So Ibn al-Barssai al-Laythi said to him, "He is Abdur Rahman ibn Azhar," and he raised a stick in his hand and struck him, causing his cheek to bruise, and said, 'You have been hostile to us in the time of ignorance and envy us in Islam, and you have come between me and Ibn Azhar.'"  

جَعَلَنِي عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ يَتِيمًا فِي حِجْرِهِ يَزْعُمُ بِقُوتِهِ أَنَّهُ يَكْفِيهِ إِيَّايَ فَقَالَ لَهُ ابْنُ الْبَرْصَاءِ اللَّيْثِيُّ إِنَّهُ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ أَزْهَرَ فَرَفَعَ عَصًا فِي يَدِهِ وَضَرَبَهُ فَشَجَّهُ وَقَالَ «أَعَدُوُّنَا فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ وَتَحْسِدُنَا فِي الْإِسْلَامِ وَتَدْخُلَ بَيْنِي وَبَيْنَ ابْنِ الْأَزْهَرِ»
