2.17 Permissibility of Drinking Water from all Types of Clean Vessels Except Those of Gold and Silver

٢۔١٧ باب جواز الشرب من جميع الأواني الطاهرة غير الذهب والفضة وجواز الكرع - وهو الشرب بالفم من النهر وغيره- بغير إناء ولا يد وتحريم استعمال إناء الذهب والفضة في الشرب والأكل والطهارة وسائر وجوه الاستعمال

(773) bukhari:195ʿAbdullāh b. Munīr > ʿAbdullāh b. Bakr > Ḥumayd > Anas

It was the time for prayer, and those whose houses were near got up and went to their people (to perform ablution), and there remained some people (sitting). Then a painted stove pot (Mikhdab) containing water was brought to Messenger of Allah ﷺs The pot was small, not broad enough for one to spread one's hand in; yet all the people performed ablution. (The sub narrator said, "We asked Anas, 'How many persons were you?' Anas replied 'We were eighty or more"). (It was one of the miracles of Messenger of Allah ﷺ).  

(٧٧٣) البخاري:١٩٥حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُنِيرٍ سَمِعَ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ بَكْرٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا حُمَيْدٌ عَنْ أَنَسٍ قَالَ

حَضَرَتِ الصَّلاَةُ فَقَامَ مَنْ كَانَ قَرِيبَ الدَّارِ إِلَى أَهْلِهِ وَبَقِيَ قَوْمٌ فَأُتِيَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ بِمِخْضَبٍ مِنْ حِجَارَةٍ فِيهِ مَاءٌ فَصَغُرَ الْمِخْضَبُ أَنْ يَبْسُطَ فِيهِ كَفَّهُ فَتَوَضَّأَ الْقَوْمُ كُلُّهُمْ قُلْنَا كَمْ كُنْتُمْ قَالَ ثَمَانِينَ وَزِيَادَةً  

(773) bukhari:200Musaddad > Ḥammād > Thābit > Anas

Anas said, "The Prophet ﷺ asked for water and a tumbler with a broad base and no so deep, containing a small quantity of water, was brought to him whereby he put his fingers in it." Anas further said, ' noticed the water springing out from amongst his fingers." Anas added, ' estimated that the people who performed ablution with it numbered between seventy to eighty."  

(٧٧٣) البخاري:٢٠٠حَدَّثَنَا مُسَدَّدٌ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادٌ عَنْ ثَابِتٍ عَنْ أَنَسٍ

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ دَعَا بِإِنَاءٍ مِنْ مَاءٍ فَأُتِيَ بِقَدَحٍ رَحْرَاحٍ فِيهِ شَىْءٌ مِنْ مَاءٍ فَوَضَعَ أَصَابِعَهُ فِيهِ قَالَ أَنَسٌ فَجَعَلْتُ أَنْظُرُ إِلَى الْمَاءِ يَنْبُعُ مِنْ بَيْنِ أَصَابِعِهِ قَالَ أَنَسٌ فَحَزَرْتُ مَنْ تَوَضَّأَ مَا بَيْنَ السَّبْعِينَ إِلَى الثَّمَانِينَ  

(774) ibnmajah:471Abū Bakr b. Abū Shaybah > Aḥmad b. ʿAbdullāh > ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. al-Mājishūn > ʿAmr b. Yaḥyá from his father

"The Messenger of Allah came to us, and we brought water out to him in a vessel of brass, and he performed ablution with it."  

(٧٧٤) ابن ماجة:٤٧١حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنْ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ بْنِ الْمَاجِشُونِ حَدَّثَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَبِيهِ

عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ زَيْدٍ صَاحِبِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ أَتَانَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَأَخْرَجْنَا لَهُ مَاءً فِي تَوْرٍ مِنْ صُفْرٍ فَتَوَضَّأَ بِهِ  

(775) abudawud:3724ʿUthmān b. Abū Shaybah > Yūnus b. Muḥammad > Fulayḥ > Saʿīd b. al-Ḥārith > Jābir b. ʿAbdullāh

The Prophet ﷺ went to visit a man of the Ansar accompanied by one of his Companions who was watering his garden. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: If you have any water which has remained over night in a skin (we should like it), or shall sip (from a streamlet).  

(٧٧٥) أبو داود:٣٧٢٤حَدَّثَنَا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ حَدَّثَنَا يُونُسُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ حَدَّثَنِي فُلَيْحٌ عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ قَالَ

دَخَلَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ وَرَجُلٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِهِ عَلَى رَجُلٍ مِنَ الأَنْصَارِ وَهُوَ يُحَوِّلُ الْمَاءَ فِي حَائِطِهِ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِنْ كَانَ عِنْدَكَ مَاءٌ بَاتَ هَذِهِ اللَّيْلَةَ فِي شَنٍّ وَإِلاَّ كَرَعْنَا قَالَ بَلْ عِنْدِي مَاءٌ بَاتَ فِي شَنٍّ  

(776) bukhari:5632Ḥafṣ b. ʿUmar > Shuʿbah > al-Ḥakam > Ibn Abū Laylá

While Hudhaita was at Mada'in, he asked for water. The chief of the village brought him a silver vessel. Hudhaifa threw it away and said, "I have thrown it away because I told him not to use it, but he has not stopped using it. The Prophet ﷺ forbade us to wear clothes of silk or Dibaj, and to drink in gold or silver utensils, and said, 'These things are for them (unbelievers) in this world and for you (Muslims) in the Hereafter.' "  

(٧٧٦) البخاري:٥٦٣٢حَدَّثَنَا حَفْصُ بْنُ عُمَرَ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ عَنِ الْحَكَمِ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي لَيْلَى قَالَ

كَانَ حُذَيْفَةُ بِالْمَدَايِنِ فَاسْتَسْقَى فَأَتَاهُ دِهْقَانٌ بِقَدَحِ فِضَّةٍ فَرَمَاهُ بِهِ فَقَالَ إِنِّي لَمْ أَرْمِهِ إِلاَّ أَنِّي نَهَيْتُهُ فَلَمْ يَنْتَهِ وَإِنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ نَهَانَا عَنِ الْحَرِيرِ وَالدِّيبَاجِ وَالشُّرْبِ فِي آنِيَةِ الذَّهَبِ وَالْفِضَّةِ وَقَالَ هُنَّ لَهُمْ فِي الدُّنْيَا وَهْىَ لَكُمْ فِي الآخِرَةِ  

(776) bukhari:5633Muḥammad b. al-Muthanná > Ibn Abū ʿAdī > Ibn ʿAwn > Mujāhid > Ibn Abū Laylá

The Prophet ﷺ said, "Do not drink in gold or silver utensils, and do not wear clothes of silk or Dibaj, for these things are for them (unbelievers) in this world and for you in the Hereafter."  

(٧٧٦) البخاري:٥٦٣٣حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي عَدِيٍّ عَنِ ابْنِ عَوْنٍ عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي لَيْلَى قَالَ

خَرَجْنَا مَعَ حُذَيْفَةَ وَذَكَرَ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ قَالَ لاَ تَشْرَبُوا فِي آنِيَةِ الذَّهَبِ وَالْفِضَّةِ وَلاَ تَلْبَسُوا الْحَرِيرَ وَالدِّيبَاجَ فَإِنَّهَا لَهُمْ فِي الدُّنْيَا وَلَكُمْ فِي الآخِرَةِ  

(777) muslim:2065cZayd b. Yazīd Abū Maʿn al-Raqāshī > Abū ʿĀṣim > ʿUthmān / Ibn Murrah > ʿAbdullāh b. ʿAbd al-Raḥman > Khālatih Um Salamah

He who drank in vessels of gold or silver he in fact drank down in his belly the fire of Hell.  

(٧٧٧) مسلم:٢٠٦٥cوَحَدَّثَنِي زَيْدُ بْنُ يَزِيدَ أَبُو مَعْنٍ الرَّقَاشِيُّ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَاصِمٍ عَنْ عُثْمَانَ يَعْنِي ابْنَ مُرَّةَ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ عَنْ خَالَتِهِ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ قَالَتْ

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ مَنْ شَرِبَ فِي إِنَاءٍ مِنْ ذَهَبٍ أَوْ فِضَّةٍ فَإِنَّمَا يُجَرْجِرُ فِي بَطْنِهِ نَارًا مِنْ جَهَنَّمَ
