[Machine] He used to say that some people say, "When you sit down to relieve yourself, do not face the Qibla (direction of prayer) or the Al-Masjid Al-Haram (the Sacred Mosque)." Abdullah bin Umar said, "I have climbed upon the roof of our house and saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on two stones facing the Al-Masjid Al-Haram for his needs." Abu Abdullah Al-Hafiz informed us that Abu Bakr bin Ishaq informed us that Muhammad bin Ghaleb informed us that Abdullah bin Qa'nabi narrated it from Malik, and it was narrated by Al-Bukhari in his Sahih from Abdullah bin Yusuf from Malik.  

البيهقي:٤٣٥ – أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو زَكَرِيَّا بْنُ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ الْمُزَكِّي وَأَبُو بَكْرٍ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ الْقَاضِي قَالَا نا أَبُو الْعَبَّاسِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ أنا الرَّبِيعُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ أنا الشَّافِعِيُّ أنا مَالِكٌ عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ سَعِيدٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ يَحْيَى بْنِ حِبَّانَ عَنْ عَمِّهِ وَاسِعِ بْنِ حِبَّانَ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ

أَنَّهُ كَانَ يَقُولُ إِنَّ أُنَاسًا يَقُولُونَ إِذَا قَعَدْتَ عَلَى حَاجَتِكَ فَلَا تَسْتَقْبَلِ الْقِبْلَةَ وَلَا بَيْتَ الْمَقْدِسِ قَالَ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ عُمَرَ لَقَدِ ارْتَقَيْتُ عَلَى ظَهْرِ بَيْتِنَا فَرَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ عَلَى لَبِنَتَيْنِ مُسْتَقْبِلًا بَيْتَ الْمَقْدِسِ لِحَاجَتِهِ 436 وَأَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ أنا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ أنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ غَالِبٍ أنا عَبْدُ اللهِ هُوَ الْقَعْنَبِيُّ عَنْ مَالِكٍ فَذَكَرَهُ بِإِسْنَادِهِ نَحْوَهُ وَرَوَاهُ الْبُخَارِيُّ فِي الصَّحِيحِ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ يُوسُفَ عَنْ مَالِكٍ

People say, "Whenever you sit for answering the call of nature, you should not face the Qibla or Baitul-Maqdis (Jerusalem)." I told them. "Once I went up the roof of our house and I saw Allah's Apostle answering the call of nature while sitting on two bricks facing Baitul-Maqdis (Jerusalem) (but there was a screen covering him. أَنَّهُ كَانَ يَقُولُ إِنَّ نَاسًا يَقُولُونَ إِذَا قَعَدْتَ عَلَى حَاجَتِكَ فَلاَ تَسْتَقْبِلِ الْقِبْلَةَ وَلاَ بَيْتَ الْمَقْدِسِ فَقَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عُمَرَ لَقَدِ ارْتَقَيْتُ يَوْمًا عَلَى ظَهْرِ بَيْتٍ لَنَا فَرَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَلَى لَبِنَتَيْنِ مُسْتَقْبِلاً بَيْتَ الْمَقْدِسِ لِحَاجَتِهِ وَقَالَ لَعَلَّكَ مِنَ الَّذِينَ يُصَلُّونَ عَلَى أَوْرَاكِهِمْ فَقُلْتُ لاَ أَدْرِي وَاللَّهِ قَالَ مَالِكٌ يَعْنِي الَّذِي يُصَلِّي وَلاَ يَرْتَفِعُ عَنِ الأَرْضِ يَسْجُدُ وَهُوَ لاَصِقٌ بِالأَرْضِ

Yahya related to me from Malik from Yahya ibn Said from Muhammad ibn Yahya ibn Habban from his paternal uncle, Wasi ibn Habban, that Abdullah ibn Umar said, "People say, 'When you sit to relieve yourself, do not face the qibla or the Bayt al-Maqdis.' " Abdullah continued, "I went upon top of a house of ours and saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ (squatting) on two unfired bricks facing the Bayt al-Maqdis, relieving himself." Ibn Umar added, "Perhaps you are one of those who pray folded on their haunches." Wasi replied, "I don't know, by Allah!"
