I wrote a letter to Nafiʿ and Nafiʿ wrote in reply to my letter that the Prophet ﷺ had suddenly attacked Bani Mustaliq without warning while they were heedless and their cattle were being watered at the places of water. Their fighting men were killed and their women and children were taken as captives; the Prophet ﷺ got Juwairiya on that day. Nafiʿ said that Ibn ʿUmar had told him the above narration and that Ibn ʿUmar was in that army.

I wrote to Nafi' inquiring from him whether it was necessary to extend (to the disbelievers) an invitation to accept (Islam) before meeting them in fight. He wrote (in reply) to me that it was necessary in the early days of Islam. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ made a raid upon Banu Mustaliq while they were unaware and their cattle were having a drink at the water. He killed those who fought and imprisoned others. On that very day, he captured Juwairiya bint al-Harith. Nafi' said that this tradition was related to him by Abdullah b. Umar who (himself) was among the raiding troops.

Ibn ‘Awn said “I wrote to Nafi’ asking him about summoning the polytheists (to Islam) at the time of fighting. So, he wrote to me “This was in the early days of Islam. The Prophet of Allaah ﷺ attacked Banu Al Mustaliq while they were inattentive and their cattle were drinking water. So their fighters were killed and the survivors (i.e., women and children) were taken prisoners. On that day Juwairiyyah daughter of Al Harith was obtained. ‘Abd Allaah narrated this to me, he was in that army.” Abu Dawud said “This is a good tradition narrtted by Ibn ‘Awn from Nafi’ and no one shared him in narrating it.”

[Machine] I wrote to Nafi' asking him, "Was the invitation before the battle?" He replied, "Yes, that was in the early days of Islam, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was angered by Banu Mustaliq, who had raided their livestock, and their animals were being watered. He killed their fighters, captured their captives, and on that day, Juwayriyah bint al-Harith was taken captive. Abdullah bin Umar narrated this hadith to me, and he was in that army."
