nasai-kubra:9549 – Isḥāq b. Ibrāhīm > Jarīr > Sulaymān al-Taymī > Abū ʿUthmān al-Nahdī

While we were with 'Utba b. Farqad there came a letter of 'Umar (containing the instructions) that Messenger of Allah ﷺ had said: None should wear silk (with the exception of so much) but he will have nothing of it in the Hereafter. Abu 'Uthman said: To the extent of two fingers which are close to the thumb, and I was shown the (silk) borders of the Tayalisa mantle (which were about two fingers in breadth and I saw them. الكبرى للنسائي:٩٥٤٩ – أَخْبَرَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنَا جَرِيرٌ عَنْ سُلَيْمَانَ التَّيْمِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عُثْمَانَ النَّهْدِيِّ قَالَ كُنَّا مَعَ عُتْبَةَ بْنِ يَزِيدَ فَجَاءَ كِتَابُ عُمَرَ

"We were with 'Utbah bin Farqad when the letter of 'Umar came, saying that the Messenger of Allah [SAW] said: 'No one wears silk except one who has no share of it in the Hereafter, except this much.'" And Abu 'Uthman gestured with the two fingers that are next to the thumb. And I saw the two of them pointing to the borders of the Tayalisah, so that I could see the Tayalisah.

ahmad:243 – Yaḥyá b. Saʿīd > al-Taymī

We were with ʿUtbah bin Farqad and ʿUmar ؓ wrote to him about things he narrated from the Prophet ﷺ. Among the things he wrote was that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ʿNo one wears silk in this world except one who will not wear it in the Hereafter, except this much,ʿ and he gestured with his two fingers, the forefinger and the middle finger. Abu ʿUthman said: I thought this referred to the edging of the tayalisah (a shawl-like garment) when we first saw the tayalisah.
