13. The Book of Fasting (2/2)

13.25 The Saying of Allah Most High: "... And as for those who can fast with difficulty, they have) a choice either to fast or) to feed a Miskin (poor person) (for every day)" is Abrogated by His saying: "... So whoever of you sights (the crescent on the first night of) the month (of Ramadan i.e. is present at his home), he must observe Sawm (fasts) that month"...

When the Divine Revelation: "For those who can fast, they had a choice either fast, or feed a poor for every day," (2.184) was revealed, it was permissible for one to give a ransom and give up fasting, till the Verse succeeding it was revealed and abrogated it.

"Fasts from Ramadan would be due from me, but I would not be able to make them up except in Shaban."

Yahya said: The preoccupation was because of the Prophet ﷺ, or with the Prophet ﷺ.

A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, “O Messenger of Allah, my mother died while she had a month of fasting due upon her. Should I make it up on her behalf?” He said: “Yes.” He said: “The debt owed to Allah has more right to be fulfilled.”

Sulaiman said: Al-Hakam and Salamah said—while all of us were sitting when Muslim narrated this hadith—“We heard Mujahid mention this from Ibn Abbas ᴿᴬ.” And it is mentioned from Abu Khalid: Al-Amash narrated to us, from Al-Hakam, Muslim al-Batin, and Salamah ibn Kuhayl, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr, Ata, and Mujahid, from Ibn Abbas ᴿᴬ: A woman said to the Prophet ﷺ, “My sister died.” Yahya and Abu Muawiyah said: Al-Amash narrated to us, from Muslim, from Sa'id, from Ibn Abbas ᴿᴬ: A woman said to the Prophet ﷺ, “My mother died.” Ubaydullah said, from Zayd ibn Abi Unaysah, from Al-Hakam, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn Abbas ᴿᴬ: A woman said to the Prophet ﷺ, “My mother died while she had a vowed fast due upon her.” Abu Hariz said: Ikrimah narrated to us, from Ibn Abbas ᴿᴬ: A woman said to the Prophet ﷺ, “My mother died while she had fifteen days of fasting due upon her.”

Reward for fasting is up to Allah for the servant restrains himself from his bodily desires

(706) bukhari:1894ʿAbdullāh b. Maslamah > Mālik > Abū al-Zinād > al-Aʿraj > Abū Hurayrah

Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Fasting is a shield (or a screen or a shelter). So, the person observing fasting should avoid sexual relation with his wife and should not behave foolishly and impudently, and if somebody fights with him or abuses him, he should tell him twice, 'I am fasting."

The Prophet ﷺ added, "By Him in Whose Hands my soul is, the smell coming out from the mouth of a fasting person is better in the sight of Allah than the smell of musk. (Allah says about the fasting person), 'He has left his food, drink and desires for My sake. The fast is for Me. So I will reward (the fasting person) for it and the reward of good deeds is multiplied ten times."

(1881) bukhari:6477Ibrāhīm b. Ḥamzah > Ibn Abū Ḥāzim > Yazīd > Muḥammad b. Ibrāhīm > ʿĪsá b. Ṭalḥah al-Taymī > Abū Hurayrah

Reward for fasting is up to Allah and its several other virtues

(707) bukhari:1904Ibrāhīm b. Mūsá > Hishām b. Yūsuf > Ibn Jurayj > ʿAṭāʾ > Abū Ṣāliḥ al-Zayyāt > Abū Hurayrah

the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Allah said, 'All the deeds of Adam's sons (people) are for them, except fasting which is for Me, and I will give the reward for it.'

"Fasting is a shield (protection from the Hellfire and from committing sins). If one of you is fasting, he should avoid sexual relation with his wife and quarreling, and if somebody should fight or quarrel with him, he should say: I am fasting."

"By Him in Whose Hands my soul is, the unpleasant smell coming out from the mouth of a fasting person is better in the sight of Allah than the smell of musk."

"There are two pleasures for the fasting person, one at the time of breaking his fast, and the other at the time when he will meet his Lord; then he will be pleased because of his fasting."

al-Rayyan: the entrance gate of Jannah exclusively for those who fast

(708) bukhari:1896Khālid b. Makhlad > Sulaymān b. Bilāl > Abū Ḥāzim > Sahl

The Prophet ﷺ said, "There is a gate in Paradise called Ar-Raiyan, and those who observe fasts will enter through it on the Day of Resurrection and none except them will enter through it. It will be said, 'Where are those who used to observe fasts?' They will get up, and none except them will enter through it. After their entry the gate will be closed and nobody will enter through it."

One who fasts a single day is distanced from Hellfires at a distance of seventy years

(709) bukhari:2840Isḥāq b. Naṣr > ʿAbd al-Razzāq > Ibn Jurayj > Yaḥyá b. Saʿīd And Suhayl b. Abū Ṣāliḥ > al-Nuʿmān b. Abū ʿAyyāsh > Abū Saʿīd

I heard the Prophet ﷺ saying, "Indeed, anyone who fasts for one day for Allah's Pleasure, Allah will keep his face away from the (Hell) fire for (a distance covered by a journey of) seventy years."

Accidentally eating or drinking does not break one's fast

(710) bukhari:1933ʿAbdān > Yazīd b. Zurayʿ > Hishām > Ibn Sīrīn > Abū Hurayrah

The Prophet ﷺ said, "If somebody eats or drinks forgetfully then he should complete his fast, for what he has eaten or drunk, has been given to him by Allah."

(711) bukhari:1969ʿAbdullāh b. Yūsuf > Mālik > Abū al-Naḍr > Abū Salamah > ʿĀʾishah

Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to fast till one would say that he would never stop fasting, and he would abandon fasting till one would say that he would never fast. I never saw Messenger of Allah ﷺ fasting for a whole month except the month of Ramadan, and did not see him fasting in any month more than in the month of Sha'ban.

Shaban was the month most fasted by the Prophet ﷺ outside of Ramadan

(712) bukhari:1970Muʿādh b. Faḍālah > Hishām > Yaḥyá > Abū Salamah > ʿĀʾishah

The Prophet ﷺ never fasted in any month more than in the month of Sha'ban.

He used to say, "Do those deeds which you can do easily, as Allah will not get tired (of giving rewards) till you get bored and tired (of performing religious deeds)." The most beloved prayer to the Prophet ﷺ was the one that was done regularly (throughout the life) even if it were little. And whenever the Prophet ﷺ offered a prayer he used to offer it regularly.

(713) bukhari:1971Mūsá b. Ismāʿīl > Abū ʿAwānah > Abū Bishr > Saʿīd > Ibn ʿAbbās

The Prophet ﷺ never fasted a full month except the month of Ramadan, and he used to fast till one could say, "By Allah, he will never stop fasting," and he would abandon fasting till one would say, "By Allah, he will never fast."

13.35 Prohibition of Fasting for a lifetime for the one who will be harmed by that or who will neglect other duties, or does not break his fast on the two 'Ids or during the days of At-Tashriq; It is better to fast alternate days

The best voluntary fast is the fast of Dawud

(714) bukhari:1976Abū al-Yamān > Shuʿayb > al-Zuhrī > Saʿīd b. al-Musayyab > Abū Salamah b. ʿAbd al-Raḥman > ʿAbdullāh b. ʿAmr

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was informed that I was saying, “By Allah, I will certainly fast by day and stand in prayer by night as long as I live.” So I said to him, “I did say it; may my father and mother be sacrificed for you.” He said: “You will not be able to do that. So fast and break your fast, stand in prayer and sleep, and fast three days of the month; for a good deed is multiplied by ten like it, and that is like fasting for a lifetime.” I said, “I am able to do better than that.” He said: “Then fast one day and break your fast for two days.” I said, “I am able to do better than that.” He said: “Then fast one day and break your fast one day; that is the fasting of Dawud, ﷺ , and it is the best fasting.” I then said, “I am able to do better than that.” So the Prophet ﷺ said: “There is nothing better than that.”

(715) bukhari:1975Ibn Muqātil > ʿAbdullāh > al-Awzāʿī > Yaḥyá b. Abū Kathīr > Abū Salamah b. ʿAbd al-Raḥman > ʿAbdullāh b. ʿAmr b. al-ʿĀṣ

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me: “O Abdullah, have I not been informed that you fast during the day and stand (in prayer) at night?” I said: Yes, O Messenger of Allah. He said: “Do not do that. Fast and break your fast; stand ˹in prayer˺ and sleep. For your body has a right over you, your eyes have a right over you, your wife has a right over you, and your guest has a right over you. It is sufficient for you to fast three days every month, for for every good deed you have ten like it, and that is like fasting for the whole lifetime.”

So I insisted, and it was made stricter for me. I said: O Messenger of Allah, I find strength ˹to do more˺. He said: “Then fast the fasting of the Prophet of Allah, Dawud ᴬˢ, and do not go beyond that.” I asekd: And what was the fasting of the Prophet of Allah, Dawud ᴬˢ? He said: “Half of the time (i.e. alternate days).”

And Abdullah used to say after he grew old: Would that I had accepted the concession of the Prophet ﷺ.

It reached the Prophet ﷺ that I fast continuously and pray at night. Either he sent for me or I met him, and he said: “Have I not been informed that you fast and do not break your fast, and that you pray? So fast and break your fast; stand (in prayer) and sleep. For your eyes have a right over you, and your own self and your family have a right over you.” I said: I am strong enough for that. He said: *“Then fast the fasting of Dawud ᴬˢ.” I said: And how is that? He said: “He used to fast one day and break his fast one day, and he would not flee when he met (the enemy).” I said: Who can manage that for me, O Prophet of Allah? – Ata said: I do not know how he mentioned fasting forever – The Prophet ﷺ said: “He has not fasted who fasts forever,” twice.

In the morning of the 20th of Ramadan, the Prophet ﷺ came and addressed us and said, 'I was informed of (the date of the Night of Qadr) but I was caused to forget it; so search for it in the odd nights of the last ten nights of the month of Ramadan. (In the dream) I saw myself prostrating in mud and water (as a sign). So, whoever was in Iʿtikaf with me should return to it with me (for another 10-day's period)', and we returned. At that time there was no sign of clouds in the sky but suddenly a cloud came and it rained till rainwater started leaking through the roof of the mosque which was made of date-palm leaf stalks. Then the prayer was established and I saw Messenger of Allah ﷺ prostrating in mud and water and I saw the traces of mud on his forehead."

Seeking Laylat al-Qadr in the odd nights of the last ten

(725) bukhari:2018Ibrāhīm b. Ḥamzah > Ibn Abī Ḥāzim and al-Darāwardī > Yazīd > Muḥammad b. Ibrāhīm > Abū Salamah > Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to observe i'tikaf in Ramadan during the ten nights in the middle of the month. When evening came after twenty nights had passed and the twenty-first was beginning, he would return to his dwelling, and those who had been observing i'tikaf with him would return as well.

Then, in a month in which he was observing i'tikaf, he remained on the night on which he used to return. He addressed the people and instructed them as Allah willed, then said: "I used to observe i'tikaf during these ten, but it has now become apparent to me that I should observe i'tikaf during these last ten. So whoever was observing i'tikaf with me should remain in his place of i'tikaf. I was shown this night, then I was made to forget it, so seek it in the last ten, and seek it on every odd night. I saw myself prostrating in water and mud."

The sky then opened up with rain on that night, and it rained, so the mosque leaked at the prayer place of the Prophet ﷺ on the night of the twenty-first. My own eyes saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and I looked at him as he left from the morning prayer with his face full of mud and water.
