Ibn Salamah bin Al Akwa’ repoted on the authority of his father. A spy of the polytheists came to the Prophet ﷺ when he was on a journey. He sat near his Companions and then slipped away. The Prophet ﷺ said “look for him and kill him”. He said “I raced to him and killed him. I took his belongings which he (the Prophet) gave me. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2653)   

البيهقي:١٨٤٣٦ – أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو الْقَاسِمِ عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ يَعْقُوبَ الْإِيَادِيُّ بِبَغْدَادَ أنبأ أَبُو بَكْرٍ الشَّافِعِيُّ ثنا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ الْحَرْبِيُّ ثنا أَبُو نُعَيْمٍ ثنا أَبُو عُمَيْسٍ عَنِ ابْنِ سَلَمَةَ بْنِ الْأَكْوَعِ عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ

أَتَى رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ عَيْنٌ مِنَ الْمُشْرِكِينَ وَهُوَ فِي سَفَرٍ قَالَ فَجَلَسَ فَتَحَدَّثَ عِنْدَ أَصْحَابِهِ ثُمَّ انْسَلَّ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ اطْلُبُوهُ فَاقْتُلُوهُ قَالَ فَسَبَقْتُهُمْ إِلَيْهِ فَقَتَلْتُهُ وَأَخَذْتُ سَلَبَهُ  

رَوَاهُ الْبُخَارِيُّ فِي الصَّحِيحِ عَنْ أَبِي نُعَيْمٍ

"An infidel spy came to the Prophet ﷺ while he was on a journey. The spy sat with the companions of the Prophet ﷺ and started talking and then went away. The Prophet ﷺ said (to his companions), 'Chase and kill him.' So, I killed him." The Prophet ﷺ then gave him the belongings of the killed spy (in addition to his share of the war booty).
