[Machine] Omar's letter came to us while we were in Khanqeen. The crescent moons vary in size. So, if you happen to see the crescent moon during the day, do not break your fast until the evening, unless two Muslim men testify that they saw it the previous evening.  

البيهقي:٧٩٨٢ – أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ وَأَبُو سَعِيدِ بْنُ أَبِي عَمْرٍو قَالَا ثنا أَبُو الْعَبَّاسِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ ثنا هَارُونُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ ثنا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ مَهْدِيٍّ عَنْ سُفْيَانَ عَنْ مَنْصُورٍ عَنْ أَبِي وَائِلٍ قَالَ

جَاءَنَا كِتَابُ عُمَرُ وَنَحْنُ بِخَانِقِينَ إِنَّ الْأَهِلَّةَ بَعْضُهَا أَكْبَرُ مِنْ بَعْضٍ فَإِذَا رَأَيْتُمُ الْهِلَالَ نَهَارًا فَلَا تُفْطِرُوا حَتَّى تُمْسُوا إِلَّا أَنْ يَشْهَدَ رَجُلَانِ مُسْلِمَانِ أَنَّهُمَا أَهَلَّاهُ بِالْأَمْسِ عَشِيَّةً هَكَذَا  

رَوَاهُ جَمَاعَةٌ عَنْ سُفْيَانَ الثَّوْرِيِّ

كَتَبَ إِلَيْنَا عُمَرُ ؓ وَنَحْنُ بِخَانِقِينَ إِنَّ الْأَهِلَّةَ بَعْضُهَا أَعْظَمُ مِنْ بَعْضٍ فَإِذَا رَأَيْتُمُ الْهِلَالَ أَوْلَ النَّهَارِ فَلَا تُفْطِرُوا حَتَّى يَشْهَدَ شَاهِدَانِ ذَوَا عَدْلٍ أَنَّهُمَا رَأَيَاهُ بِالْأَمْسِ هَذَا أَثَرٌ صَحِيحٌ عَنْ عُمَرَ ؓ

"عَنْ أبى وائِلٍ قال: أَتَانَا كِتَابُ عُمَرَ أَنَّ الأَهِلَّةَ بَعْضُهَا أَكْبَرُ مِنْ بَعْضٍ، فَإِذَا رَأَيْتُمُ الْهِلَالَ نَهَارًا فَلاَ تُفْطِرُوا حَتَّى يَشْهَدَ رَجُلَانِ مُسْلِمَانِ أَنَّهُمَا أَهَلَّاهُ بِالأَمْسِ".
