bayhaqi:12267 – Abū ʿAbdullāh al-Ḥāfiẓ And ʾAbū Saʿīd b. Abū ʿAmr > Abū ʿAbdullāh Muḥammad b. Yaʿqūb > Muḥammad b. Naṣr > Abū Bakr b. Khallād > Sufyān b. ʿUyaynah > Ibn al-Munkadir > Jābir b. ʿAbdullāh

[Machine] I fell ill, so the Prophet ﷺ visited me to see how I was doing. I asked him, "O Messenger of Allah, what should I do with my wealth? How should I distribute it?" He did not answer me until the verse of inheritance was revealed, "They request from you a [legal] verdict. Say, 'Allah gives you a ruling concerning one having neither descendants nor ascendants as heirs.'" [Quran 4:176]  

البيهقي:١٢٢٦٧ – أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ وَأَبُو سَعِيدِ بْنُ أَبِي عَمْرٍو قَالَا ثنا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ نَصْرٍ ثنا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ خَلَّادٍ ثنا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ عَنِ ابْنِ الْمُنْكَدِرِ عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ قَالَ

مَرِضْتُ فَأَتَانِي النَّبِيُّ ﷺ يَعُودُنِي فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ كَيْفَ أَقْضِي فِي مَالِي؟ كَيْفَ أَصْنَعُ فِي مَالِي؟ فَلَمْ يُحَدِّثْنِي بِشَيْءٍ حَتَّى نَزَلَتْ آيَةُ الْمِيرَاثِ {يَسْتَفْتُونَكَ قُلِ اللهُ يُفْتِيكُمْ فِي الْكَلَالَةِ} [النساء 176]  

رَوَاهُ الْبُخَارِيُّ فِي الصَّحِيحِ عَنْ قُتَيْبَةَ وَرَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ عَنْ عَمْرٍو النَّاقِدِ كِلَاهُمَا عَنْ سُفْيَانَ

I became sick so Messenger of Allah ﷺ and Abu Bakr came on foot to pay me a visit. When they came, I was unconscious. Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed ablution and he poured over me the water (of his ablution) and I came to my senses and said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! What shall I do regarding my property? How shall I distribute it?" The Prophet ﷺ did not reply till the Divine Verses of inheritance were revealed . (Using translation from Bukhārī 6723)   

الكبرى للنسائي:٦٢٨٨ – أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مَنْصُورٍ الْمَكِّيُّ عَنْ سُفْيَانَ يَعْنِي ابْنَ عُيَيْنَةَ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ ابْنَ الْمُنْكَدِرِ يَقُولُ

سَمِعْتُ جَابِرًا يَقُولُ مَرِضْتُ فَأَتَانِي رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَأَبُو بَكْرٍ يَعُودَانِي وَهُمَا يَمْشِيَانِ فَوَجَدَانِي قَدْ أُغْمِيَ عَلَيَّ فَتَوَضَّأَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَصَبَّ وَضُوءَهُ عَلَيَّ فَأَفَقْتُ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ كَيْفَ أَقْضِي فِي مَالِي؟ كَيْفَ أَصْنَعُ فِي مَالِي؟ فَلَمْ يُجِبْنِي بِشَيْءٍ حَتَّى أُنْزِلَتْ آيَةُ الْمِيرَاثِ {يَسْتَفْتُونَكَ قُلِ اللهُ يُفْتِيكُمْ فِي الْكَلَالَةِ} [النساء 176] قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ خَالَفَهُ ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ

Once I fell ill. The Prophet ﷺ and Abu Bakr came walking to pay me a visit and found me unconscious. The Prophet ﷺ performed ablution and then poured the remaining water on me, and I came to my senses to see the Prophet. I said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! What shall I do with my property? How shall I dispose of (distribute) my property?" He did not reply till the Verse of inheritance was revealed. (Using translation from Bukhārī 5651)
