I was riding on a mount behind the prophet (May peace be upon him). It stumbled. Thereupon I said: May the devil perish! He said: do not say; may the devil perish! For you say that, he will swell so much so that he will be like a house, and say: by my power. But say: in the name of Allah; for when you say that, he will diminish so much so that he will be like a fly.

كُنْتُ رَدِيفَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَعَثَرَتْ دَابَّتُهُ فَقُلْتُ تَعِسَ الشَّيْطَانُ فَقَالَ لاَ تَقُلْ تَعِسَ الشَّيْطَانُ فَإِنَّكَ إِذَا قُلْتَ ذَلِكَ تَعَاظَمَ حَتَّى يَكُونَ مِثْلَ الْبَيْتِ وَيَقُولَ بِقُوَّتِي وَلَكِنْ قُلْ بِسْمِ اللَّهِ فَإِنَّكَ إِذَا قُلْتَ ذَلِكَ تَصَاغَرَ حَتَّى يَكُونَ مِثْلَ الذُّبَابِ

[AI] From Abu Tamimah Al-Hujaymi, who was a companion of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ , he said: I was walking alongside the Prophet ﷺ on a donkey when the donkey stumbled. I exclaimed, "May Satan be cursed!" The Prophet ﷺ said to me, "Do not curse Satan when you stumble, for if you do, Satan will become more arrogant. Instead, say 'Bismillah' (in the name of Allah), and Satan will shrink until he becomes smaller than a fly."

عَنْ أَبِي تَمِيمَةَ الْهُجَيْمِيِّ عَمَّنْ كَانَ رَدِيفَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ كُنْتُ رَدِيفَهُ عَلَى حِمَارٍ فَعَثَرَ الْحِمَارُ فَقُلْتُ تَعِسَ الشَّيْطَانُ فَقَالَ لِي النَّبِيُّ ﷺ لَا تَقُلْ تَعِسَ الشَّيْطَانُ فَإِنَّكَ إِذَا قُلْتَ تَعِسَ الشَّيْطَانُ تَعَاظَمَ الشَّيْطَانُ فِي نَفْسِهِ وَقَالَ صَرَعْتُهُ بِقُوَّتِي فَإِذَا قُلْتَ بِسْمِ اللهِ تَصَاغَرَتْ إِلَيْهِ نَفْسُهُ حَتَّى يَكُونَ أَصْغَرَ مِنْ ذُبَابٍ

[AI] From the companion of the Prophet ﷺ or from a man from the companion of the Prophet ﷺ , that he was riding on a donkey and stumbled. So he said (to the donkey), "May the devil be cursed!" (The Prophet) said, "Do not say, 'May the devil be cursed,' for if you say, 'May the devil be cursed,' he becomes greater. Instead, say, 'In the name of Allah,' and he will be minimized until he becomes like a fly."

عَنْ رِديفِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ أَوْ عَنْ رَجُلٍ عَنْ رِدْفِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ أَنَّهُ كَانَ عَلَى حِمَارٍ فَعَثَرَ فَقَالَ الَّذِي خَلْفَهُ تَعِسَ الشَّيْطَانُ فَقَالَ لَا تَقُلْ تَعِسَ الشَّيْطَانُ فَإِنَّكَ إِذَا قُلْتَ تَعِسَ الشَّيْطَانُ تَعَاظَمَ وَقَالَ بِعِزَّتِي صَرَعْتُكَ وَإِذَا قُلْتَ بِسْمِ اللهِ تَصَاغَرَ حَتَّى يَصِيرَ مِثْلَ ذُبَابٍ

[AI] Narrated by the Prophet ﷺ or someone who heard it from the Prophet ﷺ that his mount stumbled and he said, "May the devil be cursed!" Then he said, "Don't say that, for he becomes proud when you say that, until he becomes as large as a mountain and says, 'By my strength, I caused him to stumble.' But if you say 'Bismillah' (in the name of Allah), he becomes small until he becomes as small as a fly."

عَنْ رِدْفِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ أَوْ مَنْ حَدَّثَهُ عَنْ رِدْفِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ أَنَّهُ كَانَ رِدْفَهُ فَعَثَرَتْ بِهِ دَابَّتُهُ فَقَالَ تَعِسَ الشَّيْطَانُ فَقَالَ لَا تَفْعَلْ فَإِنَّهُ يَتَعَاظَمُ إِذَا قُلْتَ ذَلِكَ حَتَّى يَصِيرَ مِثْلَ الْجَبَلِ وَيَقُولُ بِقُوَّتِي صَرَعْتُهُ وَإِذَا قُلْتَ بِسْمِ اللهِ تَصَاغَرَ حَتَّى يَكُونَ مِثْلَ الذُّبَابِ

[AI] From the rank of the messenger of Allah ﷺ , it became clear that his mount stumbled. So he said, "May Satan be cursed." The messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Do not say, 'May Satan be cursed,' for if you say, 'May Satan be cursed,' he becomes more arrogant. I seized him with my strength, and when the phrase 'In the name of Allah' is said, he becomes humiliated until he becomes like a fly."

عَنْ رَدِيفِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَنَّهُ عَثَرَتْ بِهِ دَابَّتُهُ فَقَالَ تَعِسَ الشَّيْطَانُ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ لَا تَقُلْ تَعِسَ الشَّيْطَانُ فَإِنَّكَ إِنْ قُلْتَ تَعِسَ الشَّيْطَانُ تَعَاظَمَ وَقَالَ بِقُوَّتِي صَرَعْتُهُ وَإِذَا قِيلَ بِسْمِ اللَّهِ خَنَسَ حَتَّى يَصِيرَ مِثْلَ الذُّبَابِ

[AI] "I was a companion of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , and our camel stumbled. I said, 'May the Shaytan be cursed.' The Prophet ﷺ said to me, 'Do not curse the Shaytan, for he becomes arrogant and powerful when you do so, until he becomes the size of a housefly. Instead, say Bismillah (in the name of Allah). When you say Bismillah, he diminishes in size until he becomes like a tiny fly.'"

كُنْتُ رَدِيفَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَعَثَرَ بَعِيرُنَا فَقُلْتُ تَعِسَ الشَّيْطَانُ فَقَالَ لِي النَّبِيُّ ﷺ لَا تَقُلْ تَعِسَ الشَّيْطَانُ فَإِنَّهُ يَسْتَعْظِمُ حَتَّى يَكُونَ مِثْلَ الْبَيْتِ وَيَقْوَى وَلَكِنْ قُلْ بِسْمِ اللَّهِ فَإِذَا قُلْتَ بِسْمِ اللَّهِ تَصَاغَرَ حَتَّى يَصِيرَ مِثْلَ الذُّبَابِ

[AI] I was accompanying the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when our camel stumbled, so I said, "May the devil be cursed!" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Do not say, 'May the devil be cursed,' for he becomes proud until he becomes as great as a house, and he says with pride, 'By my power.' Instead, say, 'In the name of Allah,' for he will become as small as a fly."

كُنْتُ رَدِيفَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَعَثَرَ بَعِيرُنَا فَقُلْتُ تَعِسَ الشَّيْطَانُ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ لَا تَقُلْ تَعِسَ الشَّيْطَانُ فَإِنَّهُ يَعْظُمُ حَتَّى يَصِيرَ مِثْلَ الْبَيْتِ وَيَقُولَ بِقُوَّتِي قُلْ بِسْمِ اللهِ فَإِنَّهُ يَصِيرُ مِثْلَ الذُّبَابِ

"لا تَقُلْ: تَعسَ الشَّيْطَانُ، فَإِنَّكَ إِذَا قُلتَ ذَلِكَ تَعَاظمَ؛ فَإنَّهُ يعظُمُ حَتَّى يَصِيرَ مِثْلَ البَيْتِ، وَيَقُول: بقوَّتِى صَرَعْتُهُ، وَلكِنْ قُلْ: بِسْم اللهِ، فَإِئكَ إِذَا قُلْتَ ذَلِكَ تَصَاغر حَتَّى يَصِيرَ مِثْلَ الذبابِ (فِيمَنْ عَثَرَ) ".
