Not chastising those who give charity as much as they are able to

bukhari:1415 – ʿUbaydullāh b. Saʿīd > Abū al-Nuʿmān al-Ḥakam > Ibn ʿAbdullāh al-Baṣrī > Shuʿbah > Sulaymān > Abū Wāʾil > Abū Masʿūd

When the ayah concerning charity was revealed, we used to carry loads. Then a man came and gave a large amount in charity, and they said, “He is showing off.” Another man came and gave a sā (a small measure), and they said, “Surely God has no need of this man’s sā.” Then the verse was revealed: “Those who criticize the voluntary givers among the believers in charitable offerings, and those who find nothing to give except what they can with effort…” (Tawbah 9:79).  

البخاري:١٤١٥ – حَدَّثَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو النُّعْمَانِ الْحَكَمُ هُوَ ابْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الْبَصْرِيُّ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ عَنْ سُلَيْمَانَ عَنْ أَبِي وَائِلٍ عَنْ أَبِي مَسْعُودٍ ؓ قَالَ

لَمَّا نَزَلَتْ آيَةُ الصَّدَقَةِ كُنَّا نُحَامِلُ فَجَاءَ رَجُلٌ فَتَصَدَّقَ بِشَىْءٍ كَثِيرٍ فَقَالُوا: مُرَائِي. وَجَاءَ رَجُلٌ فَتَصَدَّقَ بِصَاعٍ فَقَالُوا: إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَغَنِيٌّ عَنْ صَاعِ هَذَا. فَنَزَلَتِ { الَّذِينَ يَلْمِزُونَ الْمُطَّوِّعِينَ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ فِي الصَّدَقَاتِ وَالَّذِينَ لاَ يَجِدُونَ إِلاَّ جُهْدَهُمْ } الآيَةَ

When we were ordered to give alms, we began to work as porters (to earn something we could give in charity). Abu ʿAqil came with one half of a Saʿ (special measure for food grains) and another person brought more than he did. So the hypocrites said, "Allah is not in need of the alms of this (i.e. Abu ʿAqil); and this other person did not give alms but for showing off." Then Allah revealed:-- 'Those who criticize such of the Believers who give charity voluntarily and those who could not find to give in charity except what is available to them.' (9.79)

"When the Messenger of Allah commanded us to give in charity, Abu 'Aqil give half a Sa', and another man brought much more than that. The hypocrites said: 'Allah has no need of the charity of the former, and the latter only did it to show off. Then the following was revealed: 'Those who defame such of the believers who give charity voluntarily, and such who could not find to give charity except what is available to them."'[1]  

النسائي:٢٥٣٠ – أَخْبَرَنَا بِشْرُ بْنُ خَالِدٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا غُنْدَرٌ عَنْ شُعْبَةَ عَنْ سُلَيْمَانَ عَنْ أَبِي وَائِلٍ عَنْ أَبِي مَسْعُودٍ قَالَ

They said, 'Allah is self-sufficient while this is just a ploy.' Allah then revealed, 'Those who criticize the contributors among the believers concerning [their] charities and [criticize] the ones who find nothing [to spend] except their effort.'" (Quran 9:79)
