HAKIM 4493:
from Qātal —
[Machine] Umar fought the polytheists in Masjid al-Makkah and he continued to fight them from dawn until the sun was directly above his head. He then said, "I have become blind." He sat down, and a man wearing a red cloak and a Qumissiyya shirt with a handsome face came to him and uncovered his eyes. He asked them, "What do you want from this man?" They said, "No, by Allah, except that he has been affected." He said, "What an excellent man he is, who has chosen a religion for himself. Leave him, for what he has chosen for himself. Do you think the Banu 'Adi tribe would be pleased if Umar was killed? No, by Allah, the Banu 'Adi tribe would not be pleased." Umar said that day, "O enemies of Allah, by Allah, if we had found three hundred, we would have driven you out from here." I asked my father afterwards, "Who was that man who defended you that day?" He said, "That was Al-Aas ibn Wa'il, the father of Amr ibn Al-Aas."
