[Machine] Regarding the Prophet ﷺ , he said, "When you go to the toilet, do not face the qibla (direction of prayer) with feces or urine, and do not turn your back towards it." Abu Ayyub said, "When we arrived in Sham (Syria), we found toilets that were built facing the qibla. So we would turn away (from the qibla) and seek forgiveness from Allah." Abu Muhammad (Imam Malik) said, "This narration from Abd al-Karim is more reliable, and Abd al-Karim is almost as trustworthy as someone whose narration is completely abandoned."  

الدارمي:٦٩٢ – أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو نُعَيْمٍ حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ عَنْ أَبِي أَيُّوبَ

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ «إِذَا أَتَيْتُمُ الْغَائِطَ فَلَا تَسْتَقْبِلُوا الْقِبْلَةَ بِغَائِطٍ وَلَا بَوْلٍ وَلَا تَسْتَدْبِرُوهَا» قَالَ ثُمَّ قَالَ أَبُو أَيُّوبَ فَقَدِمْنَا الشَّامَ فَوَجَدْنَا مَرَاحِيضَ قَدْ بُنِيَتْ عِنْدَ الْقِبْلَةِ فَنَنْحَرِفُ وَنَسْتَغْفِرُ اللَّهَ قَالَ أَبُو مُحَمَّدٍ «وَهَذَا أَصَحُّ مِنْ حَدِيثِ عَبْدِ الْكَرِيمِ وَعَبْدُ الْكَرِيمِ شِبْهُ الْمَتْرُوكِ»

The Apostle of Allah ﷺ said: Whenever you go to the desert, neither turn your face nor turn your back towards the Qibla while answering the call of nature, but face towards the east or the west. Abu Ayyub said: When we came to Syria we found that the latrines already built there were facing towards the Qibla. We turned our faces away from them and begged forgiveness of the Lord. He said: Yes.  

مسلم:٢٦٤ – وَحَدَّثَنَا زُهَيْرُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ وَابْنُ نُمَيْرٍ قَالاَ حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ ح قَالَ وَحَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ يَحْيَى وَاللَّفْظُ لَهُ قَالَ قُلْتُ لِسُفْيَانَ بْنِ عُيَيْنَةَ سَمِعْتَ الزُّهْرِيَّ يَذْكُرُ عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ اللَّيْثِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي أَيُّوبَ

That he (the Holy Prophet, sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam) said:"When you go to the privy, neither turn your face nor your back towards the qiblah at the time of excretion or urination, but turn towards the east or the west. (Abu Ayyub said): When we came to Syria, we found that the toilets already built there were facing the qiblah, We turned our faces away from them and begged pardon of Allaah.  

أبو داود:٩ – حَدَّثَنَا مُسَدَّدُ بْنُ مُسَرْهَدٍ حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ اللَّيْثِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي أَيُّوبَ رِوَايَةً قَالَ

إِذَا أَتَيْتُمُ الْغَائِطَ فَلاَ تَسْتَقْبِلُوا الْقِبْلَةَ بِغَائِطٍ وَلاَ بَوْلٍ وَلَكِنْ شَرِّقُوا أَوْ غَرِّبُوا فَقَدِمْنَا الشَّامَ فَوَجَدْنَا مَرَاحِيضَ قَدْ بُنِيَتْ قِبَلَ الْقِبْلَةِ فَكُنَّا نَنْحَرِفُ عَنْهَا وَنَسْتَغْفِرُ اللَّهَ  

tirmidhi:8 – Saʿīd b. ʿAbd al-Raḥman al-Makhzūmī > Sufyān b. ʿUyaynah > al-Zuhrī > ʿAṭāʾ b. Yazīd al-Laythī > Abū Ayyūb al-Anṣārī

Messenger of Allah said: "When one of you arrives to defecate, then let none of you face the Qiblah while defecating, nor while urinating. And do not have your back towards it, but have it east of you or west of you."  

الترمذي:٨ – حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ الْمَخْزُومِيُّ حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ اللَّيْثِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي أَيُّوبَ الأَنْصَارِيِّ قَالَ

قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى وَفِي الْبَابِ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ بْنِ جَزْءٍ الزُّبَيْدِيِّ وَمَعْقِلِ بْنِ أَبِي الْهَيْثَمِ وَيُقَالُ مَعْقِلُ بْنُ أَبِي مَعْقِلٍ وَأَبِي أُمَامَةَ وَأَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ وَسَهْلِ بْنِ حُنَيْفٍ قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى حَدِيثُ أَبِي أَيُّوبَ أَحْسَنُ شَيْءٍ فِي هَذَا الْبَابِ وَأَصَحُّ وَأَبُو أَيُّوبَ اسْمُهُ خَالِدُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ وَالزُّهْرِيُّ اسْمُهُ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مُسْلِمِ بْنِ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ شِهَابٍ الزُّهْرِيُّ وَكُنْيَتُهُ أَبُو بَكْرٍ قَالَ أَبُو الْوَلِيدِ الْمَكِّيُّ قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِدْرِيسَ الشَّافِعِيُّ إِنَّمَا مَعْنَى قَوْلِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ لاَ تَسْتَقْبِلُوا الْقِبْلَةَ بِغَائِطٍ وَلاَ بِبَوْلٍ وَلاَ تَسْتَدْبِرُوهَا إِنَّمَا هَذَا فِي الْفَيَافِي وَأَمَّا فِي الْكُنُفِ الْمَبْنِيَّةِ لَهُ رُخْصَةٌ فِي أَنْ يَسْتَقْبِلَهَا وَهَكَذَا قَالَ إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَقَالَ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ حَنْبَلٍ رَحِمَهُ اللَّهُ إِنَّمَا الرُّخْصَةُ مِنَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فِي اسْتِدْبَارِ الْقِبْلَةِ بِغَائِطٍ أَوْ بَوْلٍ وَأَمَّا اسْتِقْبَالُ الْقِبْلَةِ فَلاَ يَسْتَقْبِلُهَا كَأَنَّهُ لَمْ يَرَ فِي الصَّحْرَاءِ وَلاَ فِي الْكُنُفِ أَنْ يَسْتَقْبِلَ الْقِبْلَةَ
