16. The Book of Marriage
The wife of Rifaʿa Al-Qurazi came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "I was Rifaʿa's wife, but he divorced me and it was a final irrevocable divorce. Then I married ʿAbdur-Rahman bin Az-Zubair but he is impotent." The Prophet ﷺ asked her 'Do you want to remarry Rifaʿa? You cannot unless you had a complete sexual relation with your present husband." Abu Bakr was sitting with Messenger of Allah ﷺ and Khalid bin Saʿid bin Al-ʿAs was at the door waiting to be admitted. He said, "O Abu Bakr! Do you hear what this (woman) is revealing frankly before the Prophet ﷺ ?"
A man divorced his wife thrice (by expressing his decision to divorce her thrice), then she married another man who also divorced her. The Prophet ﷺ was asked if she could legally marry the first husband (or not). The Prophet ﷺ replied, "No, she cannot marry the first husband unless the second husband consummates his marriage with her, just as the first husband had done."
