abudawud:2620ʿUbaydullāh b. Muʿādh al-ʿAnbarī from my father > Shuʿbah > Abū Bishr > ʿAbbād b. Shuraḥbīl

I suffered from drought; so I entered a garden of Medina, and rubbed an ear-corn. I ate and carried in my garment. Then its master came, he beat me and took my garment. He came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ who said to him: You did not teach him if he was ignorant; and you did not feed him if he was hungry. He ordered him, so he returned my garment to me, and gave me one or half a wasq (sixty or thirty sa's) of corn.

“I heard 'Abbad bin Shurahbil, a man from Banu Ghubar, say: ‘We suffered a year of famine, and I came to Al-Madinah. I came to one of its gardens and took an ear of corn, I rubbed it, ate some and put the rest in my garment. The owner of the garden came and beat me and took my garment. I came to the Prophet ﷺ and told him (what had happened). He said to the man: "You did not feed him when he was hungry and you did not teach him when he was ignorant."' Then the Prophet ﷺ told him to give back his garment and ordered that a Wasq or half a Wasq of food be brought to him."

[Machine] We were struck by famine, so I went to the city and entered one of its walls. I took a handful of grain, rubbed it, ate from it, and put some in my garment. The owner of the wall came and struck me and took my garment. So, I went to the Prophet ﷺ and he said, "Did you not know that if you were ignorant, you shouldn't have eaten from it? And if you were in need, you should have asked, and I would have provided for you." He returned my garment and ordered for me to be given half a sa' or a sa' of food.
