Some property or something was brought to Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he distributed it. He gave to some men and ignored the others. Later he got the news of his being admonished by those whom he had ignored. So he glorified and praised Allah and said, "Amma ba'du. By Allah, I may give to a man and ignore another, although the one whom I ignore is more beloved to me than the one whom I give. But I give to some people as I feel that they have no patience and no contentment in their hearts and I leave those who are patient and self-content with the goodness and wealth which Allah has put into their hearts and ʿAmr bin Taghlib is one of them." ʿAmr added, By Allah! Those words of Allah's Apostle are more beloved to me than the best red camels.

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ أُتِيَ بِمَالٍ أَوْ سَبْىٍ فَقَسَمَهُ فَأَعْطَى رِجَالاً وَتَرَكَ رِجَالاً فَبَلَغَهُ أَنَّ الَّذِينَ تَرَكَ عَتَبُوا فَحَمِدَ اللَّهَ ثُمَّ أَثْنَى عَلَيْهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ أَمَّا بَعْدُ فَوَاللَّهِ إِنِّي لأُعْطِي الرَّجُلَ وَأَدَعُ الرَّجُلَ وَالَّذِي أَدَعُ أَحَبُّ إِلَىَّ مِنَ الَّذِي أُعْطِي وَلَكِنْ أُعْطِي أَقْوَامًا لِمَا أَرَى فِي قُلُوبِهِمْ مِنَ الْجَزَعِ وَالْهَلَعِ وَأَكِلُ أَقْوَامًا إِلَى مَا جَعَلَ اللَّهُ فِي قُلُوبِهِمْ مِنَ الْغِنَى وَالْخَيْرِ فِيهِمْ عَمْرُو بْنُ تَغْلِبَ فَوَاللَّهِ مَا أُحِبُّ أَنَّ لِي بِكَلِمَةِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ حُمْرَ النَّعَمِ

Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave (gifts) to some people to the exclusion of some others. The latter seemed to be displeased by that. The Prophet ﷺ said, "I give to some people, lest they should deviate from True Faith or lose patience, while I refer other people to the goodness and contentment which Allah has put in their hearts, and ʿAmr bin Taghlib is amongst them." ʿAmr bin Taghlib said, "The statement of Allah's Apostle is dearer to me than red camels." Narrated Al-Hasan: ʿAmr bin Taghlib told us that Messenger of Allah ﷺ got some property or some war prisoners and he distributed them in the above way (i.e. giving to some people to the exclusion of others) .

أَعْطَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَوْمًا وَمَنَعَ آخَرِينَ فَكَأَنَّهُمْ عَتَبُوا عَلَيْهِ فَقَالَ إِنِّي أُعْطِي قَوْمًا أَخَافُ ظَلَعَهُمْ وَجَزَعَهُمْ وَأَكِلُ أَقْوَامًا إِلَى مَا جَعَلَ اللَّهُ فِي قُلُوبِهِمْ مِنَ الْخَيْرِ وَالْغِنَى مِنْهُمْ عَمْرُو بْنُ تَغْلِبَ فَقَالَ عَمْرُو بْنُ تَغْلِبَ مَا أُحِبُّ أَنَّ لِي بِكَلِمَةِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ حُمْرَ النَّعَمِ وَزَادَ أَبُو عَاصِمٍ عَنْ جَرِيرٍ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ الْحَسَنَ يَقُولُ حَدَّثَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ تَغْلِبَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ أُتِيَ بِمَالٍ أَوْ بِسَبْىٍ فَقَسَمَهُ بِهَذَا

ʿAmr bin Taghlib said, "Some property was given to the Prophet ﷺ and he gave it to some people and withheld it from some others. Then he came to know that they (the latter) were dissatisfied. So the Prophet said, 'I give to one man and leave (do not give) another, and the one to whom I do not give is dearer to me than the one to whom I give. I give to some people because of the impatience and discontent present in their hearts, and leave other people because of the content and goodness Allah has bestowed on them, and one of them is ʿAmr bin Taghlib." ʿAmr bin Taghlib said, "The sentence which Messenger of Allah ﷺ said in my favor is dearer to me than the possession of nice red camels."

أَتَى النَّبِيَّ ﷺ مَالٌ فَأَعْطَى قَوْمًا وَمَنَعَ آخَرِينَ فَبَلَغَهُ أَنَّهُمْ عَتَبُوا فَقَالَ إِنِّي أُعْطِي الرَّجُلَ وَأَدَعُ الرَّجُلَ وَالَّذِي أَدَعُ أَحَبُّ إِلَىَّ مِنَ الَّذِي أُعْطِي أُعْطِي أَقْوَامًا لِمَا فِي قُلُوبِهِمْ مِنَ الْجَزَعِ وَالْهَلَعِ وَأَكِلُ أَقْوَامًا إِلَى مَا جَعَلَ اللَّهُ فِي قُلُوبِهِمْ مِنَ الْغِنَى وَالْخَيْرِ مِنْهُمْ عَمْرُو بْنُ تَغْلِبَ فَقَالَ عَمْرٌو مَا أُحِبُّ أَنَّ لِي بِكَلِمَةِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ حُمْرَ النَّعَمِ

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ received something, so he gave it to some people and left some others. Jarir said: "He gave it to men and left men." He said: "So it reached him that those who were left felt resentful and said: 'He gives to some people and leaves others.' " So he ascended the pulpit, praised Allah, and extolled Him, then he said: "Verily, I give to some people and leave some others. I give to men and leave men." 'Affan said: "That one and the one he leaves are both dearer to me than the one he gives. I give to people what they have in their hearts of distress and fear, and I withhold from people what Allah has put in their hearts of wealth and goodness." 'Amr bin Taghlib said: "I used to sit facing the face of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , and he said: 'I do not like to have a word of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ be the cause of the she-camel's humps."

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ أَتَاهُ شَيْءٌ فَأَعْطَاهُ نَاسًا وَتَرَكَ نَاسًا وَقَالَ جَرِيرٌ أَعْطَى رِجَالًا وَتَرَكَ رِجَالًا قَالَ فَبَلَغَهُ عَنْ الَّذِينَ تَرَكَ أَنَّهُمْ عَتِبُوا وَقَالُوا قَالَ فَصَعِدَ الْمِنْبَرَ فَحَمِدَ اللهَ وَأَثْنَى عَلَيْهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ إِنِّي أُعْطِي نَاسًا وَأَدَعُ نَاسًا وَأُعْطِي رِجَالًا وَأَدَعُ رِجَالًا قَالَ عَفَّانُ قَالَ ذِي وَذِي وَالَّذِي أَدَعُ أَحَبُّإِلَيَّ مِنْ الَّذِي أُعْطِي أُعْطِي أُنَاسًا لِمَا فِي قُلُوبِهِمْ مِنْ الْجَزَعِ وَالْهَلَعِ وَأَكِلُ قَوْمًا إِلَى مَا جَعَلَ اللهُ فِي قُلُوبِهِمْ مِنْ الْغِنَى وَالْخَيْرِ مِنْهُمْ عَمْرُو بْنُ تَغْلِبَ قَالَ وَكُنْتُ جَالِسًا تِلْقَاءَ وَجْهِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ مَا أُحِبُّ أَنَّ لِي بِكَلِمَةِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ حُمْرَ النَّعَمِ

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Indeed, I give to some people and deny others. The ones I dislike to be given are more beloved to me than the ones I actually give. I give people what I fear will cause them panic and distress, and I deprive others from what Allah has placed of wealth and goodness in their hearts. 'Amr ibn Taghlib said, 'Amr replied, By Allah, I do not wish to have any word from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that is like red camels.'"

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِنِّي أُعْطِيأَقْوَامًا وَأَرُدُّ آخَرِينَ وَالَّذِينَ أَدَعُ أَحَبُّ إِلَيَّ مِنَ الَّذِينَ أُعْطِي أُعْطِي أَقْوَامًا لِمَا أَخَافُ مِنْ هَلَعِهِمْ وَجَزَعِهِمْ وَأَكِلُ أَقْوَامًا إِلَى مَا جَعَلَ اللهُ فِي قُلُوبِهِمْ مِنَ الْغِنَى وَالْخَيْرِ مِنْهُمْ عَمْرُو بْنُ تَغْلِبَ قَالَ قَالَ عَمْرٌو فَوَاللهِ مَا أُحِبُّ أَنَّ لِي بِكَلِمَةِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ حُمْرَ النَّعَمِ

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave some people and prevented others, and it reached him that they complained. So he addressed the people, praised and glorified Allah, and said, "Verily, I give some people and withhold from others, and they complain about me. But I, indeed, love to give a man and others more than him, because I give them what is in their hearts of fear and distress. And I prevent a people because Allah has placed in their hearts richness and goodness." 'Amr ibn Taghlib said, "So what pleased me the most from the statement of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ is 'Humar al-na'am'."

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ أَعْطَى ناسًا وَمَنَع نَاسًا فَبَلَغَهُ أَنَّهُمْ عَتَبُوا فَخَطَبَ النَّاسَ فَحَمِدَ اللهَ وَأَثْنَى عَلَيْهِ وَقَالَ إِنِّي أَعْطَيْتُ نَاسًا وَتَرَكْتُ نَاسًا فَعَتَبُوا عَلِيَّ وَإِنِّي لَأُعْطِي الْعَطَاءَ الرَّجُلًَ وَغَيْرُهُ أَحَبُّ إِلَيَّ مِنْهُ وَإِنَّمَا أُعْطِيهِمْ لِمَا فِي قُلُوبِهِمْ مِنَ الْهَلَعِ وَالْجَزَعِ وَأَمْنَعُ قَوْمًا لِمَا جَعَلَ اللهُ فِي قُلُوبِهِمْ مِنَ الْغِنَى وَالْخَيْرِ مِنْهُمْ عَمْرُو بْنُ تَغْلِبَ قَالَ عَمْرٌو فَمَا يَسُرُّنِي بِكَلِمَةِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ حُمْرُ النَّعَم

"أما بعدُ فَوَاللهِ إِنى لأعطى الرجلَ وأدعُ الرجلَ والذي أدعُ أحَبَّ إلي مِنَ الذي أعطى، ولَكِنْ أُعطى أقْوَامًا لِما أرى في قلوبِهم من الجَزعَ والهَلعَ، وأكِل أقْوامًا إلى ما جَعَلَ اللهُ في قلوبهم من الغنى، والخَيرِ. منهم عَمْرو بن تغلِب" .
