[Machine] He heard Abu Hurairah saying, "Some people used to read with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in a prayer where they would recite aloud. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ finished, he turned to them and said, 'Did anyone read with me?' They replied, 'Yes, Messenger of Allah.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'I thought to myself, why should I compete with the Quran?' Az-Zuhri said that the Muslims were admonished by this, and they stopped reciting aloud. Al-Awza'i preserved this statement as coming from Az-Zuhri, but he separated it from the hadith, except that he did not preserve its authenticity."

malik:3-46Yaḥyá > Mālik > Ibn Shihāb > Ibn Ukaymah al-Laythī > Abū Hurayrah

Yahya related to me from Malik from Ibn Shihab from Ibn Ukayma al-Laythi from Abu Hurayra that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ finished a prayer in which he had recited aloud and asked, "Did any of you recite with me just now?" One man said, "Yes, I did, Messenger of Allah." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "I was saying to myself, 'Why am I distracted from the Qur'an?' " When the people heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say that, they refrained from reciting with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when he recited aloud.
