[AI] I visited Abdullah ibn Amr while he was in his garden in Ta'if, called Al-Wahat, and he was talking to a young man from Quraysh who was rumored to drink wine. I said to him, "I have heard a hadith that whoever drinks a sip of wine will not have his repentance accepted by God for forty days, and that the miserable is the one who is miserable in his mother's womb, and that whoever goes to the House of Al-Maqdis (Jerusalem) for nothing but prayer will have his sins erased as if he were reborn." When the young man heard the mention of wine, he withdrew his hand from Abdulah's hand and left. Abdullah ibn Amr then said, "I do not allow anyone to attribute to me something I did not say. I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say, 'Whoever drinks a sip of wine, his prayer will not be accepted for forty days, but if he repents, God will accept his repentance. If he returns to it, his prayer will not be accepted for forty days, but if he repents, God will forgive him again. If he returns for the third or fourth time, I do not know for sure, it will be a right upon God to make him drink from the pond of 'Khabal' on the Day of Resurrection.' I also heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say, 'God created His creation in darkness, then cast His light upon them on that day. Whoever was touched by His light was guided, and whoever it missed was misguided. That is why I say the pen has dried according to the knowledge of God.' I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say, 'Solomon the son of David, ﷺ , asked God for three things, and He granted him two, and we hope that the third one was granted for him as well. He asked for a judgment that coincides with God’s judgment, and God granted it to him. He asked for a kingdom that no one after him would deserve, and God granted it to him. And he asked that whoever leaves his house intending only to pray in this mosque would have his sins erased as if he was reborn, and we hope that God has granted him that as well.'"

The Prophet ﷺ appointed ʿAbdullah bin Jubair as the commander of the infantry men (archers) who were fifty on the day (of the battle) of Uhud. He instructed them, "Stick to your place, and don't leave it even if you see birds snatching us, till I send for you; and if you see that we have defeated the infidels and made them flee, even then you should not leave your place till I send for you." Then the infidels were defeated. By Allah, I saw the women fleeing lifting up their clothes revealing their leg-bangles and their legs. So, the companions of ʿAbdullah bin Jubair said, "The booty! O people, the booty ! Your companions have become victorious, what are you waiting for now?" ʿAbdullah bin Jubair said, "Have you forgotten what Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to you?" They replied, "By Allah! We will go to the people (i.e. the enemy) and collect our share from the war booty." But when they went to them, they were forced to turn back defeated. At that time Messenger of Allah ﷺ in their rear was calling them back. Only twelve men remained with the Prophet ﷺ and the infidels martyred seventy men from us. On the day (of the battle) of Badr, the Prophet ﷺ and his companions had caused the 'Pagans to lose 140 men, seventy of whom were captured and seventy were killed. Then Abu Sufyan asked thrice, "Is Muhammad present amongst these people?" The Prophet ﷺ ordered his companions not to answer him. Then he asked thrice, "Is the son of Abu Quhafa present amongst these people?" He asked again thrice, "Is the son of Al-Khattab present amongst these people?" He then returned to his companions and said, "As for these (men), they have been killed." ʿUmar could not control himself and said (to Abu Sufyan), "You told a lie, by Allah! O enemy of Allah! All those you have mentioned are alive, and the thing which will make you unhappy is still there." Abu Sufyan said, "Our victory today is a counterbalance to yours in the battle of Badr, and in war (the victory) is always undecided and is shared in turns by the belligerents, and you will find some of your (killed) men mutilated, but I did not urge my men to do so, yet I do not feel sorry for their deed" After that he started reciting cheerfully, "O Hubal, be high! (1) On that the Prophet ﷺ said (to his companions), "Why don't you answer him back?" They said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ What shall we say?" He said, "Say, Allah is Higher and more Sublime." (Then) Abu Sufyan said, "We have the (idol) Al ʿUzza, and you have no ʿUzza." The Prophet said (to his companions), "Why don't you answer him back?" They asked, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! What shall we say?" He said, "Says Allah is our Helper and you have no helper."

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Every intoxicant is khamr (wine) and every intoxicant is forbidden. If anyone drinks wine, Allah will not accept prayer from him for forty days, but if he repents, Allah will accept his repentance. If he repeats it a fourth time, it is binding on Allah that He will give him tinat al-khabal to drink. He was asked: What is tinat al-khabal, Messenger of Allah? He replied: Discharge of wounds, flowing from the inhabitants of Hell. If anyone serves it to a minor who does not distinguish between the lawful and the unlawful, it is binding on Allah that He will give him to drink the discharge of wounds, flowing from the inhabitants of Hell.

That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Whoever drinks Khamr, Salat is not accepted from him for forty days. If he repents, then Allah will accept his repentance. It he returns to it, then Allah will not accept his Salat for forty days. If he repents, then Allah will accept his repentance. If he returns to it, then Allah will not accepts his Salat for forty days. If he repents, then Allah will accept his repentance. If he returns to it a fourth time, Allah will not accept his Salat for forty days, and if he were to repent, Allah would not accept his repentance, and he will be given to drink from the river of Al-Khabal." They said: "O Aby 'Abdur-Rahman! What is the river of Al-Khabal?" He said: "A river of the pus from the inhabitants of the Fire."

tirmidhi:2477Hannād > Yūnus b. Bukayr > ʿUmar b. Dhar > Mujāhid > Abū Hurayrah

"The people of As-Suffah were the guests of the people of Islam, they had nothing of people nor wealth to rely upon. And By Allah, the One Whom there is none worthy of worship besides Him – I would lay on the ground on my liver (side) due to hunger, And I would fasten a stone to my stomach out of hunger. One day I sat by the way that they (the Companions) use to come out through. Abu Bakr passed and so I asked him about an Ayah from Allah's Book, not asking him except that he might tell me to follow him (for something to eat). But he passed on without doing so. Then ʿUmar passed, so I asked him about an Ayah from Allah's Book, not asking him except that he might tell me to follow him. But he passed on without doing so. Then Abul-Qasim ﷺ passed, and he smiled when he saw me, and said: 'Abu Hurairah?' I said: 'I am here O Messenger of Allah!' He said: 'Come along.' He continued and I followed him, he entered his house, so I sought permission to enter, and he permitted me. He found a bowl of milk and said: 'Where did this milk come from?' It was said: 'It was a gift to us from so – and – so.' So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'O Abu Hurairah' I said: 'I am here O Messenger of Allah!' He said: 'Go to the people of As-Suffah to invite them.' - Now, they were the guests of the people of Islam, they had nothing of people nor wealth to rely upon. Whenever some charity was brought to him, he would send it to them without using any of it. And when a gift was given to him ﷺ, he would send for them to participate and share with him in it. I became upset about that, and I said (to myself): 'What good will this bowl be among the people of As-Suffah and I am the one bringing it to them?' Then he ordered me to circulate it among them (So I wondered) what of it would reach me from it, and I hoped that I would get from it what would satisfy me. But I would certainly not neglect to obey Allah and obey His Messenger, so I went to them and invited them. When they entered upon him they sat down. He said: 'Abu Hurairah, take the bowl and give it to them.' So I gave it to a man who drank his fill, then he gave it to another one, until it ended up with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and all of the people had drank their fill. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ took the bowl, put it on his hand, then raised his head. He smiled and said: 'Abu Hurairah, drink.' So I drank, then he said: 'Drink.' I kept drinking and he kept on saying, 'Drink.' Then I said: 'By the One Who sent you with the truth! I have no more space for it.' So he took the bowl and praised Allah, mentioned His Name and drank.'” (Sahih)

Additional detail on the Night of the Jinn

tirmidhi:2861Muḥammad b. Bashhār > Ibn Abū ʿAdī > Jaʿfar b. Maymūn > Abū Tamīmah al-Hujaymī > Abū ʿUthmān > Ibn Masʿūd

from Ibn Mas'ud who said: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed 'Isha, then he turned and took the hand of 'Abdullah bin Mas'ud until he went with him to the wide valley of Makkah. He sat him down, then he drew a line around him. Then he said: 'Do not go beyond your line, for indeed there shall come some men to you, but do not speak to them for they shall not speak to you.'" He said: "Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ went to where he wanted to go, and while I was sitting within the line, some men came to me that appeared as if they were from Az-Zut (A dark people, either from North Africa or India. See Tuhfat Al-Ahwadhi and An-Nihayah), both their hair and their bodies. I did not see nakedness nor covering. They ended up before me but they did not pass the line. Then they returned toward the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.

And when it was near the end of the night, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to me while I was sitting, and he said: "I have been awake watching all night' then he entered into the line with me and lay down on my thigh to sleep. And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would snore when he slept. So while I was sitting there, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was sleeping (with his head resting) on my thigh, there appeared some men wearing white garments, and Allah knows best just how handsome they were. They came towards me, and a group of them sat at the head of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and a group at his feet. Then they said to each other: 'We have not ever seen a slave (of Allah) who was given the likes of what this Prophet has been given. Indeed his eyes sleep but his heart remains awake. His parable is that of a chief who built a castle, then he placed a table-spread in it, and invited the people to eat from his food and drink. So whoever answers his invitation, he eats from his food and drinks from his drink. Whoever does not answer, he is punished - or he said - he is chastised.'

Then they alighted and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ awoke at that time, and said: 'I heard what they were saying. Do you know who they were?' I said: 'Allah and His Messenger know better.' He said: 'They were the angels. Do you know the meaning of the parable they stated?' I said: 'Allah and His Messenger know better.' He said: 'The meaning is that Ar-Rahman [Most Blessed and Most High] built Paradise, and He invited His Slaves to it. Whoever replies he shall enter Paradise, and whoever does not reply, he shall be punished or chastised.'"

[AI] Abu Isa said: This is a good, authentic, and rare hadith in this context. Abu Tamimah is Al-Hujaymi, and his name is Tarif bin Mujalid. Abu Uthman Al-Nahdi's name is Abd Al-Rahman bin Mull. Sulayman Al-Taymi narrated this hadith, and Mu'tamir, who is Sulayman bin Tarakhan, also narrated it, although he was not of Banu Taym; he merely lived among them, so he was associated with them. Ali said that Yahya bin Sa'id stated, "I have not seen anyone more fearful of Allah, the Exalted, than Sulayman Al-Taymi."

nasai:4991Muḥammad b. Qudāmah > Jarīr > Abū Farwah > Abū Zurʿah > Abū Hurayrah And ʾAbī Dhar

"The Messenger of Allah [SAW] would sit among his Companions and if a stranger came, he would not know which of them was he (the Prophet [SAW]) until he asked. So we suggested to the Messenger of Allah [SAW] that we should make a dais for him so that any stranger would know him if he came to him. So we built for him a bench made of clay on which he used to sit. (One day) we were sitting and the Messenger of Allah [SAW] was sitting in his spot, when a man came along who was the most handsome and good-smelling of all people, and it was as if no dirt had ever touched his garments. He came near the edge of the rug and greeted him, saying: 'Peace be upon you, O Muhammad!' He returned the greeting, and he said: 'Shall I come closer, O Muhammad?' He came a little closer, and he kept telling him to come closer, until he put his hands on the knees of the Messenger of Allah [SAW]. He said: 'O Muhammad, tell me, what is Islam?' He said: 'Islam means to worship Allah and not associate anything with Him; to establish Salah, to pay Zakah, to perform Hajj to the House, and to fast Ramadan.' He said: 'If I do that, will I have submitted (be a Muslim)?' He said: 'Yes.' He said: 'You have spoken the truth,' we found it odd. He said: 'O Muhammad, tell me, what is faith?' He said: 'To believe in Allah [SWT], His Angels, the Book, the Prophets, and to believe in the Divine Decree.' He said: 'If I do that, will I have believed?' The Messenger of Allah [SAW] said: 'Yes.' He said: 'You have spoken the truth.' He said: 'O Muhammad, tell me, what is Al-Ihsan?' He said: 'To worship Allah [SWT] as if you can see Him, for although you cannot see Him, He can see you.' He said: 'You have spoken the truth.' He said: 'O Muhammad, tell me about the Hour.' He lowered his head and did not answer. Then he repeated the question, and he did not answer. Then he repeated the question (a third time) and he did not answer. Then he raised his head and said: 'The one who is being asked does not know more than the one who is asking. But it has signs, by which it may be known. When you see the herdsmen competing in building tall buildings, when you see the barefoot and naked ruling the Earth, when you see a woman giving birth to her mistress. Five things which no one knows except Allah [SWT]. Verily, Allah, with Him (alone) is the knowledge of the Hour up to His saying: 'Verily, Allah is All-Knower, All-Aware (of things).' Then he said: 'No, by the One who sent Muhammad with the truth, with guidance and glad tidings, I did not know him more than any man among you. That was Jibril, peace be upon you, who came down in the form of Dihyah Al-Kalbi.'"

Whoever drinks an intoxicant and does not get intoxicated, his Salah will not be accepted so long as any trace of it remains in his belly or his veins, and if he dies he will die as a disbeliever. If he becomes intoxicated his Salah will not be accepted for forty nights, and if he dies during them, he will die as a disbeliever.

I entered upon ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ while he was in an orchard of his in Ṭāʾif called al-Wahṭ, and he was restraining a young man from Quraysh who was suspected of drinking wine. He said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, “Whoever drinks wine once, his repentance will not be accepted for forty mornings; if he repents, Allah will accept his repentance. If he returns (to it), his repentance will not be accepted for forty mornings; if he repents, Allah will accept his repentance. If he returns again, it will be a due right upon Allah to make him drink from the mud of al-khabāl on the Day of Resurrection.” The wording is that of ʿAmr.

“Whoever drinks wine and gets drunk, his prayer will not be accepted for forty days, and if he dies he will enter Hell, but if he repents, Allah will accept his repentance. If he drinks wine again and gets drunk, his prayer will not be accepted for forty days, and if he dies he will enter Hell, but if he repents, Allah will accept his repentance. If he drinks wine again and gets drunk, his prayer will not be accepted for forty days, and if he dies he will enter Hell, but if he repents Allah will accept his repentance. But if he does it again, then Allah will most certainly make him drink of the mire of the puss or sweat on the Day of Resurrection.” They said: “O Messenger of Allah, what is the mire of the pus or sweat? He said: “The drippings of the people of Hell.”

[AI] The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) went out to the Bat-ha and took Ibn Mas'ood with him. He made him sit down and drew a line for him, then he said, "Do not move from here until men come to you, and do not speak to them, for they will not speak to you." So the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) went to where he wanted, and they halted at the line, not crossing it, and then they approached the Prophet (ﷺ) until, when it was the end of the night, they came to me while I was lying on my side. If the Prophet (ﷺ) was sleeping, he would blow lightly in his sleep. So while the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) lying on his side and I was lying with my leg under his thigh, some men came to me. They had the most beautiful white garments on. Allah knows best what beauty they possessed. Some of them sat by his head, and some sat by his feet. They said, "We have not seen a slave who has been given what this Prophet (ﷺ) has been given. His eyes sleep, but his heart is awake. Bring forth an example for him - a Lord who builds a palace, then makes a feast and invites the people to it, then the people leave and he rises." So the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) awoke, and said: "Do you know who these are?" I said: "Allah and His Messenger know best." He said: "These are the Angels." He said: "Do you know what example they gave?" I said: "Allah and His Messenger know best." He said: "The Most Merciful has built the Garden and has invited its people, and whoever answers the invitation enters His Garden, and whoever does not answer the invitation He will punish."

[AI] I entered the garden of Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-As in Ta'if, which was known as Al-Wahṭ. I found him alongside a young man from the Quraysh, who was suspected of drinking wine. I said, "There are some things reached to me about you that you report from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, that he said, 'Whoever drinks wine, none of his prayers will be accepted for forty mornings.'" When the young man heard him mention wine, he pulled his hand away from Abdullah's hand and turned away. Abdullah said, "O Allah, I do not permit anyone to say something I did not say. Indeed, I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'Whoever drinks wine, none of his prayers will be accepted for forty mornings. If he repents, Allah will accept his repentance. But I do not know whether it is on the third or fourth instance that it is incumbent upon Allah to make him drink from the mud of khabal on the Day of Resurrection.'"

ʿUmar bin al-Khattab ؓ sent for me, and whilst I was like that, his freed slave Yarfaʿ came and said: ‘Uthman, ʿAbdur-Rahman, Sa’d and az-Zubair bin al-ʿAwwam are here - (the narrator) said: I do not know whether he mentioned Talhah or not - and they are asking for permission to enter upon you. He said: Let them in. Then after a while, (Yarfaʿ) came and said: al-ʿAbbas and ‘Ali are asking permission to enter upon you. He said: Let them in. When alʿAbbas came in, he said: O Ameer al-Muʿmineen, judge between me and this one. They had a dispute at that time concerning the fai’ (booty) that Allah had granted to His Messenger of the wealth of Banun-Nadeer, The people said: Judge between them, O Ameer al-Muʿmineen, and relieve each one of his opponent, for their dispute has gone on too long. ‘Umar ؓ said: I adjure you by Allah, by Whose Leave heaven and earth exist, do you know that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “We are not to be inherited from; what we leave behind is charityʿ? They said: He did say that. He said: I shall tell you about that faiʿ; Allah, may He be glorified and exalted, gave something exclusively to His Prophet ﷺ that He did not give to anyone else. And he quoted the verse: ʿAnd what Allah gave as booty (Fai’) to His Messenger (Muhammad ﷺ) from them - for this you made no expedition with either cavalry or camelryʿ [al Hashr 59:6]. He said: ʿThis was exclusively for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and by Allah, he did not keep it to himself in exclusion of you and he did not prefer himself over you with regard to it. Rather he gave it to you and divided it among you until there was nothing left of it except this property. He spent on his familyʿs needs from this property for one year, then he took what was left and regarded it as the property of Allah. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed away, Abu Bakr said: ʿI am the successor of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, I shall deal with it as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ dealt with it. [AI] We sent the messenger of Allah ﷺ to the Negus, and we were about eighty men, including Abdullah bin Mas'ood, Ja'far, Abdullah bin Urfutah, Uthman bin Mazh'un, and Abu Musa. They went to the Negus, and Quraysh sent Amr bin al-As and Amarah bin al-Walid with a gift. When they entered upon the Negus, they prostrated to him and then sat on his right and left. They said to him, "Some of our relatives have settled in your land and turned away from us and our religion." He asked, "Where are they?" They replied, "They are in your land, so please send for them." He sent for them, and Ja'far said, "I am your speaker today, so follow me." He greeted the Negus and did not prostrate. They asked him, "Why don't you prostrate to the king?" He replied, "We only prostrate to Allah, the Almighty. He sent His Messenger ﷺ to us and commanded us to prostrate only to Him. He also commanded us to pray and pay zakah." Amr bin al-As said, "But they differ from you regarding Jesus, son of Mary." The Negus asked, "What do you say about Jesus, son of Mary and his mother?" They replied, "We say as Allah, the Almighty, says; Jesus is Allah's word and a spirit from Him. He cast it upon the chaste virgin and she became pregnant without a man touching her, and she did not give birth to a son." He then raised a stick from the ground and said, "O people of Abyssinia, priests, and monks, by Allah, they do not differ from what we say about Jesus. They welcome us and the one who has come with us. I bear witness that he is the Messenger of Allah. He is the one we find in the Injeel (Gospel) and the one whom Jesus, son of Mary, gave glad tidings about. Go wherever you like, for Allah, if it were not for the kingdom that I have, I would go to him, carry his slippers, wash his feet, and bring gifts to him." The Negus returned their gifts to them. Abdullah bin Mas'ood hurried until he reached Badr, claiming that the Prophet ﷺ sought his forgiveness when he heard about his death.

If he repeats it, Allah will accept his repentance. If he repeats it again, it is the right of Allah the Almighty to make him drink from the river of Khabeel." It was asked, "What is the river of Khabeel?" He ﷺ said, "It is the purulent discharge of the people of Hellfire."

If he drinks it again and becomes intoxicated, his prayer will not be accepted for another forty nights. And if he drinks it again and becomes intoxicated, his prayer will not be accepted for another forty nights. And on the third and fourth time, if he drinks it, his prayer will not be accepted for forty nights. If he repents, Allah will not accept his repentance, and it is a right upon Allah to make him drink from the fountain of impurity." It was asked, "What is the fountain of impurity?" He said, "The sweat of the people of Hell."

[AI] On the authority of 'Amir, Abu 'Amir, or Abu Malik, that the Prophet ﷺ was sitting in a gathering with his companions when Gabriel came to him in a different form, appearing as a man from the Muslims. Gabriel greeted him and the Prophet ﷺ returned the greeting. Then Gabriel placed his hand on the Prophet's knee and asked, "O Messenger of Allah, what is Islam?" The Prophet ﷺ replied, "It is to submit your face to Allah, to bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is His servant and messenger, to establish the prayer, give the obligatory charity (zakat)." Gabriel asked again, "So if I do this, have I become a Muslim?" The Prophet ﷺ replied, "Yes." Then Gabriel asked, "What is faith?" The Prophet ﷺ replied, "It is to believe in Allah, the Last Day, the angels, the Divine Books, the prophets, life after death, heaven, hell, and fate, both its good and bad." Gabriel asked again, "So if I do this, have I believed?" The Prophet ﷺ replied, "Yes." Then Gabriel asked, "What is excellence (ihsan), O Messenger of Allah?" The Prophet ﷺ replied, "It is to worship Allah as if you see Him, and if you do not see Him, then truly He sees you." Gabriel asked again, "So if I do this, have I excelled?" The Prophet ﷺ replied, "Yes." And we heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ return to him, but we could not see the one speaking to him, nor could we hear his words. The questioner asked, "O Messenger of Allah, when is the Hour?" The Prophet ﷺ replied, "Glory be to Allah, it has five signs which only Allah knows: Allah possesses knowledge of the Hour, He sends down rain, He knows what is in the wombs, no soul knows what it will earn tomorrow, and no soul knows in which land it will die. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted." (Surah Luqman, 34) The questioner then said, "O Messenger of Allah, if you wish, I can inform you of two signs that will precede it." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Inform me." The questioner said, "When you see a slave woman giving birth to her mistress, and when you see the barefooted, naked, impoverished shepherds competing in constructing tall buildings." The questioner asked, "And who are they, O Messenger of Allah?" The Prophet ﷺ said, "The Bedouins." Then he turned away, and when we did not see him on his way back, we said, "Glory be to Allah! This is Gabriel who came to teach the people their religion. The hand of Muhammad is in the hand of Gabriel, every time he came to him, I had not received any message except that I already knew it, except for this time."

[AI] Narrated by 'Amir or Abu 'Amir, Abu Malik, that the Prophet ﷺ was sitting in a gathering with his companions when Jibril came to him in a form other than his usual shape and saluted him. The Prophet ﷺ returned the greeting and then Jibril placed his hand on the Prophet's knee and said, "O Messenger of Allah, what is Islam?" He replied, "To testify that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah, and Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, to establish the prayer, to give the Zakat, to perform Hajj, and to fast in Ramadan." Jibril then asked him, "You have spoken the truth, so what is Iman (faith)?" He replied, "To believe in Allah, His angels, His books, His messengers, the Last Day, and to believe in predestination and that every good and bad is from Allah." Jibril asked again, "You have spoken the truth, so what is Ihsan (perfection)?" The Prophet ﷺ replied, "To worship Allah as if you see Him, and if you cannot achieve this state of devotion, then be aware that He sees you." Jibril continued to ask the Prophet ﷺ about the signs of the Day of Judgment until he asked, "When will the Hour be?" The Prophet ﷺ replied, "The one being asked does not know more than the one asking. But I will inform you of its signs. When you see barefoot, naked, destitute shepherds competing in the construction of tall buildings, that will be one of its signs. And when you see the hunched-backed, barefoot uncivilized Bedouins competing in building great structures, that will be one of its signs." Then he (Jibril) left. The Prophet ﷺ kept silent for a while and then said, "O Abu Huraira, did you mark or memorize everything?" I said, "O Messenger of Allah, even I cannot memorize all this." Then Allah's Messenger ﷺ passed his hand over my chest and I felt its coolness in my chest, and I knew all that he had said.

[AI] On the day of Uhud, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stationed fifty archers at a certain point and told them, "If you see that the birds are snatching us away, do not leave your positions until I send for you. And if you see us prevailing over the enemy and trampling them, do not leave until I send for you." Abdullah ibn Jubayr said, "Indeed, we saw the women tightening their belts and raising their clothes while standing on the mountains." The companions of Abdullah ibn Jubayr asked, "What about the spoils? O people of the spoils, your companions have prevailed, so why are you waiting?" Abdullah ibn Jubayr replied, "Have you forgotten what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ told you?" They said, "By Allah, we will not give up our shares of the spoils." When they reached the enemy, their faces turned back in defeat and they retreated. This was what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had warned them about. Only twelve men remained with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and they killed seventy captives and seventy enemies on the day of Badr. Abu Sufyan asked, "Is Muhammad among the people?" He repeated the question three times until the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stopped them from answering. Then he asked, "Is the son of Abu Quhafa among the people?" He repeated the question twice until Abu Bakr and Umar answered. Then he turned to his companions and said, "As for these, they have been killed and you have already avenged them. So, Umar has no right to say that you have told a lie. By the Lord of Allah, all those whom you counted are alive, and you still have what will harm you." He recited, "On the day of Badr, and war is a thing in which you will find great recklessness. And you will surely find there among them a great disturbance." Then he began to recite the verse, "O believers, respond to Allah and to the Messenger when he calls you to that which gives you life." They asked, "O Messenger of Allah, what should we say?" [AI] "We went out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and when we reached outside the city, we saw a rider approaching us. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'It seems that this rider wants to meet you.' The man came to us, greeted us, and we returned his greeting. The Prophet ﷺ asked him, 'Where are you coming from?' He replied, 'From my family, children, and tribe.' The Prophet ﷺ asked, 'Where are you going?' He said, 'I intend to meet the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.' The Prophet ﷺ said, 'You have indeed met him.' The man asked, 'O Messenger of Allah, teach me about faith.' The Prophet ﷺ said, 'Faith is to testify that there is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, to establish the prayer, pay the Zakat, fast during Ramadan, and perform Hajj.' The man said, 'I have accepted.' Then, his camel entered a net of rats, causing the camel and the man to fall and he died. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Hold me responsible for this man.' 'Ammaar ibn Yaasir and Hudhayfah helped place him in a sitting position. They said to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, 'He has already passed away.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ turned away from them and said, 'Didn't you see me turning away from him? I saw two angels pressing fruits of Paradise for him, so I knew that he died while hungry.' Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'By Allah, he is from those mentioned by Allah in the verse: 'Those who believed and did not mix their faith with injustice, for them is security, and they are rightly guided.' (Surah Al-Anaam, 6:82)' He added, 'Bury your brother. We carried him to water, washed him, shrouded him, and took him to his grave.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came and sat at the edge of the grave and said, 'Stay strong and do not tear your garments, for we will go through this grief and others will suffer it.'"

[AI] "Julaibib used to enter upon women and interact with them. So I said to my wife, 'Julaibib should not enter upon you, for if he were to enter upon you, I am afraid that he would do something.' The Ansar would not marry off their daughters until they found out if there was any need for the Prophet, ﷺ , in her. So the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , said to a man from the Ansar, 'Marry your daughter to me.' He said, 'Yes, O Messenger of Allah, this is certainly an honor.' The Prophet, ﷺ , said, 'I don't want her for myself, but I want her for Julaibib.' The man said, 'O Messenger of Allah, for Julaibib?' He said, 'Yes, for Julaibib.' So he consulted her mother, and when the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , came, he informed her of what her mother had said. She said, 'Julaibib, is it him?' She repeated this three times. 'Yes, by Allah, for I will not marry him.' So when he wanted to stand up to inform the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , of what she had said, the girl said, 'Who proposed to me to you?' Her mother informed her. She said, 'Are you rejecting the command of the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ ?' Push me, for he has not disappointed me.' So her father went to the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , and informed him. He said, 'What is your opinion about her?' Then he married her to Julaibib. The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , went on a campaign, and when Allah granted them victory, he asked his companions, 'Have you lost anyone?' They said, 'We have lost so-and-so, and we have lost so-and-so.' He said, 'Look, have you lost anyone?' They said, 'No.' He said, 'But I have lost Julaibib.' So seek him among the slain.' They searched for him until they found him beside seven men he had killed, and then they killed him.' They said, 'O Messenger of Allah, here he is, beside seven men he had killed, and then they killed him.' So the Prophet, ﷺ , stood over him and said, 'He has killed seven and then they killed him. This one is from me and I am from him. This one is from me and I am from him.' He raised his head and placed him on his side, and there was no bed except that of the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ . Then he placed him in his grave. It is not mentioned that he was bathed. Thabit said, 'Wealth that the Ansar had would be spent but they did not find anyone who narrated about it in this world except Hammad bin Salamah. How well he narrated it.'"

[AI] Al-Awza'i praised and the wording of this hadith is from Abu al-Abbas who said: Rabia bin Yazid and Yahya bin Abi 'Amr al-Saybani narrated to me, they said: 'Abdullah bin Firoz al-Daylami narrated to me, he said: I entered upon Abdullah bin 'Amr bin al-'As while he was in a wall in Taif called al-Wahat and he was lecturing a young man from the Quraysh. And this young man would indulge in drinking wine.

So I said to Abdullah bin 'Amr bin al-'As, "Tell me something about you that I can narrate from you about the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said, "Whoever drinks wine, his repentance will not be accepted for forty mornings." The young man clenched his hand with the hand of Abdullah, then he turned away. Abdullah said: "Indeed, a miserable person is the one who is miserable in his mother's womb. And whoever leaves his house intending only to pray in al-Masjid al-Haram, he will come out of his sin like the day his mother gave birth to him."

Abdullah bin 'Amr bin al-'As said: "O Allah! I will not permit anyone to attribute to me what I did not say. Indeed, I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: 'Whoever drinks wine, his repentance will not be accepted for forty mornings. But if he repents, Allah will accept his repentance. But if he returns to it, his repentance will not be accepted for forty mornings.' I do not remember if it was on the third or fourth time that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Then it is a right upon Allah to make him drink from the mud of the Kohl on the Day of Resurrection.'"

He said: "I also heard the Prophet ﷺ say: 'Indeed, Allah created His creation in darkness and then He cast upon them some of His light. So whoever receives some of that light on that day, then he has been guided. And whoever is misguided, then it is because of that.' So I say: The pen has dried upon the knowledge of Allah."

And I also heard the Prophet ﷺ say: 'Indeed, Sulaiman bin Dawud asked his Lord three times, so He gave him two and we hope that He gave him the third. He asked Him for a judgment that aligns with his judgment, so He gave it to him. And he asked Him for a kingdom that none after him should have, so He gave it to him. And he asked Him that whenever a man leaves his house and intends only to pray in this mosque, he should come out of his sin like the day his mother gave birth to him. We hope that Allah has given him that.' Al-Awza'i said: Rabia bin Yazid narrated this hadith to me between al-Miqsilat and al-Jasa'ir.

I have no more space for it.' So he took the bowl and praised Allah, mentioned His Name and drank.'” (Sahih) (Using translation from Tirmidhī 2477)

[AI] The sons of Saad ibn Bakr, Dimam ibn Tha'laba, were sent to the Messenger of Allah. They came to us and I tied their camel at the gate of the mosque. Then they entered upon the Messenger of Allah, who was sitting in the mosque with his companions. He asked them, "Which one of you is the son of Abdul-Muttalib?" The Messenger of Allah replied, "I am the son of Abdul-Muttalib." He said, "Muhammad?" The Messenger of Allah replied, "Yes." He said, "O Muhammad, I have a question for you, and I am persistent in it. Do not find me offensive. For I do not find it in myself." He said, "Ask about what you have in mind." He said, "I ask you by Allah, your God, the God of those before you, and the God of those who will come after you: Did Allah send you to us as a messenger?" The Messenger of Allah replied, "By Allah, yes." He said, "I ask you by Allah, your God, the God of those before you, and the God of those who will come after you: Did Allah command you that we worship Him alone and not associate anything with Him, and that we reject these idols and false gods that our forefathers used to worship?" The Messenger of Allah replied, "By Allah, yes." Then he began mentioning the obligations of Islam, one by one, starting with prayer, then zakah, fasting, and Hajj, reciting them after each obligation, just as he recited them before. When he finished, he said, "I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and that you are His servant and messenger. I will fulfill these obligations and avoid what you have prohibited me from doing. I will not increase or decrease in them." Then he turned around and returned to his camel. The Messenger of Allah said as he was leaving, "If the two idols are truthful, he will enter Paradise." Dimam was a tall, hairy man with prominent shoulders. He came with his camel and released its reins until he came to his people. They gathered around him and the first thing he said was cursing Lat and Uzza. They said, "What is wrong with you, O Dimam? Beware of leprosy, madness, and insanity!" He said, "Woe to you! By Allah, neither of them can harm or benefit. Allah has sent a messenger and revealed a book to you, which has saved you from what you were in. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and that Muhammad is His servant and messenger. I have come to you from him with what he has commanded you and what he has forbidden you. By Allah, not a single man or woman in the city today is not a Muslim." Ibn Abbas said, "We have not heard of a group coming that was better than Dimam ibn Tha'laba. Both the two sheikhs agreed to remove from their book the story of Dimam entering the city, and neither of them narrated the complete hadith. This is authentic." Authentic.

[AI] The messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever drinks wine and becomes intoxicated by it, his prayer will not be accepted for forty days. If he drinks it again until he becomes intoxicated, his prayer will not be accepted for forty days. If he drinks it a third time until he becomes intoxicated, his prayer will not be accepted for forty days. If he drinks it a fourth time and becomes intoxicated, then it is rightful for Allah to make him drink from the pus of Hell."

It was asked, "What is the pus of Hell?" He ﷺ said, "It is the discharge of the people of Hell."

[AI] Abu Bakr al-Siddiq, Umar ibn Al-Khattab, and some of the companions of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, sat together after the death of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him. They discussed the greatest sins, but they did not have knowledge about them. So, they sent me to Abdullah ibn Amr to ask him about it. He informed me that the greatest of sins is drinking alcohol. I went back to them and informed them, but they denied it and disputed with me until they went to Abdullah ibn Amr's house. I informed him about their denial, and he told them that the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said, "There was a man from the Children of Israel who was given the choice to either drink alcohol, kill someone, commit adultery, eat pork, or be killed. If he refused, they would kill him. So, he chose to drink alcohol. After he drank it, he did not refrain from anything they wanted from him." The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, also said to us, "Anyone who drinks alcohol, Allah will not accept his prayer for forty nights, and if he dies within forty nights, he will die the way a pre-Islamic pagan dies."

What shall we say?" He said, "Says Allah is our Helper and you have no helper." (Using translation from Bukhārī 3039)

[AI] They said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ and Abu Bakr and Umar and the caliphs used to enforce it." He said, "What do you say, Abu Qilabah?" He said, "With you are the leaders of the armies and the nobles of the Arabs." A man from the people of Homs testified against a man from the people of Damascus that he had stolen and they did not witness him, would you cut him?" He said, "No." He said, "Four men from the people of Damascus testified against a man from the people of Homs that he committed adultery and they did not witness him, would you stone him?" He said, "No." He said, "So this is similar. By Allah, we never knew the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to kill anyone except that he would kill a man in return. Anbasa bin Sa'id said, "So where is the Hadith of the Qur'anists?" Abu Qilabah said, "I heard Anas bin Malik narrating from Anas bin Malik that a people from 'Ukl or 'Urainah came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and settled in the city. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded them to drink the milk and urine of their camels. So they set out, but when they recovered, they killed the shepherd of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and stole the camels. The news of their actions reached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ from early in the morning. So he sent men after them and it was not long before they were brought to him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered that their hands and feet be cut off and that their eyes be branded and they were thrown in the sun. They remained thirsty until they died. These are people who killed, stole, and disbelieved after their belief." Anbasa said, "How perfect is Allah!" Abu Qilabah said, "Are you accusing me, O Anbasa?" He said, "No, but this army will continue to be in good as long as Allah keeps you among them."

[AI] Abdullah ibn Hawala said: We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and we complained to him about poverty and scarcity. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Be glad, for by Allah, it is not the abundance of wealth that I fear for you, but rather the scarcity of it. And by Allah, this matter (Islam) will continue to spread among you until Allah opens the lands of Persia, Rome, and Yemen for you, and you will be armies, three armies in Syria, one army in Iraq, and one army in Yemen. And until a man will be given a hundred Dirhams and will be displeased with it." Ibn Hawala said: I said, "O Messenger of Allah, who can conquer Syria and Rome, the domains of empires?" He said, "By Allah, it will be opened for you by Allah, and He will make you its successors, until even the white thread of these people is taken by the black thread of yours in matters that they command, and you fulfill it. And indeed, in it there are men who, in their sight, you are more worthless than monkeys in the sight of camels." Ibn Hawala said: So I said, "O Messenger of Allah, choose for me if I live to see that." He said, "I choose for you Syria, for it is the elite of Allah's land. To it, the elite of His servants will be selected. O people of Yemen, rely on Syria, for surely Allah has taken charge of Syria and its people." Abu 'Alqama said: I heard 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Jubayr say: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ mentioned this hadith about Hurayb ibn Suhayl al-Sulami, who was among the non-Arab people at that time. So when they used to go to the mosque, they would look at him and stand around him. They marveled at the description of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about him and about them. Abu 'Alqama said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ took an oath three times in this hadith, and we do not know of any other hadith in which he took an oath like this. And in this book, there is a narration from Ibn Zughb al-Iyadi from 'Abdullah ibn Hawala from the Prophet ﷺ that Syria will be opened for you, and then you will divide the treasures of Persia and Rome.

[AI] Ibn Shihab said, "This is a hadith of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when he went to the Banu Nadir seeking their assistance against the Banu Qurayza. The Banu Nadir had claimed that they had conveyed secretly to the Quraysh when they camped at the Battle of Uhud to fight the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. They incited the Quraysh to fight and directed them towards the rear. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ addressed them regarding the issue with the Banu Qurayza, they said, 'Sit, Abu al-Qasim, until you are fed and your need is fulfilled, and then we will consult and rectify our situation regarding the matter for which you have come to us.' So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sat down, and those who followed him sat as well, leaning against a wall, waiting for their matter to be rectified. When they all sat, and Shaytan was with them and did not leave them, they conspired to kill the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. They said, 'You will not find a better opportunity than now to kill him, so be at ease, be safe in your homes, and calamity will be lifted from you.' A man said, 'If you wish, I can go up to the roof and throw a stone at him and kill him.' Allah inspired him and informed him of their plot. So Allah protected him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood up as if he wanted to fulfill a need and left his companions sitting, and he waited for the enemies of Allah. Then a man from the people of Madinah came and they asked him about the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said, 'I met him, and he entered the alleys of Madinah.' They said to his companions, 'Quickly, Abu al-Qasim needs us to go and support him in his need.' So the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ got up and returned. The Quran descended, and Allah knows best what the enemies of Allah did. He said, 'O you who have believed, remember the favor of Allah upon you when a people determined to extend their hands [in aggression] against you, but He withheld their hands from you. And fear Allah. And upon Allah let the believers rely.'" And this is the end of the narration.

[AI] "Allah's Messenger ﷺ forbade the polytheistic Quraish from the agreement that He made with them on the day of Hudaybiyah, wherein Allah revealed what He decided between them. Urwah bin Zubair informed me that he heard Marwan bin Al-Hakam and Miswar bin Makhrama narrating about the Companions of Allah's Messenger ﷺ. They said that when the Messenger ﷺ appointed Suhail bin Amr to act as a scribe, Suhail bin Amr stipulated a condition to the Messenger ﷺ that none of us should come to you, even if they were upon your religion, except that you send them back to us. So the believers disliked this and they protested against it or used other words. Imam Ahmad, may Allah have mercy on him, said that our sheikh did not mention this statement and its narration is in a different version. They persisted, and so the Messenger ﷺ wrote to Abu Jandal that day and returned him to his father, Suhail bin Amr, and no one else among the men was returned during that time, even if they were Muslims. The believing women came and Umm Kulthum, the daughter of Uqbah bin Abu Mu'ayt, who had come out to the Messenger ﷺ that day while she was in bondage, (her family) came to ask the Messenger ﷺ to return her to them, but he did not return her to them due to what Allah revealed about them (the believing women) in the Qur'an: 'When believing women come to you, giving you a pledge (concerning their behavior and conduct under Islam), that they will not associate anything with Allah, nor steal, nor commit unlawful sexual intercourse, nor kill their children' (Al-Mumtahinah 10). Urwah said that 'Aishah informed me that Allah's Messenger ﷺ used to test them (the believing women) through this Ayah: 'O Prophet, when believing women come to you giving you a pledge…' (Al-Mumtahinah 12). Urwah said that 'Aishah said: whoever accepted this condition among them, the Messenger ﷺ would say to her, 'I have pledged allegiance to you with a word that I speak to you with, and by Allah, never has the hand of a woman been shaken in allegiance by mine.' He would only accept their pledge of allegiance by verbal agreement."
