He who amongst you has food for two persons should take three (guests with him). and he who has with him food for four persons should take five or six (guests with him for entertaining them). It was (in accordance with these instructions of the Holy Prophet) that Abu Bakr brought three persons, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ brought ten persons (as guests to their respective houses). Abu Bakr had brought three persons (he himself, and myself), my father and my mother (along with therm). He (the narrator) said: I do not know whether he also said: My wife and one servant who was common between our house and that of Abu Bakr. Abu Bakr had had his evening meal with Allah's Apostle ﷺ. He stayed here until night prayer had been offered. He then came back (to the house of Allah's Apostle) and stayed there until Messenger of Allah ﷺ felt drowsy and (Abu Bakr) then came (back to his own house) when (a considerable) part of the night had been over, as Allah had desired. His wife said to him: What held you back from your guests? He said: Oh! have you not served them the evening meal (by this time)? She said: It was in fact served to them. but they refused to eat until you came. He ('Abd al-Rahman) said: I slunk away and bid myself. He (Abu Bakr) said: O, you stupid fellow, and he reprimanded me, and said to the guests: Eat, though it may not be pleasant now. He said: By Allah. I will never eat it He ('Abd al-Rahman) said: By Allah. we did not take a morsel when from beneath that (there appeared) more until they had eaten to their fill, and lo! it was more than what it was before. Abu Bakr saw that and found that it was so or more than that. He said to his wife: Sister of Band Firis, what is th-is? She said: By the coolness of my eyes. it is in excess by three times over the previous one. Then Abu Bakr ate saying: That was from the Satan (viz. his vow for not eating the food). He then took a morsel out of that and then took it (the rest) to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and it was kept there until morning, and during (those days) there was a covenant between us and some other people, and the period of covenant was over, and we had appointed twelve officials with every person amongst them. It is Allah only Who knows as to how many people were there with each of them. He sent (this food to them) and all of them ate out of it.

ʿAbdur Rahman bin Abi Bakr said, "The Suffa Companions were poor people and the Prophet ﷺ said, 'Whoever has food for two persons should take a third one from them (Suffa companions). And whosoever has food for four persons he should take one or two from them' Abu Bakr took three men and the Prophet ﷺ took ten of them." ʿAbdur Rahman added, my father my mother and I were there (in the house). (The sub-narrator is in doubt whether ʿAbdur Rahman also said, 'My wife and our servant who was common for both my house and Abu Bakr's house). Abu Bakr took his supper with the Prophet ﷺ and remained there till the ʿIsha' prayer was offered. Abu Bakr went back and stayed with the Prophet ﷺ till the Prophet ﷺ took his meal and then Abu Bakr returned to his house after a long portion of the night had passed. Abu Bakr's wife said, 'What detained you from your guests (or guest)?' He said, 'Have you not served them yet?' She said, 'They refused to eat until you come. The food was served for them but they refused." ʿAbdur Rahman added, "I went away and hid myself (being afraid of Abu Bakr) and in the meantime he (Abu Bakr) called me, 'O Ghunthar (a harsh word)!' and also called me bad names and abused me and then said (to his family), 'Eat. No welcome for you.' Then (the supper was served). Abu Bakr took an oath that he would not eat that food. The narrator added: By Allah, whenever any one of us (myself and the guests of Suffa companions) took anything from the food, it increased from underneath. We all ate to our fill and the food was more than it was before its serving. Abu Bakr looked at it (the food) and found it as it was before serving or even more than that. He addressed his wife (saying) 'O the sister of Bani Firas! What is this?' She said, 'O the pleasure of my eyes! The food is now three times more than it was before.' Abu Bakr ate from it, and said, 'That (oath) was from Satan' meaning his oath (not to eat). Then he again took a morsel (mouthful) from it and then took the rest of it to the Prophet. So that meal was with the Prophet. There was a treaty between us and some people, and when the period of that treaty had elapsed the Prophet ﷺ divided us into twelve (groups) (the Prophet's companions) each being headed by a man. Allah knows how many men were under the command of each (leader). So all of them (12 groups of men) ate of that meal."

The companions of Suffa were poor people. The Prophet ﷺ once said, "Whoever has food enough for two persons, should take a third one (from among them), and whoever has food enough for four persons, should take a fifth or a sixth (or said something similar)." Abu Bakr brought three persons while the Prophet ﷺ took ten. And Abu Bakr with his three family member (who were I, my father and my mother) (the sub-narrator is in doubt whether ʿAbdur-Rahman said, "My wife and my servant who was common for both my house and Abu Bakr's house.") Abu Bakr took his supper with the Prophet ﷺ and stayed there till he offered the ʿIsha' prayers. He returned and stayed till Messenger of Allah ﷺ took his supper. After a part of the night had passed, he returned to his house. His wife said to him, "What has detained you from your guests?" He said, "Have you served supper to them?" She said, "They refused to take supper until you come. They (i.e. some members of the household) presented the meal to them but they refused (to eat)" I went to hide myself and he said, "O Ghunthar!" He invoked Allah to cause my ears to be cut and he rebuked me. He then said (to them): Please eat!" and added, I will never eat the meal." By Allah, whenever we took a handful of the meal, the meal grew from underneath more than that handful till everybody ate to his satisfaction; yet the remaining food was more than the original meal. Abu Bakr saw that the food was as much or more than the original amount. He called his wife, "O sister of Bani Firas!" She said, "O pleasure of my eyes. The food has been tripled in quantity." Abu Bakr then started eating thereof and said, "It (i.e. my oath not to eat) was because of Sa all." He took a handful from it, and carried the rest to the Prophet. So that food was with the Prophet ﷺ . There was a treaty between us and some people, and when the period of that treaty had elapsed, he divided US into twelve groups, each being headed by a man. Allah knows how many men were under the command of each leader. Anyhow, the Prophet ﷺ surely sent a leader with each group. Then all of them ate of that meal.

bukhari:5807Ibrāhīm b. Mūsá > Hishām > Maʿmar > al-Zuhrī > ʿUrwah > ʿĀʾishah > Hājar > al-Ḥabashah Nās from al-Muslimīn And Tajahhaz Abū Bakr Muhājir

Some Muslim men emigrated to Ethiopia whereupon Abu Bakr also prepared himself for the emigration, but the Prophet ﷺ said (to him), "Wait, for I hope that Allah will allow me also to emigrate." Abu Bakr said, "Let my father and mother be sacrificed for you. Do you hope that (emigration)?" The Prophet said, 'Yes." So Abu Bakr waited to accompany the Prophet ﷺ and fed two she-camels he had on the leaves of As-Samur tree regularly for four months One day while we were sitting in our house at midday, someone said to Abu Bakr, "Here is Messenger of Allah ﷺ, coming with his head and a part of his face covered with a cloth-covering at an hour he never used to come to us." Abu Bakr said, "Let my father and mother be sacrificed for you, (O Prophet)! An urgent matter must have brought you here at this hour." The Prophet ﷺ came and asked the permission to enter, and he was allowed. The Prophet ﷺ entered and said to Abu Bakr, "Let those who are with you, go out." Abu Bakr replied, "(There is no stranger); they are your family. Let my father be sacrificed for you, O Allah's Apostle!" The Prophet ﷺ said, "I have been allowed to leave (Mecca)." Abu Bakr said, " I shall accompany you, O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, Let my father be sacrificed for you!" The Prophet ﷺ said, "Yes," Abu Bakr said, 'O Messenger of Allah ﷺs! Let my father be sacrificed for you. Take one of these two shecamels of mine" The Prophet ﷺ said. I will take it only after paying its price." So we prepared their baggage and put their journey food In a leather bag. And Asma' bint Abu Bakr cut a piece of her girdle and tied the mouth of the leather bag with it. That is why she was called Dhatan- Nitaqaln. Then the Prophet ﷺ and Abu Bakr went to a cave in a mountain called Thour and remained there for three nights. ʿAbdullah bin Abu Bakr. who was a young intelligent man. used to stay with them at night and leave before dawn so that in the morning, he would he with the Quraish at Mecca as if he had spent the night among them. If he heard of any plot contrived by the Quraish against the Prophet and Abu Bakr, he would understand it and (return to) inform them of it when it became dark. 'Amir bin Fuhaira, the freed slave of Abu Bakr used to graze a flock of milch sheep for them and he used to take those sheep to them when an hour had passed after the ʿIsha prayer. They would sleep soundly till 'Amir bin Fuhaira awakened them when it was still dark. He used to do that in each of those three nights.

(Using translation from Muslim 2057a)

[AI] I said to him, "Have you ever seen Quraish suffer from any harm inflicted by the Messenger of Allah in what he openly displayed of enmity towards them?" He replied, "I was present with them on a day when their nobles gathered together in the Hijr. They mentioned the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, 'We have never seen anyone endure what we have endured from this man. He has ridiculed our dreams, insulted our fathers, cursed our religion, divided our community, and slandered our gods. We have shown great patience in dealing with him on a tremendous matter, or as they say.' He ﷺ appeared before them while they were in this state. He walked until he reached the corner and then passed by them in front of the Ka'bah. When he passed by them, they made gestures mocking him and he noticed that in their faces. Then he passed by them a second time and they made the same gestures, and he noticed that in their faces. Then he passed by them a third time and they made the same gestures, and then he said, 'Listen, O people of Quraish! By the One in whose hand is Muhammad's soul, I have brought you Slaughter (for the idols)!' The people kept silent and not a man among them moved, as if there were birds perched on their heads, until the strongest among them gets hold of himself and voices the noblest of what he thinks of. So he said, 'Leave, O Abu Al-Qasim, depart freely, for by Allah, you were not ignorant.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then left until it was the following day. They gathered together in the Hijr and I was with them. Some of them said to the others, 'You have mentioned what you have heard from him and what you have learned about him, until he has started saying what you dislike. You abandoned him.' While they were in this state, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ appeared before them and they rushed towards him like a group of men surrounding him and saying, 'Are you the one who said such and such?' They mentioned to him what they had heard from him regarding the faults of their idols and religion. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Yes, I am the one who said that.' Then a man among them took hold of his garment and said, 'And Abu Bakr As-Siddiq was standing beside him, saying while he was weeping, 'Would you kill a man just because he says, My Lord is Allah?' Then they left him. Verily, this was the most intense thing I have ever seen Quraish reach from him."

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stayed in Makkah for ten years, following the people in their homes in 'Ukaz and Majinah, and during the seasons in Mina. He would say, "Who will shelter and support me? Who will assist me until I deliver the message of my Lord, and he will be rewarded with Paradise?" So much so that a man would come from Yemen or Egypt, and his people would warn him, saying, "Beware of the young boy from Quraysh who will deceive you." But he would walk among them and they would point at him with their fingers. Until Allah sent someone from Yathrib (Medina) and we offered him shelter and believed in him. The man would return to his people, and they would embrace Islam because of him, to the point that there was not a house in Al-Ansar (the supporters) except there were some Muslims living in it. Then, they all came together and said, "Until when shall we leave the Messenger of Allah ﷺ being expelled in the mountains of Makkah and living in fear?" Seventy men of us left until we reached him in the season. We made an appointment with the tribes of Al-'Aqabah, and met him there, a group of men and a group of women. We said, "O Messenger of Allah! Why don't we give you our pledge?" He replied, "Give me your pledge based on hearing and obeying, in ease and hardship, in wealth and poverty, and to enjoin good and forbid evil. And that you will say in Allah's cause, fear no blame from anyone, and to help me rather than hinder me when I come to you. If you fulfill this, then it will be better for you before Allah." We said, "O Messenger of Allah! Rain on us your guidance." We swear by Allah, we will never abandon this pledge nor take it away. So we gave him our pledge, and he grasped the hand of As'ad bin Zurarah, who was one of the youngest among us, and said, "O people of Yathrib! We have not aimed against and attacked the backs of camels unless we knew that he is the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . And indeed his leaving today means the tribal fragmentation of the entire Arabs and the killing of your best people. And the swords will bite you, whether you are a people who can endure that or a people who fear from yourselves a decline, clarify it, and it will be more excuse for you before Allah." We said, "Remove from us, O As'ad!" By Allah! We will never abandon this pledge nor seize it away. So we gave him our pledge, and he made a condition and gave us Paradise in return.

[AI] Abu Dharr was on his deathbed while wearing a simple garment. His wife cried, and he asked her why she was crying. She said, "I cry because I have no life without you, and I have no shroud that will fit you as a burial cloth." He comforted her, saying, "Do not cry, for I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say one day when I was with him, 'A man will die among you with just a piece of land as his witness, accompanied by a group of believers.' He continued, 'Everyone who was with me in that gathering has passed away, divided into different groups, and I am the only one left. I am going to die in this piece of land. Watch the road, for you will witness what I say. I swear by Allah, I have not lied or will ever lie.' She asked, 'How is that possible when the journey has been cut off?' He said, 'Watch the road.' While they were talking, a group of people approached, dragging their garments behind them as if they were flags. They asked, 'What is wrong with you?' She replied, 'There is a Muslim man who needs to be shrouded and buried, and whoever does so will be rewarded.' They asked, 'Who is he?' She said, 'Abu Dharr.' They paid the ransom with their fathers and mothers and put their belts on her back so she could find them. Abu Dharr said, 'Rejoice, for you are the people that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ spoke about. Rejoice, for I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'No two Muslim women lose two of their children or three and then seek reward and patience, except they will never see Hell.' Today, I have reached the place where you can see, and if I had a garment that would fit me, I would not be shrouded but in that. I swear by Allah, let no man among you shroud me, whether he be a prince, a servant, or a soldier.' No one in the gathering received anything except a young man from the Ansar who was with the group. He said, 'I am your companion. I have two garments from my mother's dowry spin and I have these two garments on me.' Abu Dharr said, 'You are my companion. Shroud me with them.'"

She said, "As I was doing this, I saw a group of men on their camels, which made it look like they were ants. They approached until they stood in front of me and said, "What is wrong with you, servant of Allah?" I said to them, "A Muslim man is dying and you are not burying him?" They asked, "Who is he?" I did not suffer any loss from what you mentioned, so I will shroud you in my cloak and the two garments that my mother wove for me.' The Ansaris shrouded him, including Hujr ibn Adi and Malik ibn al-Ashhtar, in the presence of all who witnessed his death, all of whom were Yemenis."

[AI] When Aba Dhar was approaching death, I cried. He asked me, "What makes you cry?" I said, "Why shouldn't I cry when you are about to die on a patch of land? I don't have a shroud big enough to cover you, nor do I have hands to bury you." He said, "Rejoice and do not cry, for I have heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'No two Muslim parents lose two children or more and show patience and seek reward, except that they will see Paradise forever.' And I have heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say to a group of people that I am among them, 'One of you will die on a patch of land witnessed by a group of believers.' None of those people left except that they died in a village and community, except for me. By Allah, I am not lying. So, look for the way." I said, "How can I find the way when the pilgrims have already left and the roads are cut off?" He said, "Go and look for it." So, I sought it with great difficulty until I reached a sandy area, then I returned and made him sick. While he was in that condition, suddenly I saw men on their camels as if they were specks of sand in the wind. I said, "Hurry up and come to me!" When they stood in front of me, they said, "O servant of Allah, what is wrong with you?" I said, "A Muslim man has died, so won't you shroud him?" They asked, "Who is he?" I said, "Abu Dhar." They said, "The companion of the Messenger of Allah?" I said, "Yes." So, they sacrificed their fathers and mothers for him and hurried towards him until they entered upon him. He said to them, "Rejoice, for I have heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say to a group of people that I am among them, 'One of you will die on a patch of land witnessed by a group of believers.' None of those people died except in a group." I swear by Allah that I did not lie and he did not lie. If I had a shroud that would fit either me or my wife, I would not have shrouded him except in that shroud. I implore you by Allah that no one among you, whether a leader, a dignitary, a messenger, or a captain, shrouds me. None of those people died except that they committed some of what he (the Prophet) mentioned, except for one young boy from the Ansar. He said, "I will shroud you, O uncle. I will shroud you in my garment and in two robes from my mother's yarn." He said, "You, then shroud me." So, the Ansari among the group who were present and stood over him shrouded him and buried him in a group, all of whom were from Yemen.
