"عَنْ جَرِيرٍ قَالَ: بَعَثَ إِلَيَّ عَليُّ بْنُ أَبِى طَالِبٍ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ، وَالأَشْعَثَ بْنَ قَيْسٍ، وَأَنَا بِقَرْقيسياء فَقَالَا: إِنَّ أَمِيرَ الْمؤْمِنينَ يُقْرِئُكَ السَّلَامَ، (ويقول: (*))

نعْمَ مَا أرَاكَ (*) الله مِنْ مُفَارَقَتِكَ مُعَاوِيَةَ، وَإِنِّى أُنْزِلُكَ مِنِّى بِمَنْزِلَةِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ الَّتِي أَنَزَلَكَها، فَقُلْتُ: إِنَّ رسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ بَعَثَنِى إِلَى الْيَمَنِ أُقَاتِلُهُم، وَأَدْعُوهُمْ أَنْ يَقُولُوا لَا إِلَهَ إلَّا اللهُ، فَإِذَا قاَلُوهَا: حَرُمَتْ دِمَاؤهُم وَأَمْوَالُهُم، فَلَا أُقَاتِلُ أَحَدًا يَقُولُ: لَا إِلَهَ إلَّا اللهُ: فَرَجَعْنَا عَلَى ذَلِكَ".

[Machine] Ali ibn Abi Talib and Al-Ash'ath ibn Qays were sent to me while I was in Qirqisiya. They said, "The Commander of the Believers sends you his greetings and says, 'How great it is to see that Allah has made you separate from Muawiyah. And I have appointed you to a position similar to that of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ appointed you.'"

Jareer replied, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent me to Yemen to fight them and invite them to say, 'There is no deity but Allah.' Once they say it, their blood and wealth will be protected. And I do not fight anyone who says, 'There is no deity but Allah.'" We agreed to that.
