[Machine] Some of the Muslims used to be with the polytheists and increase the harm against the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ . They would throw arrows and hit one of them, killing him or causing him injury. So Allah, exalted be He, revealed this verse about them: "Indeed, those whom the angels take [in death] while wronging themselves, [the angels] will say, 'In what [condition] were you?' They will say, 'We were oppressed in the land.' The angels will say, 'Was not the earth of Allah spacious [enough] for you to emigrate therein?' For those, their refuge is Hell - and evil it is as a destination." [Quran 4:97]

quran:4:97

Indeed, those whom the angels take ˹in death˺ while wronging themselves - ˹the angels˺ will say, "In what ˹condition˺ were you?" They will say, "We were oppressed in the land." The angels will say, "Was not the earth of Allah spacious ˹enough˺ for you to emigrate therein?" For those, their refuge is Hell - and evil it is as a destination.

The following was revealed regarding a group of people who submitted to Islam but did not emigrate and were then slain in the battle of Badr alongside the disbelievers: And those whom the angels take ˹in death˺, while they are wronging their souls, having remained among the disbelievers and neglected to emigrate, the angels will say, to them in rebuke: ‘What was your predicament?’, in other words, ‘in what circumstances were you with regard to your religion’. They will say, giving excuses, ‘We were oppressed, unable to establish religion, in the land’, the land of Mecca. The angels will say, to them in rebuke: ‘But was not God’s earth spacious that you might have emigrated therein?’, from the land of unbelief to another land, as others did? God, exalted be He, says: as for such, their abode shall be Hell — an evil journey’s end, it is!

The people of Medina were forced to prepare an army (to fight against the people of Sham during the caliphate of ʿAbdullah bin Az-Zubair at Mecca), and I was enlisted in it; Then I met ʿIkrima, the freed slave of Ibn ʿAbbas, and informed him (about it), and he forbade me strongly to do so (i.e. to enlist in that army), and then said, "Ibn ʿAbbas informed me that some Muslim people were with the pagans, increasing the number of the pagans against Messenger of Allah ﷺ. An arrow used to be shot which would hit one of them (the Muslims in the company of the pagans) and kill him, or he would be struck and killed (with a sword)." Then Allah revealed:-- "Verily! as for those whom the angels take (in death) while they are wronging themselves (by staying among the disbelievers)" (4.97) Abu AlAswad also narrated it.

[Machine] "Those whom the angels take [in death] while wronging themselves, the angels will say, 'In what [condition] were you?' They will say, 'We were oppressed in the land.' The angels will say, 'Was not the earth of Allah spacious [enough] for you to emigrate therein?' For those, their refuge is Hell - and evil it is as a destination.' They will say, 'They were weak and oppressed in the land.' They will say, 'They were a company from among the believers who had gone out [to battle] defiantly with those who disbelieved, and they were killed in battle.' So Allah caused this verse to be revealed, 'Except for the oppressed among men, women, and children who cannot devise a plan nor are they directed to a way.' For those it is expected that Allah will pardon them.' So Allah pardoned them. And Allah is accepting of repentance and merciful.' Ibn Abbas said, 'It was I and my mother who had an excuse among them.'"
