Ibn ʿAbbas said, "O Muslims? How do you ask the people of the Scriptures, though your Book (i.e. the Qur'an) which was revealed to His Prophet is the most recent information from Allah and you recite it, the Book that has not been distorted? Allah has revealed to you that the people of the scriptures have changed with their own hands what was revealed to them and they have said (as regards their changed Scriptures): This is from Allah, in order to get some worldly benefit thereby." Ibn ʿAbbas added: "Isn't the knowledge revealed to you sufficient to prevent you from asking them? By Allah I have never seen any one of them asking (Muslims) about what has been revealed to you."  

يَا مَعْشَرَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ كَيْفَ تَسْأَلُونَ أَهْلَ الْكِتَابِ وَكِتَابُكُمُ الَّذِي أُنْزِلَ عَلَى نَبِيِّهِ ﷺ أَحْدَثُ الأَخْبَارِ بِاللَّهِ تَقْرَءُونَهُ لَمْ يُشَبْ وَقَدْ حَدَّثَكُمُ اللَّهُ أَنَّ أَهْلَ الْكِتَابِ بَدَّلُوا مَا كَتَبَ اللَّهُ وَغَيَّرُوا بِأَيْدِيهِمُ الْكِتَابَ فَقَالُوا هُوَ مِنْ عِنْدِ اللَّهِ لِيَشْتَرُوا بِهِ ثَمَنًا قَلِيلاً أَفَلاَ يَنْهَاكُمْ مَا جَاءَكُمْ مِنَ الْعِلْمِ عَنْ مُسَاءَلَتِهِمْ وَلاَ وَاللَّهِ مَا رَأَيْنَا مِنْهُمْ رَجُلاً قَطُّ يَسْأَلُكُمْ عَنِ الَّذِي أُنْزِلَ عَلَيْكُمْ  

Ibn ʿAbbas said, "Why do you ask the people of the scripture about anything while your Book (Qur'an) which has been revealed to Messenger of Allah ﷺ is newer and the latest? You read it pure, undistorted and unchanged, and Allah has told you that the people of the scripture (Jews and Christians) changed their scripture and distorted it, and wrote the scripture with their own hands and said, 'It is from Allah,' to sell it for a little gain. Does not the knowledge which has come to you prevent you from asking them about anything? No, by Allah, we have never seen any man from them asking you regarding what has been revealed to you!"  

عَنْ شَىْءٍ وَكِتَابُكُمُ الَّذِي أُنْزِلَ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَحْدَثُ تَقْرَءُونَهُ مَحْضًا لَمْ يُشَبْ وَقَدْ حَدَّثَكُمْ أَنَّ أَهْلَ الْكِتَابِ بَدَّلُوا كِتَابَ اللَّهِ وَغَيَّرُوهُ وَكَتَبُوا بِأَيْدِيهِمُ الْكِتَابَ وَقَالُوا هُوَ مِنْ عِنْدِ اللَّهِ لِيَشْتَرُوا بِهِ ثَمَنًا قَلِيلاً أَلاَ يَنْهَاكُمْ مَا جَاءَكُمْ مِنَ الْعِلْمِ عَنْ مَسْأَلَتِهِمْ لاَ وَاللَّهِ مَا رَأَيْنَا مِنْهُمْ رَجُلاً يَسْأَلُكُمْ عَنِ الَّذِي أُنْزِلَ عَلَيْكُمْ  

[Machine] How do you ask about something while you have the Book of Allah, which contains the latest news from Allah? Allah has informed you that they have written a book with their own hands, distorted and changed it, and they claim that it is from Allah. And they have sold it for a small price. But the Book of Allah is pure and has not been altered. By Allah, none of them will ask you about what has been revealed to you.  

كَيْفَ تُسْأَلُونَ عَنْ شَيْءٍ وَعِنْدَكُمْ كِتَابُ اللَّهِ أَحْدَثُ الْأَخْبَارِ بِاللَّهِ وَقَدْ أَخْبَرَكُمْ أَنَّهُمْ كَتَبُوا كِتَابًا بِأَيْدِيهِمْ وَبَدَّلُوا وَحَرَّفُوا وَقَالُوا هَذَا مِنْ عِنْدِ اللَّهِ وَاشْتَرُوا بِهِ ثَمَنًا قَلِيلًا فَعِنْدَكُمْ كِتَابُ اللَّهِ مَحْضٌ لَمْ يُشَبْ فَوَاللَّهِ لَا يَسْأَلُكُمْ أَحَدٌ مِنْهُمْ عَنِ الَّذِي أُنْزِلَ عَلَيْكُمْ  

[Machine] He said, "How can you ask the people of the Book about something while your own book, which Allah has revealed to His Prophet ﷺ , contains the most recent news? You read it purely, without distortion, and has not become corrupt. Hasn't Allah informed you in His book that they distorted the book of Allah and changed it, and wrote a book with their own hands, claiming that it is from Allah, in order to profit from it at a low price? Let the knowledge that has come to you prevent you from asking them. By Allah, we have never seen any of them asking you about what Allah has revealed to you."  

أَنَّهُ قَالَ كَيْفَ تَسْأَلُونَ أَهْلَ الْكِتَابِ عَنْ شَيْءٍ وَكِتَابُكُمُ الَّذِي أَنْزَلَ اللهُ عَلَى نَبِيِّهِ ﷺ أَحْدَثُ الْأَخْبَارِ تَقْرَءُونَهُ مَحْضًا لَمْ يُشَبْ أَلَمْ يُخْبِرْكُمُ اللهُ فِي كِتَابِهِ أَنَّهُمْ حَرَّفُوا كِتَابَ اللهِ وَبَدَّلُوا وَكَتَبُوا كِتَابًا بِأَيْدِيهِمْ فَقَالُوا هَذَا مِنْ عِنْدِ اللهِ لِيَشْتَرُوا بِهِ ثَمَنًا قَلِيلًا؟ لِيَنْهَاكُمُ الْعِلْمُ الَّذِي جَاءَكُمْ عَنْ مَسْأَلَتِهِمْ وَاللهِ مَا رَأَيْنَا رَجُلًا مِنْهُمْ قَطُّ يَسْأَلُكُمْ عَمَّا أَنْزَلَ اللهُ إِلَيْكُمْ  

[Machine] What is the thing and your book that Allah sent down to His Messenger, the latest news about Allah? Do you read it just as it has been narrated? Allah has informed you that the people of the Book have changed what Allah has written and they have altered and written books with their own hands. They say, "This is from Allah," in order to gain a small price for it. So, why don't they forbid you from asking them about what has been revealed to you from knowledge? No, by Allah, we have never seen any of them asking you about what has been revealed to you. And Ali bin Ahmad bin Abdan informed us that Ahmad bin Ubayd Al-Saffar reported to us that Ubayd bin Sharik reported to us that Yahya bin Bukayr reported to us from Al-Layth who reported from Yunus who narrated it in its meaning.  

شَيْءٍ وَكِتَابُكُمُ الَّذِي أَنْزَلَ اللهُ عَلَى رَسُولِهِ أَحْدَثُ الْأَخْبَارِ بِاللهِ؟ تَقْرَءُونَهُ مَحْضًا لَمْ يُشَبْ وَقَدْ حَدَّثَكُمُ اللهُ أَنَّ أَهْلَ الْكِتَابِ قَدْ بَدَّلُوا مَا كَتَبَ اللهُ وَغَيَّرُوا وَكَتَبُوا بِأَيْدِيهِمُ الْكُتُبَ وَقَالُوا هُوَ مِنْ عِنْدِ اللهِ لِيَشْتَرُوا بِهِ ثَمَنًا قَلِيلًا أَفَلَا يَنْهَاكُمْ مَا جَاءَكُمْ مِنَ الْعِلْمِ عَنْ مُسَاءَلَتِهِمْ؟ فَلَا وَاللهِ مَا رَأَيْنَا رَجُلًا مِنْهُمْ قَطُّ يَسْأَلُكُمْ عَنِ الَّذِي أُنْزِلَ عَلَيْكُمْ 20614 وَأَخْبَرَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ عَبْدَانَ أنبأ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عُبَيْدٍ الصَّفَّارُ ثنا عُبَيْدُ بْنُ شَرِيكٍ ثنا يَحْيَى بْنُ بُكَيْرٍ ثنا اللَّيْثُ عَنْ يُونُسَ عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ فَذَكَرَهُ بِمَعْنَاهُ
