Fatima sent somebody to Abu Bakr asking him to give her her inheritance from the Prophet ﷺ from what Allah had given to His Apostle through Fai (i.e. booty gained without fighting). She asked for the Sadaqa (i.e. wealth assigned for charitable purposes) of the Prophet ﷺ at Medina, and Fadak, and what remained of the Khumus (i.e., one-fifth) of the Khaibar booty. Abu Bakr said, "Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'We (Prophets), our property is not inherited, and whatever we leave is Sadaqa, but Muhammad's Family can eat from this property, i.e. Allah's property, but they have no right to take more than the food they need.' By Allah! I will not bring any change in dealing with the Sadaqa of the Prophet (and will keep them) as they used to be observed in his (i.e. the Prophet's) life-time, and I will dispose with it as Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to do," Then 'Ali said, "I testify that None has the right to be worshipped but Allah, and that Muhammad is His Apostle," and added, "O Abu Bakr! We acknowledge your superiority." Then he (i.e. 'Ali) mentioned their own relationship to Allah's Apostle and their right. Abu Bakr then spoke saying, "By Allah in Whose Hands my life is. I love to do good to the relatives of Allah's Apostle rather than to my own relatives"

أَنَّ فَاطِمَةَ عَلَيْهَا السَّلاَمُ أَرْسَلَتْ إِلَى أَبِي بَكْرٍ تَسْأَلُهُ مِيرَاثَهَا مِنَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فِيمَا أَفَاءَ اللَّهُ عَلَى رَسُولِهِ ﷺ تَطْلُبُ صَدَقَةَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ الَّتِي بِالْمَدِينَةِ وَفَدَكٍ وَمَا بَقِيَ مِنْ خُمُسِ خَيْبَرَ فَقَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ لاَ نُورَثُ مَا تَرَكْنَا فَهْوَ صَدَقَةٌ إِنَّمَا يَأْكُلُ آلُ مُحَمَّدٍ مِنْ هَذَا الْمَالِ يَعْنِي مَالَ اللَّهِ لَيْسَ لَهُمْ أَنْ يَزِيدُوا عَلَى الْمَأْكَلِ وَإِنِّي وَاللَّهِ لاَ أُغَيِّرُ شَيْئًا مِنْ صَدَقَاتِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ الَّتِي كَانَتْ عَلَيْهَا فِي عَهْدِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ وَلأَعْمَلَنَّ فِيهَا بِمَا عَمِلَ فِيهَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَتَشَهَّدَ عَلِيٌّ ثُمَّ قَالَ إِنَّا قَدْ عَرَفْنَا يَا أَبَا بَكْرٍ فَضِيلَتَكَ وَذَكَرَ قَرَابَتَهُمْ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَحَقَّهُمْ فَتَكَلَّمَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ فَقَالَ وَالَّذِي نَفْسِي بِيَدِهِ لَقَرَابَةُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَحَبُّ إِلَىَّ أَنْ أَصِلَ مِنْ قَرَابَتِي

Fatimah daughter of Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent a messenger to Abu Bakr demanding from him in inheritance of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ from what Allah bestowed on him at Medina and Fadak, and what remained of the fifth of Khaibar. Abu Bakr said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ has said: We are not inherited. Whatever we leave is sadaqah. The family of Muhammad will eat from this property. I swear by Allah I shall not change it from the former condition of its being sadaqah as it was in the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. I shall deal with it as the Messenger of Allah dealt with it. Abu Bakr, therefore, refused to give anything to Fatimah from it.

أَنَّ فَاطِمَةَ بِنْتَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَرْسَلَتْ إِلَى أَبِي بَكْرٍ الصِّدِّيقِ ؓ تَسْأَلُهُ مِيرَاثَهَا مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ مِمَّا أَفَاءَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ بِالْمَدِينَةِ وَفَدَكَ وَمَا بَقِيَ مِنْ خُمُسِ خَيْبَرَ فَقَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ لاَ نُورَثُ مَا تَرَكْنَا صَدَقَةٌ إِنَّمَا يَأْكُلُ آلُ مُحَمَّدٍ مِنْ هَذَا الْمَالِ وَإِنِّي وَاللَّهِ لاَ أُغَيِّرُ شَيئًا مِنْ صَدَقَةِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَنْ حَالِهَا الَّتِي كَانَتْ عَلَيْهِ فِي عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَلأَعْمَلَنَّ فِيهَا بِمَا عَمِلَ بِهِ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَأَبَى أَبُو بَكْرٍ ؓ أَنْ يَدْفَعَ إِلَى فَاطِمَةَ عَلَيْهَا السَّلاَمُ مِنْهَا شَيْئًا

Fatimah the daughter of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent word to Abu Bakr as-Siddeeq, asking for her inheritance from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, of the faiʿ that Allah had granted to him in Madinah and Fadak, and what was left of the khurnus of Khaibar, Abu Bakr said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ʿWe (Prophets) are not to be inherited from and whatever we leave behind is charity. Rather the family of Muhammad may take their provision from this wealth.ʿ By Allah, I will not change any of the charity of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ from how it was at the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and I will do the same with it as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did. So Abu Bakr refused to give anything of it to Fatimah, and Fatimah was upset with Abu Bakr because of that. Abu Bakr said; By the One in Whose hand is my soul, the relatives of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ are dearer to me than my own relatives. As for the dispute between me and you concerning this wealth, I did not deviate from the truth concerning them and I will not leave anything that I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ do but I will do it the way he did it.

أَنَّ فَاطِمَةَ بِنْتَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ أَرْسَلَتْ إِلَى أَبِي بَكْرٍ الصِّدِّيقِ تَسْأَلُهُ مِيرَاثَهَا مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ مِمَّا أَفَاءَ اللهُ عَلَيْهِ بِالْمَدِينَةِ وَفَدَكَ وَمَا بَقِيَ مِنْ خُمُسِ خَيْبَرَ فَقَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ لَا نُورَثُ مَا تَرَكْنَا صَدَقَةٌ إِنَّمَا يَأْكُلُ آلُ مُحَمَّدٍ فِي هَذَا الْمَالِ وَإِنِّي وَاللهِ لَا أُغَيِّرُ شَيْئًا مِنْ صَدَقَةِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ عَنْ حَالِهَا الَّتِي كَانَتْ عَلَيْهَافِي عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وَلَأَعْمَلَنَّ فِيهَا بِمَا عَمِلَ بِهِ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺفَأَبَى أَبُو بَكْرٍ أَنْ يَدْفَعَ إِلَى فَاطِمَةَ مِنْهَا شَيْئًا فَوَجَدَتْ فَاطِمَةُ عَلَى أَبِي بَكْرٍ فِي ذَلِكَ وقَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ وَالَّذِي نَفْسِي بِيَدِهِ لَقَرَابَةُ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ أَحَبُّ إِلَيَّ أَنْ أَصِلَ مِنْ قَرَابَتِي وَأَمَّا الَّذِي شَجَرَ بَيْنِي وَبَيْنَكُمْ مِنْ هَذِهِ الْأَمْوَالِ فَإِنِّي لَمْ آلُ فِيهَا عَنِ الْحَقِّ وَلَمْ أَتْرُكْ أَمْرًا رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَصْنَعُهُ فِيهَا إِلَّا صَنَعْتُهُ

عَنْ أَبِي بَكْرٍ الصِّدِّيقِ ؓ قَالَ كُنْتُ عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَنَزَلَتْ هَذِهِ الْآيَةُ { مَنْ يَعْمَلْ سُوءًا يُجْزَ بِهِ وَلَا يَجِدُ لَهُ مِنْ دُونِ اللَّهِ وَلِيًّا وَلَا نَصِيرًا } فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَا أَبَا بَكْرٍ أَلَا أُقْرِئُكَ آيَةً أُنْزِلَتْ عَلَيَّ ؟ قُلْتُ بَلَى يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ فَأَقْرَأَنِيهَا فَلَا أَعْلَمُ إِلَّا أَنِّي وَجَدْتُ انْقِصَامَ ظَهْرِي فَتَمَطَّأْتُ لَهَا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ مَا لَكَ يَا أَبَا بَكْرٍ ؟ قُلْتُ بِأَبِي وَأُمِّي يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ وَأَيُّنَا لَمْ يَعْمَلْ سُوءًا وَإِنَّا لَمُجَازَوْنَ بِمَا عَمِلْنَا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَمَّا أَنْتَ يَا أَبَا بَكْرٍ وَأَصْحَابُكَ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ فَتُجْزَوْنَ فِي الدُّنْيَا حَتَّى تَلْقَوْنَ اللَّهَ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى وَلَيْسَ لَكُمْ ذُنُوبٌ وَأَمَّا الْآخَرُونَ فَيُجْمَعُ ذَلِكَ لَهُمْ حَتَّى يُجْزَوْا بِهِ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ وَهَذَا الْحَدِيثُ لَا نَعْلَمُ أَنَّ أَحَدًا رَوَاهُ بِهَذَا اللَّفْظِ إِلَّا أَبُو بَكْرٍ وَلَا نَعْلَمُ لَهُ إِسْنَادًا عَنْ أَبِي بَكْرٍ إِلَّا هَذَا الْإِسْنَادَ وَمَوْلَى ابْنِ سِبَاعٍ مَجْهُولٌ وَلَا نَعْلَمُ رَوَى عَنْهُ إِلَّا مُوسَى بْنُ عُبَيْدَةَ وَمُوسَى لَمْ يَكُنْ بِهِ بَأْسٌ وَلَكِنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ حَافِظًا لِلْحَدِيثِ وَقَدْ رَوَى عَنْهُ أَهْلُ الْعِلْمِ

"عَنْ عَائشَةَ أَنَّ فَاطِمَةَ بِنْتَ رَسُولِ الله ﷺ أَرْسَلَتْ إِلَى أَبِى بَكْر تَسْأَلُهُ مِيرَاثَهَا مِنْ رَسُولِ الله ﷺ مِمَّا أَفَاءَ الله عَلَى رَسُولِهِ، وَفَاطِمَة حِينَئِذٍ تَطْلُبُ صَدَقَةَ النَّبِى ﷺ بِالْمَدِينَةِ وَفَدَكَ وَمَا بَقىَ مِن خُمُسِ خَيْبَرَ، فَقَالْ أَبو بَكْرٍ: إِنَّ رَسُولَ الله ﷺ قَالَ: لَا نُورَثُ مَا تَرَكْنَاهُ صَدَقةٌ، إِنَّمَا يَأكُلُ آلُ مُحمدٍ مِنْ هَذَا الْمَالِ - يَعْنِى مَالَ الله - لَيْسَ لَهُمْ أَنْ يَزِيدُوا عَلَى الْمَأَكَلِ، وَإِنَّى والله لَا أُغَيِّرُ صَدَقَاتِ النَّبِىِّ ﷺ عَنْ حَاِلهَا الَّتِى كَانَتْ عَلَيْهِ فِى عَهْدِ النَّبِىِّ ﷺ ، وَلأَعْمَلَنَّ فِيهَا بِمَا عَمِلَ النَّبِىُّ ﷺ فِيهَا، فَأَبَى أَبُو بَكْرٍ أَنْ يَدْفَعَ إِلَى فَاطِمَةَ مِنْهَا شَيْئًا، فَوَجَدَتْ فَاطمَةُ عَلَى أَبِى بَكْر مِنْ ذَلِكَ، فَقَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ: والَّذِى نَفْسِى بِيَدِهِ لَقَرَابَةُ رَسُولِ الله ﷺ أَحَبُّ إِلىَّ أَنْ أَصِلَ مِنْ قَرابَتِى، فَأمَّا الَّذِى شَجَرَ

بَيْنِى وَبَيْنَكُمْ مِنْ هَذِهِ الصَّدقَاتِ فَإِنِّى (لا آلو) فِيهَا عَنِ الْحَقِّ، وَإِنِّى لَمْ أَكُنْ لأَتْرُكَ فِيهَا أَمْرًا رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ الله ﷺ يَصْنَعُهُ فِيهَا إِلَّا صَنَعْتُهُ".
