Gifts taken by appointed workers

bukhari:6636Abū al-Yamān > Shuʿayb > al-Zuhrī > ʿUrwah > Abū Ḥumayd al-Sāʿidī

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ appointed a worker, and when the worker finished his task he came to him and said, "O Messenger of Allah, this is for you, and this was gifted to me." So he said to him: "Why did you not sit in your father's and mother's house and see whether gifts would be given to you or not?" Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood one evening after the prayer, declared the testimony of faith, and praised Allah ﷻ as He deserves, then said: "Now then, what is the matter with a worker whom we appoint, and he comes to us and says: 'This is from your work, and this was gifted to me'? Why did he not sit in his father's and mother's house and see whether gifts would be given to him or not? By the One in whose Hand is Muhammad's soul, none of you takes anything from it unlawfully except that he will come with it on the Day of Resurrection carrying it on his neck: if it is a camel, he will bring it with its grunting; if it is a cow, he will bring it with its mooing; and if it is a sheep, he will bring it bleating. I have conveyed." Abu Humaid said: Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ raised his hand until we could see the whiteness of his armpits. Abu Humaid said: Zaid ibn Thabit also heard that with me from the Prophet ﷺ, so ask him.

muslim:1832aAbū Bakr b. Abū Shaybah And ʿAmrw al-Nāqid And Ibn Abū ʿUmar Wa-al-Lafẓ Lʾabī Bakr > Sufyān b. ʿUyaynah > al-Zuhrī > ʿUrwah > Abū Ḥumayd al-Sāʿidī

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ appointed a man from the Asad tribe who was called Ibn Lutbiyya in charge of Sadaqa (i. e. authorised hign to receive Sadaqa from the people on behalf of the State. When he returned (with the collictions), he said: This is for you and (this is mine as) it was presented to me as a gift. The narrator said: The Messenger of Allah (may peace be upod him) stood on the pulpit and praised God and extolled Him. Then he said: What about a State official whom I give an assignment and who (comes and) says: This is for you and this has been presented to me as a gift? Why didn't he remain in the house of his father or the house of his mother so that he could observe whether gifts were presented to him or not. By the Being in Whose Hand is the life of Muhammad, any one of you will not take anything from it but will bring it on the Day of Judgment, carrying on his neck a camel that will be growling, or a cow that will be bellowing or an ewe that will be bleating. Then he raised his hands so that we could see the whiteness of his armpits. Then he said twice: O God, I have conveyed (Thy Commandments).
