Abu Hurayra reported that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, "When one of you wishes for something, he should look to what he desires. He does not know what he will be given."  

الأدب المفرد:٧٩٤حَدَّثَنَا مُسَدَّدٌ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ عَنْ عُمَرَ بْنِ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ إِذَا تَمَنَّى أَحَدُكُمْ فَلْيَنْظُرْ مَا يَتَمَنَّى فَإِنَّهُ لاَ يَدْرِي مَا يُعْطَى

Had Messenger of Allah ﷺ not stated this.." None should make a request for death," I would have definitely done that.

tirmidhi:3604gYaḥyá b. Mūsá > ʿAmr b. ʿAwn > Abū ʿAwānah > ʿUmar b. Abū Salamah from his father

“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘Let one of you look at what it is that he wishes for. For verily, he does not know what of his wish shall be recorded.’”
