a man with a disheveled appearance, and people used to tell me that I did not have the means to perform Hajj. So, I met Ibn Umar and said, "O Abu Abdur Rahman, I am a man with a disheveled appearance, and people tell me that I do not have the means to perform Hajj." He asked me, "Don't you perform Tawaf, Sa'i, and throw pebbles at the Jamrah?" I said, "Yes." He said, "Then you have performed Hajj." A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and asked him the same question as I did, but the Prophet ﷺ remained silent and did not answer him until this verse was revealed: "There is no sin for you if you seek the bounty of your Lord." Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent someone to him, recited this verse to him, and said, "You have performed Hajj."  

كُنْتُ رَجُلًا أَكْرِي فِي هَذَا الْوَجْهِ وَكَانَ نَاسٌ يَقُولُونَ لِي أَنْ لَيْسَ لَكَ حَجٌّ فَلَقِيتُ ابْنَ عُمَرَ فَقُلْتُ يَا أَبَا عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ إِنِّي لَرَجُلٌ أَكْرِي فِي هَذَا الْوَجْهِ وَإِنَّ نَاسًا يَقُولُونَ لِي إِنَّهُ لَيْسَ لَكَ حَجٌّ قَالَ أَلَيْسَ تُحْرِمُ وَتُلَبِّي وَتَطُوفُ بِالْبَيْتِ وَتُفِيضُ مِنْ عَرَفَاتٍ وَتَرْمِي الْجِمَارَ؟ قَالَ قُلْتُ بَلَى قَالَ فَإِنَّ لَكَ حَجًّا جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَسَأَلَهُ عَنْ مِثْلِ مَا سَأَلْتَنِي عَنْهُ فَسَكَتَ عَنْهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَلَمْ يُجِبْهُ حَتَّى نَزَلَتْ هَذِهِ الْآيَةُ {لَيْسَ عَلَيْكُمْ جُنَاحٌ أَنْ تَبْتَغُوا فَضْلًا مِنْ رَبِّكُمْ} [البقرة 198] فَأَرْسَلَ إِلَيْهِ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَرَأَ عَلَيْهِ هَذِهِ الْآيَةَ ثُمَّ قَالَ لَكَ حَجٌّ
