We were behind the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at the dawn prayer, and he recited (the passage), but the recitation became difficult for him. Then when he finished, he said: Perhaps you recite behind your imam? We replied: Yes, it is so, Messenger of Allah. He said: Do not do so except when it is Fatihat al-Kitab, for he who does not recite it is not credited with having prayed.

كُنَّا خَلْفَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فِي صَلاَةِ الْفَجْرِ فَقَرَأَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَثَقُلَتْ عَلَيْهِ الْقِرَاءَةُ فَلَمَّا فَرَغَ قَالَ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَقْرَءُونَ خَلْفَ إِمَامِكُمْ قُلْنَا نَعَمْ هَذَا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ لاَ تَفْعَلُوا إِلاَّ بِفَاتِحَةِ الْكِتَابِ فَإِنَّهُ لاَ صَلاَةَ لِمَنْ لَمْ يَقْرَأْ بِهَا

[AI] "On the authority of a companion of the Prophet ﷺ , he said, the Prophet ﷺ said, "Perhaps you recite (the Quran) while the imam recites it twice or three times?" They said, "O Messenger of Allah, we do so." He said, "Do not do so, unless one of you recites Al-Fatiha, the opening chapter of the Book."

عَنْ رَجُلٍ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ قَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَقْرَءُونَ وَالْإِمَامُ يَقْرَأُ مَرَّتَيْنِ أَوْ ثَلَاثًا قَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنَّا لَنَفْعَلُ قَالَ فَلَا تَفْعَلُوا إِلَّا أَنْ يَقْرَأَ أَحَدُكُمْ بِفَاتِحَةِ الْكِتَابِ

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed with us and recited, and the recitation became difficult for him. When he finished, he said, "Do you recite?" We said, "Yes, O Messenger of Allah." He said, "Do not recite except with the Opening of the Book (Surah Al-Fatiha), for there is no prayer without it."

صَلَّى بِنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَرَأَ فَثَقُلَتْ عَلَيْهِ الْقِرَاءَةُ فَلَمَّا فَرَغَ قَالَ تَقْرَءُونَ؟ قُلْنَا نَعَمْ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَالَ لَا عَلَيْكُمْ أَنْ لَا تَفْعَلُوا إِلَّا بِفَاتِحَةِ الْكِتَابِ؛ فَإِنَّهُ لَا صَلَاةَ إِلَّا بِهَا

"Messenger of Allah prayed the Subh prayer, and he had difficulty with the recitation. When turned (after finishing) he said: 'I think that you are reciting behind your Imam?'" He said: "We said: 'Yes, Messenger of Allah, by Allah!' He said: 'Do not do that, except for Umm Al-Kitab, for there is no Salat for one who does not recite it.'" صَلَّى بِنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ صَلَاةَ الْغَدَاةِ فَثَقُلَتْ عَلَيْهِ الْقِرَاءَةُ فَلَمَّا انْصَرَفَ قَالَ إِنِّي لَأَرَاكُمْ تَقْرَءُونَ وَرَاءَ إِمَامِكُمْ قُلْنَا نَعَمْ وَاللهِ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنَّا لَنَفْعَلُ هَذَا قَالَ فَلَا تَفْعَلُوا إِلَّا بِأُمِّ الْقُرْآنِ؛ فَإِنَّهُ لَا صَلَاةَ لِمَنْ لَمْ يَقْرَأْ بِهَا

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed Fajr prayer with us, and recitation became heavy for him during it. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ finished his prayer, he turned towards us with his face and said, "I see you reciting behind your imam when he recites aloud." We replied, "Yes, indeed, O Messenger of Allah, this is what we do." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Do not do so except with the Mother of the Quran, for there is no prayer for the one who does not recite it."

صَلَّى بِنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ الصُّبْحَ فَثَقُلَتْ عَلَيْهِ فِيهَا الْقِرَاءَةُ فَلَمَّا انْصَرَفَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ مِنْ صَلَاتِهِ أَقْبَلَ عَلَيْنَا بِوَجْهِهِ فَقَالَ إِنِّي لَأَرَاكُمْ تَقْرَءُونَ خَلْفَإِمَامِكُمْ إِذَا جَهَرَ قَالَ قُلْنَا أَجَلْ (1 وَاللهِ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ هَذَا 1) فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ لَا تَفْعَلُوا إِلَّا بِأُمِّ الْقُرْآنِ؛ فَإِنَّهُ لَا صَلَاةَ لِمَنْ لَمْ يَقْرَأْ بِهَا

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed with us, and recitation became difficult for him. When he finished, he asked, "Did you recite?" We replied, "Yes, Messenger of Allah." He said, "It is not necessary for you to recite except for the Opening Chapter of the Book (Al-Fatiha), as there is no prayer without it."

صَلَّى بِنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَرَأَ فَثَقُلَتْ عَلَيْهِ الْقِرَاءَةُ فَلَمَّا فَرَغَ قَالَ تَقْرَءُونَ؟ قُلْنَا نَعَمْ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَالَ فَلَا عَلَيْكُمْ أَنْ لَا تَفْعَلُوا إِلَّا بِفَاتِحَةِ الْكِتَابِ؛ فَإِنَّهُ لَا صَلَاةَ إِلَّا بِهَا

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed with us in the morning and the recitation became difficult for him. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ finished his prayer, he turned towards us and said, "I see you reciting behind your imam when he raises his voice." We said, "Yes, indeed, O Messenger of Allah." He said, "Do not do so, except when you recite with Umm al-Qur'an (Surah Al-Fatiha), for there is no prayer for the one who does not recite it."

صَلَّى بِنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ الصُّبْحَ فَثَقُلَتْ عَلَيْهِ الْقِرَاءَةُ فَلَمَّا انْصَرَفَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ مِنْ صَلَاتِهِ أَقْبَلَ عَلَيْنَا بِوَجْهِهِ فَقَالَ إِنِّي لَأَرَاكُمْ تَقْرَءُونَ خَلْفَ إِمَامِكُمْ إِذَا جَهَرَ قَالَ قُلْنَا أَجَلْ وَاللهِ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ هَذَا قَالَ فَلَا تَفْعَلُوا إِلَّا بِأُمِّ الْقُرْآنِ؛ فَإِنَّهُ لَا صَلَاةَ لِمَنْ لَمْ يَقْرَأْ بِهَا

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Perhaps you will recite while the imam is reciting." He repeated this three times. They said, "Indeed, we do that." He said, "Do not do so, except that one of you recites with the opening chapter of the Book."

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَقْرَءُونَ وَالْإِمَامُ يَقْرَأُ قَالَهَا ثَلَاثًا قَالُوا إِنَّا لَنَفْعَلُ ذَاكَ قَالَ فَلَا تَفْعَلُوا إِلَّا أَنْ يَقْرَأَ أَحَدُكُمْ بِفَاتِحَةِ الْكِتَابِ

[AI] And he said, "I see you praying behind your imam when he recites aloud?" We said, "Yes, by Allah, O Messenger of Allah." He said, "Do not do so except with the Ummul Quran, for verily there is no prayer for the one who does not recite it." Ali ibn Umar said, "This is a good chain of narration."

وَقَالَ إِنِّي لَأَرَاكُمْ تَقْرَءُونَ خَلْفَ إِمَامِكُمْ إِذَا جَهَرَ؟ قُلْنَا أَجَلْ وَاللهِ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ هَذَا قَالَ فَلَا تَفْعَلُوا إِلَّا بِأُمِّ الْقُرْآنِ فَإِنَّهُ لَا صَلَاةَ لِمَنْ لَمْ يَقْرَأْ بِهَا قَالَ عَلِيُّ بْنُ عُمَرَ هَذَا إِسْنَادٌ حَسَنٌ

"أتقرءون في صلاتكم خلفَ الإمامِ والإمامُ يقرأُ؟ فلا تفعلوا، وليقرأ أحدُكم بفاتحة الكتاب في نفسه".

"أتقرءون في صلاتكم والإمام يَقْرَأُ؟ فلا تفعلوا، ليقرأ أحدكم بفاتحة الكتاب في نفسه".

"أتقرءون خلفى وأنا أقرأ؟ فلا تفعلوا ذاكم، لِيقْرأُ أحدُكُم بفاتحة الكتاب في نفسه سرًا".

"إِنِّى أَرَاكُمْ تقرءُونَ وراءَ إِمامكُم فلا تفْعلوا إِلَّا بأُمِّ القُرْآن فإنَّه لا صلاةَ لمنْ لمْ يَقْرأْ بها" .

"لَعَلَّكُمْ تَقْرَأُونَ وَالإِمَام يَقْرَأُ؟ فَلَا تَفْعَلُوا إِلَّا أنْ يَقْرَأَ أحَدُكُم بِفَاتِحَةِ الْكِتَابِ".

"هَلْ تَقْرَأُونَ خَلفِي شَيئًا مِنَ القُرآن؟ لا تَفْعَلُوا إِلا بِأُمِّ القُرآنِ سِرًّا في أَنْفُسِكُمْ".

"لا عَلَيكمْ أنْ لا تَفْعَلُوا، إِلَّا بِفَاتِحَةِ الكِتَابِ فَإِنَّهُ لا صَلاةَ إِلا بِهَا".

"عَنْ عبادة بن الصَّامت قال: صَلَّى بنا رَسُول الله ﷺ الفجر، فثقلت عليه القراءة، فلما انصرف قال: إنى أراكم تقرءون وراء إمامكم، قلنا: أجل! والله يا رسول الله هذا، قال: فلا تفعلوا إلَّا فاتحة الكتاب، فإنَّه لا صلاة لمن لم يقرأ بها".

"عَنْ أَبِي قِلَابَةَ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَائِشَةَ، عَنْ رَجُلٍ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَقْرأُونَ وَالإِمَامُ يَقْرَأُ؟ قَالُوا: إِنَّا لَنَفْعَلُ قَالَ: فَلاَ تَفْعَلُوا إِلَّا أَنْ يَقْرَأَ أَحَدُكُمْ بِفَاتِحَةِ الْكِتَابِ فِي نَفْسِهِ".
