hakim:3845Abū Zakariyyā al-ʿAnbarī > al-Ḥusayn b. Muḥammad al-Qabbānī > Saʿīd b. Yaḥyá al-Umawī > ʿAbdullāh b. al-Mubārak > Usāmah b. Zayd > ʿIkrimah > Ibn ʿAbbās

that he (Ibn ʿAbbās) asked regarding ˹Allah's˺ statement ﷻ, 'The day the shin will be exposed' (Qalam 68:42), he said: 'If something is hidden from the Quran for you then seek it in poetry, for it is the dīwān (register) of the Arabs.'

As you've heard the poet saying: [..poetry omitted..], Ibn ʿAbbās said: 'This is the day of distress and severity.'

This ḥadīth has a sound chain. This is a more appropriate ḥadith than the one narrated by Ibn Masʿūd through a sound chain, whose narration does not add significance to this topic.

quran:68:42

The Day the shin will be uncovered and they will be invited to prostration but they will not be able,

Mention, the day when the shank is bared (an expression denoting the severity of the predicament during the reckoning and the requital on the Day of Resurrection: one says kashafati’l-harbu ‘an sāqin, ‘the war has bared its shank’, to mean that it has intensified) and they are summoned to prostrate themselves, as a test of their faith, but they will not be able ˹to do so˺ — their backs will become as ˹stiff as˺ a brick wall.
