"مَا كَانَ مِنْهَا فِي طَرِيقِ الْمِيتاءِ والْقَرْيَةِ الْجَامِعَةِ، فَعَرِّفْهَا سَنَةً فإنْ جَاءَ طَالبُهَا فادْفَعْهَا إِلَيه، وإنْ لَمْ يَأْتِ فَهى لَكَ، وَمَا كَانَ فِي الْخَرَاب فَفِيهَا وَفِي الرِّكَازِ الْخُمُسِ".
"The Messenger of Allah was asked about Al-Luqath.[2] He said: "That which is found on a much-traveled road or in an inhabited village, announce it for a year. If its owner comes (and takes it, well and good), otherwise it is yours. That which was not found on a much-traveled road or in an inhabited village is subject to the Khuns, as is Rikaz."'[1]

If its owner comes forward, return it to them. If no one claims it, then it belongs to you. If it is found in ruins, then keep it. If it is found in a she-camel's saddlebag, give a fifth as charity."
