0.06. Taqwá (Fear of God and God-Consciousness)

Allah ﷻ says, "O you who have believed, fear Allah as He should be feared" (Āl ʿImrān 3:102). And, "So fear Allah as much as you are able " (Thaghābun 64:16) and this clear āyah is the intention of the first one. And Allah ﷻ says, "O you who have believed, fear Allah and speak words of appropriate justice." (Aḥzāb 33:70), and the āyāt regarding taqwá are well-known and numerous. And Allah ﷻ says, "And whoever fears Allah - He will make for him a way out; And will provide for him from where he does not expect." (Ṭalāq 65:2–3), and says, "O you who have believed, if you fear Allah, He will grant you a criterion and will remove from you your misdeeds and forgive you. And Allah is the possessor of great bounty." (Anfāl 8:29). The āyāt on this topic are numerous and well-known.

The most honorable people are the ones who are most God-conscious and God-fearing

(69) bukhari:3353ʿAlī b. ʿAbdullāh > Yaḥyá b. Saʿīd > ʿUbaydullāh > Saʿīd b. Abū Saʿīd from his father from my father > Abū Hurayrah

The people said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Who is the most honorable amongst the people (in Allah's Sight)?" He said, "The most righteous amongst them." They said, "We do not ask you, about this. " He said, "Then Joseph, Allah's Prophet, the son of Allah's Prophet, The son of Allah's Prophet the son of Allah's Khalil (i.e. Abraham)." They said, "We do not want to ask about this," He said, "Then you want to ask about the descent of the Arabs. Those who were the best in the pre-Islamic period of ignorance will be the best in Islam provided they comprehend the religious knowledge."

Protect yourself from the trial of allurement of women

(70) muslim:2742Muḥammad b. al-Muthanná And Muḥammad b. Bashhār > Muḥammad b. Jaʿfar > Shuʿbah > Abū Maslamah > Abū Naḍrah > Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī

The world is sweet and green (alluring) and Allah has placed you all as successors on it in order to see how you act. So, protect yourself from ˹alluring deceptions˺ in this world and protect yourself from ˹the temptations˺ of women: in fact, the first trial for the people of Isrāʾīl was because of women.

And in the hadith transmitted on the authority of Ibn Bashshar the words are:" So that He should see how you act."

Duʿāʾ for piety, taqwá, chastity, and sufficiency

(71) muslim:2721aMuḥammad b. al-Muthanná And Muḥammad b. Bashhār > Muḥammad b. Jaʿfar > Shuʿbah > Abū Isḥāq > Abū al-Aḥwaṣ > ʿAbdullāh ˹b. Masʿūd˺

from the Prophet ﷺ that he used to say, "allāhumma innī as'aluka al-hudá wa-al-tuqá wa-al-ʿafāfa wa-al-ghiná (O Allah, I ask You for guidance, tuqá (piety), chastity, and sufficiency."

Chose to do what is more righteous even after an oath

(72) muslim:1651aQutaybah b. Saʿīd > Jarīr > ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz / Ibn Rufayʿ > Tamīm b. Ṭarafah

A beggar came to ʿAdī b. Hatim and he begged him to give him the price of a servant, or the approximate price of the slave. He said: I have nothing to give you except my coat of mail and my helmet. I will, however, write to my family to give that to you, but he did not agree to that. Thereupon ʿAdī became upset and said: By Allah, I will not give you anything. The person ˹then˺ agreed.

Whereupon he said: By Allah, had I not heard Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying:" He who took an oath, but then found something more pious in the sight of Allah, he should ˹break the oath˺ and do that which is more pious," I would not have broken the oath.

This Prophet's council on the path to Jannah starts with Taqwá

(73) tirmidhi:616Mūsá b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Kindī al-Kūfī > Zayd b. al-Ḥubāb > Muʿawiyah b. Ṣāliḥ > Sulaym b. ʿĀmir > Abū Umāmah

I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ giving a Khutbah during the Farewell Hajj, and he said: 'Have taqwá of your Lord, and pray your five ˹prayers˺, and fast your month ˹of Ramaḍān˺, and pay the Zakāh on your wealth, and obey those who are in charge of you, and ˹thus˺ you will enter the Paradise of your Lord.'"

He said: "I said to Abu Umamah: 'How old were you when you heard this Hadith (from the Messenger of Allah)?' He said: 'I heard it when I was thirty years old.'" Abū ʿĪsá said that this Ḥadīth is Ḥasan-Ṣaḥīḥ.
