Testimony was given against or Husain al-Waleed bin ʿUqbah before ‘Uthman, that he drank alcohol. ʿAli spoke to ‘Uthman about him and he said: Here is your cousin, flog him. He said: Get up O Hasan (and flog him). He said: What do you have to do with this man? Let someone other than you do that. He said: Rather you felt incapable and weak. Get up, O ʿAbdullah bin Jafar, and flog him. ‘Ali ؓ started counting, and when he reached forty he said. Thatʿs enough-or:Stop-The Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave forty lashes, and Abu Bakr gave forty lashes, and ʿUmar completed it, making it eighty. And all are Sunnah.  

أحمد:١١٨٤ – حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ الدَّانَاجِ عَنْ حُضَيْنٍ قَالَ شُهِدَ عَلَى الْوَلِيدِ بْنِ عُقْبَةَ عِنْدَ عُثْمَانَ

أَنَّهُ شَرِبَ الْخَمْرَ فَكَلَّمَ عَلِيٌّ عُثْمَانَ فِيهِ فَقَالَ دُونَكَ ابْنُ عَمِّكَ فَاجْلِدْهُ فَقَالَ قُمْ يَا حَسَنُ فَقَالَ مَا لَكَ وَلِهَذَا وَلِّ هَذَا غَيْرَكَ فَقَالَ بَلْ عَجَزْتَ وَوَهَنْتَ وَضَعُفْتَ قُمْ يَا عَبْدَ اللهِ بْنَ جَعْفَرٍ فَجَلَدَهُ وَعَدَّ عَلِيٌّ فَلَمَّا كَمَّلَ أَرْبَعِينَ قَالَ حَسْبُكَ أَوِ امْسِكْ جَلَدَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ أَرْبَعِينَ وَأَبُو بَكْرٍ أَرْبَعِينَ وَكَمَّلَهَا عُمَرُ ثَمَانِينَ وَكُلٌّ سُنَّةٌ

Here is your cousin; carry out the hadd punishment on him. He said: O Hasan, get up and flog him. He said: You are not able to do that, appoint someone else for this. He said: Rather you are too weak and helpless. Get up, O Abdullah bin Ja’far. So ʿAbdullah began to strike him and ‘Ali counted until he reached forty. Then he said: Stop - or Thatʿs enough. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave forty lashes and Abu Bakr gave forty lashes,andʻUmar completed it and made it eighty. And all are Sunnah.  

أحمد:٦٢٤ – حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ أَبِي عَرُوبَةَ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ الدَّانَاجِ عَنْ حُضَيْنٍ أَبِي سَاسَانَ الرَّقَاشِيِّ قَالَ

إِنَّهُ قَدِمَ نَاسٌ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْكُوفَةِ عَلَى عُثْمَانَ فَأَخْبَرُوهُ بِمَا كَانَ مِنْ أَمْرِ الْوَلِيدِ أَيْ بِشُرْبِهِ الْخَمْرَ فَكَلَّمَهُ عَلِيٌّ فِي ذَلِكَ فَقَالَ دُونَكَ ابْنَ عَمِّكَ فَأَقِمْ عَلَيْهِ الْحَدَّ فَقَالَ يَا حَسَنُ قُمْ فَاجْلِدْهُ قَالَ مَا أَنْتَ مِنْ هَذَا فِي شَيْءٍ وَلِّ هَذَا غَيْرَكَ قَالَ بَلْ ضَعُفْتَ وَوَهَنْتَ وَعَجَزْتَ قُمْ يَا عَبْدَ اللهِ بْنَ جَعْفَرٍ فَجَعَلَ عَبْدُ اللهِ يَضْرِبُهُ وَيَعُدُّ عَلِيٌّ حَتَّى بَلَغَ أَرْبَعِينَ ثُمَّ قَالَ أَمْسِكْ أَوْ قَالَ كُفَّ جَلَدَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ أَرْبَعِينَ وَأَبُو بَكْرٍ أَرْبَعِينَ وَكَمَّلَهَا عُمَرُ ثَمَانِينَ وَكُلٌّ سُنَّةٌ

Shall I give you more?! The matter was referred to ‘Uthman ؓ , who ordered that he be flogged. ‘Ali said to al-Hasan bin ‘Ali Get up, O Hasan, and flog him. He said: What does that have to do with you? ‘Ali ؓ said: Rather you are incapable and weak; get up, O Abdullah bin Jafar and flog him. So ‘Abdullah bin Jaʿfar got up and flogged him, and ʿAli kept count. When he reached forty, he said to him; Stop. Then he said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave forty lashes for drinking alcohol, Abu Bakr gave forty lashes, as did ʼUmar at the beginning of his caliphate, Then ʿUmar completed it, making it eighty. And all of it is Sunnah.  

أحمد:١٢٣٠ – حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ أَخْبَرَنَا سَعِيدُ بْنُ أَبِي عَرُوبَةَ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ الدَّانَاجِ عَنْ حُضَيْنِ بْنِ الْمُنْذِرِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ بْنِ وَعْلَةَ أَنَّ الْوَلِيدَ بْنَ عُقْبَةَ صَلَّى بِالنَّاسِ الصُّبْحَ أَرْبَعًا ثُمَّ الْتَفَتَ إِلَيْهِمْ فَقَالَ

أَزِيدُكُمْ؟ فَرُفِعَ ذَلِكَ إِلَى عُثْمَانَ فَأَمَرَ بِهِ أَنْ يُجْلَدَ فَقَالَ عَلِيٌّ لِلحَسَنِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ قُمْ يَا حَسَنُ فَاجْلِدْهُ قَالَ وَفِيمَ أَنْتَ وَذَاكَ؟ فَقَالَ عَلِيٌّ بَلْ عَجَزْتَ وَوَهَنْتَ قُمْ يَا عَبْدَ اللهِ بْنَ جَعْفَرٍ فَاجْلِدْهُ فَقَامَ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ فَجَلَدَهُ وَعَلِيٌّ يَعُدُّ فَلَمَّا بَلَغَ أَرْبَعِينَ قَالَ لَهُ أَمْسِكْ ثُمَّ قَالَ ضَرَبَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فِي الْخَمْرِ أَرْبَعِينَ وَضَرَبَ أَبُو بَكْرٍأَرْبَعِينَ وَعُمَرُ صَدْرًا مِنْ خِلافَتِهِ ثُمَّ أَتَمَّهَا عُمَرُ ثَمَانِينَ وَكُلٌّ سُنَّةٌ

[Machine] "Stand up, O Hasan, and whip him! And what are you and this (person) for other than yourself?" He said, "Rather, I am weak and feeble, and I am unable." "Stand up, O Abdullah ibn Ja'far, and whip him," he said. So he began to whip him and Ali kept count until it reached forty, then he said, "Hold the whip of the Prophet of Allah ﷺ , Abu Bakr forty (lashes), and complete it eighty with Umar, and each (lash) is a Sunnah."  

الكبرى للنسائي:٥٢٥٠ – أَخْبَرَنَا حُمَيْدُ بْنُ مَسْعَدَةَ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنَا يَزِيدُ وَهُوَ ابْنُ زُرَيْعٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدُ بْنُ أَبِي عَرُوبَةَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ فَيْرُوزَ الدَّانَاجِ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ حُضَيْنَ بْنَ الْمُنْذِرِ أَنَّ الْوَلِيدَ بْنَ عُقْبَةَ صَلَّى بِأَهْلِ الْكُوفَةِ §صَلَاةَ الصُّبْحِ أَرْبَعَ رَكَعَاتٍ ثُمَّ قَالَ أَزِيدُكُمْ قَالَ فَشَهِدَ عَلَيْهِ عِنْدَ عُثَمَانَ أَنَّهُ شَارِبُ خَمْرٍ فَقَالَ عَلِيٌّ لِعُثْمَانَ «أَقِمْ عَلَيْهِ الْحَدَّ» قَالَ دُونَكَ ابْنَ عَمِّكَ فَأَقِمْ عَلَيْهِ الْحَدَّ قَالَ

«قُمْ يَا حَسَنُ فَاجْلِدْهُ وَفِيمَ أَنْتَ وَهَذَا وَلِّ غَيْرُكَ» قَالَ بَلْ ضَعُفْتُ وَوَهَنْتُ وَعَجَزْتُ قُمْ يَا عَبْدَ اللهِ بْنَ جَعْفَرٍ فَاجْلِدْهُ قَالَ فَجَعَلَ يَجْلِدُهُ وَعَلِيٌّ يَعُدُّ حَتَّى بَلَغَ أَرْبَعِينَ فَقَالَ أَمْسِكْ جَلَدَ نَبِيُّ اللهِ ﷺ وَأَبُو بَكْرٍ أَرْبَعِينَ وَكَمَّلَهَا عُمَرُ ثَمَانِينَ وَكُلٌّ سُنَّةٌ
