[Machine] From 'Amr ibn Malik al-Jawni, from Fadala ibn 'Ubayd, from 'Ubadah ibn as-Samit, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out one day on his mount and his companions were with him. Mu'adh ibn Jabal said: "O Messenger of Allah, may I have permission to approach you out of my own desire?" He ﷺ said, "Yes." So Mu'adh drew closer to him until they were side by side. Mu'adh said, "O Messenger of Allah, by my father and mother, may my life be ransomed for you - make our day be before your day. What do you think if we don't see anything or any more days, if Allah so wills? What action should we do after you?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ fell silent. He then said, "Jihad in the cause of Allah." Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Jihad is indeed a good thing. But the fasting and charity that man offers are also good." He (Mu'adh) asked, "O Messenger of Allah, what about my father and mother? Is there anything that I can bring them that is better than this?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ pointed towards Mu'adh and said, "Silence is a virtue." He (Mu'adh) said, "And will we really be punished for what our tongues utter?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then struck his thigh and said, "O Mu'adh, May your mother be bereaved of you! Will people be thrown on their faces or on their noses into Hell unless their tongues speak what they utter? Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should either speak what is good or remain silent."
