While the Muslims were offering the Fajr prayer on Monday and Abu Bakr was leading them in prayer, suddenly Messenger of Allah ﷺ lifted the curtain of ʿAisha's dwelling and looked at them while they were in the rows of the prayers and smiled. Abu Bakr retreated to join the row, thinking that Allah's Apostle wanted to come out for the prayer. The Muslims were about to be put to trial in their prayer (i.e. were about to give up praying) because of being overjoyed at seeing Messenger of Allah ﷺ. But Allah's Apostle beckoned them with his hand to complete their prayer and then entered the dwelling and let fall the curtain.

أَنَّ الْمُسْلِمِينَ بَيْنَا هُمْ فِي صَلاَةِ الْفَجْرِ مِنْ يَوْمِ الاِثْنَيْنِ وَأَبُو بَكْرٍ يُصَلِّي لَهُمْ لَمْ يَفْجَأْهُمْ إِلاَّ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَدْ كَشَفَ سِتْرَ حُجْرَةِ عَائِشَةَ فَنَظَرَ إِلَيْهِمْ وَهُمْ فِي صُفُوفِ الصَّلاَةِ ثُمَّ تَبَسَّمَ يَضْحَكُ فَنَكَصَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ عَلَى عَقِبَيْهِ لِيَصِلَ الصَّفَّ وَظَنَّ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يُرِيدُ أَنْ يَخْرُجَ إِلَى الصَّلاَةِ فَقَالَ أَنَسٌ وَهَمَّ الْمُسْلِمُونَ أَنْ يَفْتَتِنُوا فِي صَلاَتِهِمْ فَرَحًا بِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَأَشَارَ إِلَيْهِمْ بِيَدِهِ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَنْ أَتِمُّوا صَلاَتَكُمْ ثُمَّ دَخَلَ الْحُجْرَةَ وَأَرْخَى السِّتْرَ

Anas bin Malik Al-Ansari, told me, "Abu Bakr used to lead the people in prayer during the fatal illness of the Prophet ﷺ till it was Monday. When the people aligned (in rows) for the prayer the Prophet ﷺ lifted the curtain of his house and started looking at us and was standing at that time. His face was (glittering) like a page of the Qur'an and he smiled cheerfully. We were about to be put to trial for the pleasure of seeing the Prophet, Abu Bakr retreated to join the row as he thought that the Prophet ﷺ would lead the prayer. The Prophet ﷺ beckoned us to complete the prayer and he let the curtain fall. On the same day he died."

أَنَّ أَبَا بَكْرٍ كَانَ يُصَلِّي لَهُمْ فِي وَجَعِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ الَّذِي تُوُفِّيَ فِيهِ حَتَّى إِذَا كَانَ يَوْمُ الاِثْنَيْنِ وَهُمْ صُفُوفٌ فِي الصَّلاَةِ فَكَشَفَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ سِتْرَ الْحُجْرَةِ يَنْظُرُ إِلَيْنَا وَهْوَ قَائِمٌ كَأَنَّ وَجْهَهُ وَرَقَةُ مُصْحَفٍ ثُمَّ تَبَسَّمَ يَضْحَكُ فَهَمَمْنَا أَنْ نَفْتَتِنَ مِنَ الْفَرَحِ بِرُؤْيَةِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَنَكَصَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ عَلَى عَقِبَيْهِ لِيَصِلَ الصَّفَّ وَظَنَّ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ خَارِجٌ إِلَى الصَّلاَةِ فَأَشَارَ إِلَيْنَا النَّبِيُّ ﷺ أَنْ أَتِمُّوا صَلاَتَكُمْ وَأَرْخَى السِّتْرَ فَتُوُفِّيَ مِنْ يَوْمِهِ

Abu Bakr was leading them in prayer during the illness of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in which he passed away. On the Monday when they were lined up for prayer, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ pulled aside the curtain of the room and looked at us while standing, his face appearing like a page from the Quran. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ smiled, laughing. We were astonished while we were in the prayer due to our joy at the appearance of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . Abu Bakr retreated to join the row, thinking that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would come out to lead the prayer. But the Messenger of Allah ﷺ signaled to them with his hand to complete their prayer. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ went back and let the curtain fall. On that day, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed away.

فَأَمَرَ أَبَا بَكْرٍ فَصَلَّى بِالنَّاسِ فَكَشَفَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ سِتْرَ حُجْرَةِ عَائِشَةَ وَالنَّاسُ يَنْظُرُونَ فَنَظَرْتُ إِلَى وَجْهِهِ كَأَنَّهُ وَرَقَةُ مُصْحَفٍ حَتَّى نَكَصَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ عَلَى عَقِبَيْهِ وَظَنَّ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُرِيدُ أَنْ يُصَلِّيَ بِالنَّاسِ فَأَشَارَ إِلَيْهِمْ أَنْ يُتِمُّوا صَلاتَهُمْ وَأَرْخَى السِّتْرَ بَيْنَهُمْ وَبَيْنَهُ فَتُوُفِّيَ مِنْ يَوْمِهِ ذَلِكَ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسلم
