"A woman who did tattoos was brought to 'Umar and he said: 'I adjure you by Allah, did any one among you hear (anything from) the Messenger of Allah [SAW]?' Abu Hurairah said: "I stood up and said: 'O Commander of the Believers! I heard him (say something).' He said: 'What did you hear?' I said: 'I heard him say: Do not do tattoos and do not have tattoos done.'" (Using translation from Nasāʾī 5106)

سَمِعَ أَحَدٌ مِنْكُمْ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ؟» قَالَ أَبُو هُرَيْرَةَ فَقُلْتُ يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ أَنَا سَمِعْتُهُ قَالَ «فَمَا سَمِعْتَهُ؟» فَقُلْتُ «سَمِعْتُهُ» يَقُولُ «لَا تَشِمْنَ وَلَا تَسْتَوْشِمْنَ»

A woman who used to practise tattooing was brought to ʿUmar. ʿUmar got up and said, "I beseech you by Allah, which of you heard the Prophet ﷺ saying something about tattooing?" l got up and said, "0 chief of the Believers! l heard something." He said, "What did you hear?" I said, "I heard the Prophet (addressing the ladies), saying, 'Do not practise tattooing and do not get yourselves tattooed.'"
