"We thought that your death would come when fighting in the cause of Allah." He said: "You think that martyrdom only comes when one is killed in the cause of Allah. In that case your martyrs would be few. Being killed in the cause of Allah is martyrdom, dying of an abdominal complaint is martyrdom, being burned to death is martyrdom, drowning is martyrdom, being crushed beneath a falling wall is martyrdom, dying of pleurisy is martyrdom, and the woman who dies along with her fetus is a martyr." A man said: "Are you weeping when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ is sitting here?" He said: "Let them be, but if he dies on one should weep for him."

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَادَ جَبْرًا فَلَمَّا دَخَلَ سَمِعَ النِّسَاءَ يَبْكِينَ وَيَقُلْنَ كُنَّا نَحْسُبُ وَفَاتَكَ قَتْلاً فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ فَقَالَ وَمَا تَعُدُّونَ الشَّهَادَةَ إِلاَّ مَنْ قُتِلَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ إِنَّ شُهَدَاءَكُمْ إِذًا لَقَلِيلٌ الْقَتْلُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ شَهَادَةٌ وَالْبَطْنُ شَهَادَةٌ وَالْحَرَقُ شَهَادَةٌ وَالْغَرَقُ شَهَادَةٌ وَالْمَغْمُومُ يَعْنِي الْهَدِمَ شَهَادَةٌ وَالْمَجْنُوبُ شَهَادَةٌ وَالْمَرْأَةُ تَمُوتُ بِجُمْعٍ شَهِيدَةٌ قَالَ رَجُلٌ أَتَبْكِينَ وَرَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَاعِدٌ قَالَ دَعْهُنَّ فَإِذَا وَجَبَ فَلاَ تَبْكِيَنَّ عَلَيْهِ بَاكِيَةٌ

“We hoped that when he died it would be as a martyr in the cause of Allah.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “In that case the martyrs of my nation would be few. Being killed in the cause of Allah is martyrdom; dying of the plague is martyrdom; when a pregnant woman dies in childbirth that is martyrdom; and dying of drowning, or burning, or of pleurisy, is martyrdom.”

أَنَّهُ مَرِضَ فَأَتَاهُ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ يَعُودُهُ فَقَالَ قَائِلٌ مِنْ أَهْلِهِ إِنْ كُنَّا لَنَرْجُو أَنْ تَكُونَ وَفَاتُهُ قَتْلَ شَهَادَةٍ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِنَّ شُهَدَاءَ أُمَّتِي إِذًا لَقَلِيلٌ الْقَتْلُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ شَهَادَةٌ وَالْمَطْعُونُ شَهَادَةٌ وَالْمَرْأَةُ تَمُوتُ بِجُمْعٍ شَهَادَةٌ يَعْنِي الْحَامِلَ وَالْغَرِقُ وَالْحَرِقُ وَالْمَجْنُوبُ يَعْنِي ذَاتَ الْجَنْبِ شَهَادَةٌ

Yahya related to me from Malik from Abdullah ibn Abdullah ibn Jabir ibn Atik that Atik ibn al-Harith, the grandfather of Abdullah ibn Abdullah ibn Jabir on his mother's side, told him that Jabir ibn Atik had told him that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to visit Abdullah ibn Thabit and found him in his death-throes. He called to him but he did not reply. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "We belong to Allah, and to Him we are returning," and added, "You are being taken from us, Abur-Rabiʿ." The women cried out and wept, and Jabir began to silence them. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Leave them, and when the necessary time comes, none of the women should cry." They said, "Messenger of Allah, what is the necessary time?" and he replied, "When he dies." The dying man's daughter said, "By Allah, I hope that you will be a martyr, for you have completed your preparations for battle," and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Allah has made his reward fall according to his intention. What do you consider dying a martyr to be?" They said, "Death in the way of Allah." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "There are seven kinds of martyr other than those killed in the way of Allah. Someone who is killed by the plague is a martyr, someone who drowns is a martyr, someone who dies of pleurisy is a martyr, someone who dies of a disease of the belly is a martyr, someone who dies by fire is a martyr, someone who dies under a falling building is a martyr and a woman who dies in childbirth is a martyr."

أَخْبَرَهُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ جَاءَ يَعُودُ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ ثَابِتٍ فَوَجَدَهُ قَدْ غُلِبَ عَلَيْهِ فَصَاحَ بِهِ فَلَمْ يُجِبْهُ فَاسْتَرْجَعَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَقَالَ غُلِبْنَا عَلَيْكَ يَا أَبَا الرَّبِيعِ فَصَاحَ النِّسْوَةُ وَبَكَيْنَ فَجَعَلَ جَابِرٌ يُسَكِّتُهُنَّ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ دَعْهُنَّ فَإِذَا وَجَبَ فَلاَ تَبْكِيَنَّ بَاكِيَةٌ قَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ وَمَا الْوُجُوبُ قَالَ إِذَا مَاتَ فَقَالَتِ ابْنَتُهُ وَاللَّهِ إِنْ كُنْتُ لأَرْجُو أَنْ تَكُونَ شَهِيدًا فَإِنَّكَ كُنْتَ قَدْ قَضَيْتَ جِهَازَكَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِنَّ اللَّهَ قَدْ أَوْقَعَ أَجْرَهُ عَلَى قَدْرِ نِيَّتِهِ وَمَا تَعُدُّونَ الشَّهَادَةَ قَالُوا الْقَتْلُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ الشُّهَدَاءُ سَبْعَةٌ سِوَى الْقَتْلِ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ الْمَطْعُونُ شَهِيدٌ وَالْغَرِقُ شَهِيدٌ وَصَاحِبُ ذَاتِ الْجَنْبِ شَهِيدٌ وَالْمَبْطُونُ شَهِيدٌ وَالْحَرِقُ شَهِيدٌ وَالَّذِي يَمُوتُ تَحْتَ الْهَدْمِ شَهِيدٌ وَالْمَرْأَةُ تَمُوتُ بِجُمْعٍ شَهِيدٌ

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to visit Abdullah ibn Thabit who was ill. He found that he was dominated (by the divine decree). The Messenger of Allah ﷺ called him loudly, but he did not respond. He uttered the Qur'anic verse "We belong to Allah and to Him do we return" and he said: We have been dominated against you, AburRabi'. Then the women cried and wept, and Ibn Atik began to silence them. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Leave them, when the divine decree is made, no woman should weep. They (the people) asked: What is necessary happening, Messenger of Allah? He replied: Death. His daughter said: I hope you will be a martyr, for you have completed your preparations for jihad. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Allah Most High gave him a reward according to his intentions. What do you consider martyrdom? They said: Being killed in the cause of Allah. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: There are seven types of martyrdom in addition to being killed in Allah's cause: one who dies of plague is a martyr; one who is drowned is a martyr; one who dies of pleurisy is a martyr; one who dies of an internal complaint is a martyr; one who is burnt to death is a martyr; who one is killed by a building falling on him is a martyr; and a woman who dies while pregnant is a martyr. [AI] That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ visited the son of his paternal cousin Jabir al-Ansari and his family began to cry for him. Jabir said to them, "Do not distress the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said, "Let them cry for him as long as he is alive, but when he is washed and shrouded, they should remain silent." Some of them said, "We never thought that your death would occur on your bed until you are killed in the path of Allah with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Is martyrdom only attained by being killed in the path of Allah? Verily, the martyrs of my ummah (Muslim nation) are few. Indeed, being stabbed or dying from the plague is martyrdom, and a pregnant woman dies with her child, that is martyrdom. Burning, drowning, collapse of a building, and death due to a side effect, all of them are martyrdom."

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ عَادَ ابْنَ أَخِي جَبْرَ الْأَنْصَارِيَّ فَجَعَلَ أَهْلُهُ يَبْكُونَ عَلَيْهِ فَقَالَ لَهُمْ جَبْرٌ لَا تُؤْذُوا رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «دَعْهُنَّ فَلْيَبْكِينَ مَا دَامَ حَيًّا فَإِذَا وَجَبَ فَلْيَسْكُتْنَ» فَقَالَ بَعْضُهُمْ مَا كُنَّا نَرَى أنْ يَكُونَ مَوْتُكَ عَلَى فِرَاشِكَ حَتَّى تُقْتَلَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «أَوَ مَا الشَّهَادَةُ إِلَّا فِي الْقَتْلِ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ؟ إِنَّ شُهَدَاءَ أُمَّتِي إِذَنْ لَقَلِيلٌ إِنَّ الطَّعْنَ وَالطَّاعُونَ شَهَادَةٌ وَالْبَطْنَ شَهَادَةٌ وَالنُّفَسَاءَ بِجُمُعٍ شَهَادَةٌ وَالْحَرَقَ شَهَادَةٌ وَالْغَرَقَ شَهَادَةٌ وَالْهَدْمَ شَهَادَةٌ وذَاتَ الْجَنْبِ شَهَادَةٌ»

[AI] I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with the Zakat three times, and he said, "Why did you not bring the witness with you?" They said, "The one who is killed in the way of Allah." He said, "Indeed, the martyrs of my Ummah (nation) are few. Death in the way of Allah is martyrdom, the plague is martyrdom, a woman who dies during childbirth is martyrdom, death by burning is martyrdom, drowning is martyrdom, death by plague is martyrdom, and death due to a stomach disease is martyrdom."

أَتَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ بِالزَّكاةِ ثَلَاثَ مِرَارٍ فَقَالَ «مَا تَعُدُّونَ الشَّهِيدَ فِيكُمْ؟» قَالُوا الَّذِي يُقْتَلُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ قَالَ «إِنَّ شُهَدَاءَ أُمَّتِي إِذَنْ لَقَلِيلٌ الْقَتْلُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ شَهَادَةٌ وَالطَّاعُونُ شَهَادَةٌ وَالنُّفَسَاءُ شَهَادَةٌ وَالْحَرْقُ شَهَادَةٌ وَالْغَرَقُ شَهَادَةٌ وَالسُّلُّ شَهَادَةٌ وَالْبَطْنُ شَهَادَةٌ»

"وَمَا تَعُدُّونَ الشَّهادَةَ إِلا مَنْ قُتِلَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ؟ إِنَّ شُهَدَاءَكُم إِذَنْ لَقَلِيلٌ، الْقَتْلُ فِي سَبِيلِ الله شَهَادَةٌ، وَالْبَطْنُ شَهادَةٌ والحَرَقُ شَهَادَةٌ، والغَرَقُ شهَادَةٌ، والمَغْمُومُ -يَعْنِي: الهَدْمَ- شَهَادَةٌ، والمجْنُوبُ شَهادَةٌ، والْمرْأَةُ تَمُوتُ بِجُمْعٍ شَهِيدَةٌ".
