[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ consulted the Muslims regarding what would unite them in prayer. They suggested the horn, but he disliked it because of the Jews. Then the bell was mentioned, but he disliked it because of the Christians. That night, Abdullah bin Zaid, a man from the Ansar, and Umar bin Al-Khattab knocked on the door of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . The Ansari man suggested that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ call for a caller, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered Bilal to make the call to prayer.  

الطبراني:١٣١٤٠حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ ثنا وَهْبُ بْنُ بَقِيَّةَ ثنا خَالِدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ إِسْحَاقَ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ عَنْ سَالِمٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ اسْتَشَارَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ فِيمَا يَجْمَعُهُمْ فِي الصَّلَاةِ فَقَالُوا الْبُوقُ فَكَرِهَهُ مِنْ أَجْلِ الْيَهُودِ ثُمَّ ذُكِرَ النَّاقُوسُ فَكَرِهَهُ مِنْ أَجْلِ النَّصَارَى فَأُرِيَ تِلْكَ اللَّيْلَةَ النِّدَاءَ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ زَيْدٍ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ وَعُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ فَطَرَقَ الْأَنْصَارِيُّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ لَيْلًا «فَأَمَرَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ بِلَالًا فَأَذَّنَ بِهِ»

The Prophet consulted the people as to how he could call them to the prayer. They suggested a horn, but he disliked that because of the Jews (because the Jews used a horn). Then they suggested a bell but he disliked that because of the Christians (because the Christians used a bell). Then that night the call to the prayer was shown in a dream to a man among the Ansar whose name was 'Abdullah bin Zaid, and to 'Umar bin Khattab. The Ansari man came to the Messenger of Allah at night, and the Messenger of Allah commanded Bilal to give the call to the prayer. (Da'if)Zuhri said: "Bilal added the phrase "As-salatu khairum minan-nawm (the prayer is better than sleep)" to the call for the morning prayer, and the Messenger of Allah approved of that." 'Umar said: "O Messenger of Allah, I saw the same as he did, but he beat me to it."

"عَن الزُّهْرِىِّ، عَنْ سَالمٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ: اسْتَشَار النَّبِىُّ ﷺ فِيمَا يَجْمَعُهُمْ عَلَى الصَّلاَةِ، فَقَالُوا: الْبُوقُ، فَكَرِهَهُ مِنْ أَجْلِ الْيَهُودِ، ثُمَّ ذكِرَ النَّاقُوسُ فَكَرِهَهُ مِنْ أَجْلِ النَّصَارَى، فَأُرِىَ تِلْكَ اللَّيْلَة النِّدَاءَ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الأَنْصَارِ يُقَالُ لَهُ عَبْدُ الله بْنُ زَيْدٍ، وَعُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ، وَطَرَقَ الأَنْصَارِىُّ رَسُولَ الله ﷺ لَيْلًا، فَأَمَرَ رَسُولُ الله ﷺ بِلاَلًا فَأذَّنَ بِهِ، قَالَ الزُّهْرِىُّ: وَزَادَ بِلاَلٌ فِى بَدْءِ صَلاَةِ الْفَجْرِ: الصَّلاَةُ خَيْرٌ مِنَ النَّوْمِ، فَأَقَرَّهَا نَبِىُّ الله ﷺ فَقَالَ عُمَرُ: أَمَا إِنِّى قَدْ رَأَيْتُ مِثْلَ الَّذِى رَأَى وَلَكِنَّهُ سَبَقَنِى".
