[Machine] the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , was commanded to pray for the people of Al-Baqi and he prayed for them three times in his night prayer. When he prayed for them the third time, he said, "O Abu Muawiyah, saddle my mount for me." So I saddled the mount for him, and he rode and went to the people of Al-Baqi. Then he alighted and stood among them. He said, "May you be refined by what you have faced from among the tribulations that come one after another, like pieces of a dark night. Some of them are worse than the others. May you be refined by what you have faced from them." Then the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , came and said, "O Abu Muawiyah, I have been given, or I have been given the choice of the keys of what Allah will open for my nation after me, whether it is Paradise or meeting with my Lord." I said, "By my father and mother, O Messenger of Allah, I chose the meeting with my Lord." He said, "I have chosen the meeting with my Lord." The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , did not stay except for seven or eight nights before he passed away.

The Prophet ﷺ praying for the people of al-Baqi and choosing to meet his Lord

ahmad:15996Abū al-Naḍr > al-Ḥakam b. Fuḍayl > Yaʿlá b. ʿAṭāʾ > ʿUbayd b. Jubayr > Abū Muwayhibah

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was commanded to pray for the people of al-Baqi, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed for them one night three times. Then when it was the second night, he said: "O Abu Muwaihibah, saddle my riding animal for me." He said: So he rode, and I walked until he came to them. Then he dismounted from his riding animal, and the animal halted, and he stood over them — or he said: he stood among them — and he said: "Glad tidings to you for what you are in, compared with what the people are in. The trials have come like pieces of the night, each one mounting upon another; the latter is more severe than the first. So glad tidings to you for what you are in."

Then he returned and said: "O Abu Muwaihibah, I have been given — or he said: I was given a choice between — the keys to what will be opened for my ummah after me and Paradise, or meeting my Lord." So I said: By my father and mother, O Messenger of Allah, then tell us. He said: "That it would be turned back on its heels for as long as Allah wills; so I chose the meeting of my Lord ﷻ." He remained only seven or eight days after that until he was taken in death ﷺ. Abu al-Nadr said once: It is turned back on its heels.

[Machine] On the authority of Abu Muwayhibah, the servant of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , he said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me, "I have been commanded to seek forgiveness for the people of Al-Baqi', so come with me." So I went with him in the middle of the night. When he stood near them, he said, "Peace be upon you, O people of the graves! May Allah honor you with what He honors those who have passed before you. If you knew what Allah has saved you from, the trials (and tribulations) to come would appear to you like the darkest part of the night. It (the trials) will follow one after another, each worse than the previous one.

Then he turned towards me and said, 'O Abu Muwayhibah, I have been given the keys to the treasures of the world, and the keys to eternal life in it, then Paradise. I was given the choice between that and meeting my Lord.' I said, 'May my father and mother be sacrificed for you, take the keys to the treasures of the world, and the keys to eternal life in it, then Paradise.' He said, 'No, by Allah, O Abu Muwayhibah, I have chosen to meet my Lord.' Then he sought forgiveness for the people of Al-Baqi' and left. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ began to feel the pain in which he died.
