When he called a person by their nickname, we would say, "O Messenger of Allah, this nickname bothers this person." [Machine] In Bani Salimah, the verse "Do not insult one another by using offensive nicknames" [Al-Hujurat 11] was revealed. It is said that when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ arrived in Medina, every man among them had two or three names. So, whenever he called someone by one of those names, they would say, "O Messenger of Allah, he dislikes being called by this name." He ﷺ said, "The verse 'Do not insult one another by using offensive nicknames' was then revealed."
