ʿAli came to the Prophet ﷺ from Yemen (to Mecca). The Prophet ﷺ asked ʿAli, "With what intention have you assumed Ihram?" ʿAli replied, "I have assumed Ihram with the same intention as that of the Prophet." The Prophet ﷺ said, "If I had not the Hadi with me I would have finished the Ihram." Muhammad bin Bakr narrated extra from Ibn Juraij, "The Prophet ﷺ said to ʿAli, "With what intention have you assumed the Ihram, O ʿAli?" He replied, "With the same (intention) as that of the Prophet." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Have a Hadi and keep your Ihram as it is."  

البخاري:١٥٥٨ – حَدَّثَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ الْخَلاَّلُ الْهُذَلِيُّ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الصَّمَدِ حَدَّثَنَا سَلِيمُ بْنُ حَيَّانَ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ مَرْوَانَ الأَصْفَرَ عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ ؓ قَالَ

قَدِمَ عَلِيٌّ ؓ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ مِنَ الْيَمَنِ فَقَالَ بِمَا أَهْلَلْتَ قَالَ بِمَا أَهَلَّ بِهِ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ فَقَالَ لَوْلاَ أَنَّ مَعِي الْهَدْىَ لأَحْلَلْتُ وَزَادَ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَكْرٍ عَنِ ابْنِ جُرَيْجٍ قَالَ لَهُ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ بِمَا أَهْلَلْتَ يَا عَلِيُّ قَالَ بِمَا أَهَلَّ بِهِ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ قَالَ فَأَهْدِ وَامْكُثْ حَرَامًا كَمَا أَنْتَ

Jabir said, "The Prophet ﷺ ordered ʿAli to keep the state of Ihram." Jabir added, "Ali bin Abi Talib returned (from Yemen) when he was a governor (of Yemen). The Prophet ﷺ said to him, 'With what intention have you assumed the state of Ihram?' ʿAli said, "I have assumed Ihram with an intention as that of the Prophet." Then the Prophet ﷺ said (to him), 'Offer a Hadi and keep the state of Ihram in which you are now.' ʿAli slaughtered a Hadi on his behalf."  

البخاري:٤٣٥٢ – حَدَّثَنَا الْمَكِّيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنِ ابْنِ جُرَيْجٍ قَالَ عَطَاءٌ قَالَ

جَابِرٌ أَمَرَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ عَلِيًّا أَنْ يُقِيمَ عَلَى إِحْرَامِهِ زَادَ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَكْرٍ عَنِ ابْنِ جُرَيْجٍ قَالَ عَطَاءٌ قَالَ جَابِرٌ فَقَدِمَ عَلِيُّ بْنُ أَبِي طَالِبٍ ؓ بِسِعَايَتِهِ قَالَ لَهُ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ بِمَ أَهْلَلْتَ يَا عَلِيُّ قَالَ بِمَا أَهَلَّ بِهِ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ قَالَ فَأَهْدِ وَامْكُثْ حَرَامًا كَمَا أَنْتَ قَالَ وَأَهْدَى لَهُ عَلِيٌّ هَدْيًا  

tirmidhi:956 – ʿAbd al-Wārith b. ʿAbd al-Ṣamad b. ʿAbd al-Wārith from my father > Salīm b. Ḥayyān > Marwān al-Aṣfar > Anas b. Mālik

"When Ali returned to the Messenger of Allah from Yemen he said: 'For what did you intended the Talbiyah?' He replied: 'I intended the Talbiyah for what the Messenger of Allah announced it.' So he (pbuh) said: 'If I did not have the Hadi with me then I would exit Ihram.'"  

Abū ʿĪsá said that this Ḥadīth is Ḥasan-Gharīb in this particular context.
الترمذي:٩٥٦ – حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْوَارِثِ بْنُ عَبْدِ الصَّمَدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْوَارِثِ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي حَدَّثَنَا سَلِيمُ بْنُ حَيَّانَ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ مَرْوَانَ الأَصْفَرَ عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ

أَنَّ عَلِيًّا قَدِمَ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ مِنَ الْيَمَنِ فَقَالَ بِمَ أَهْلَلْتَ قَالَ أَهْلَلْتُ بِمَا أَهَلَّ بِهِ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ لَوْلاَ أَنَّ مَعِي هَدْيًا لأَحْلَلْتُ  

قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ غَرِيبٌ مِنْ هَذَا الْوَجْهِ
