I came to the Prophet ﷺ with some men from my tribe and stayed with him for twenty nights. He was kind and merciful to us. When he realized our longing for our families, he said to us, "Go back and stay with your families and teach them the religion, and offer the prayer and one of you should pronounce the Adhan for the prayer when its time is due and the oldest one amongst you should lead the prayer."

عَنْ مَالِكِ بْنِ الْحُوَيْرِثِ أَتَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فِي نَفَرٍ مِنْ قَوْمِي فَأَقَمْنَا عِنْدَهُ عِشْرِينَ لَيْلَةً وَكَانَ رَحِيمًا رَفِيقًا فَلَمَّا رَأَى شَوْقَنَا إِلَى أَهَالِينَا قَالَ ارْجِعُوا فَكُونُوا فِيهِمْ وَعَلِّمُوهُمْ وَصَلُّوا فَإِذَا حَضَرَتِ الصَّلاَةُ فَلْيُؤَذِّنْ لَكُمْ أَحَدُكُمْ وَلْيَؤُمَّكُمْ أَكْبَرُكُمْ

We came to the Prophet ﷺ and stayed with him for twenty days and nights. We were all young and of about the same age. The Prophet ﷺ was very kind and merciful. When he realized our longing for our families, he asked about our homes and the people there and we told him. Then he asked us to go back to our families and stay with them and teach them (the religion) and to order them to do good things. He also mentioned some other things which I have (remembered or [??] ) forgotten. The Prophet ﷺ then added, "Pray as you have seen me praying and when it is the time for the prayer one of you should pronounce the Adhan and the oldest of you should lead the prayer.

حَدَّثَنَا مَالِكٌ أَتَيْنَا إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ وَنَحْنُ شَبَبَةٌ مُتَقَارِبُونَ فَأَقَمْنَا عِنْدَهُ عِشْرِينَ يَوْمًا وَلَيْلَةً وَكَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ رَحِيمًا رَفِيقًا فَلَمَّا ظَنَّ أَنَّا قَدِ اشْتَهَيْنَا أَهْلَنَا أَوْ قَدِ اشْتَقْنَا سَأَلَنَا عَمَّنْ تَرَكْنَا بَعْدَنَا فَأَخْبَرْنَاهُ قَالَ ارْجِعُوا إِلَى أَهْلِيكُمْ فَأَقِيمُوا فِيهِمْ وَعَلِّمُوهُمْ وَمُرُوهُمْ وَذَكَرَ أَشْيَاءَ أَحْفَظُهَا أَوْ لاَ أَحْفَظُهَا وَصَلُّوا كَمَا رَأَيْتُمُونِي أُصَلِّي فَإِذَا حَضَرَتِ الصَّلاَةُ فَلْيُؤَذِّنْ لَكُمْ أَحَدُكُمْ وَلْيَؤُمَّكُمْ أَكْبَرُكُمْ

Prophet said (to two persons), "Whenever the prayer time becomes due, you should pronounce Adhan and then Iqama and the older of you should lead the prayer."

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ إِذَا حَضَرَتِ الصَّلاَةُ فَأَذِّنَا وَأَقِيمَا ثُمَّ لِيَؤُمَّكُمَا أَكْبَرُكُمَا

We came to the Prophet ﷺ and we were (a few) young men of approximately equal age and stayed with him for twenty nights. Then he thought that we were anxious for our families, and he asked us whom we had left behind to look after our families, and we told him. He was kindhearted and merciful, so he said, "Return to your families and teach them (religious knowledge) and order them (to do good deeds) and offer your prayers in the way you saw me offering my prayers, and when the stated time for the prayer becomes due, then one of you should pronounce its call (i.e. the Adhan), and the eldest of you should lead you in prayer.

أَتَيْنَا النَّبِيَّ ﷺ وَنَحْنُ شَبَبَةٌ مُتَقَارِبُونَ فَأَقَمْنَا عِنْدَهُ عِشْرِينَ لَيْلَةً فَظَنَّ أَنَّا اشْتَقْنَا أَهْلَنَا وَسَأَلَنَا عَمَّنْ تَرَكْنَا فِي أَهْلِنَا فَأَخْبَرْنَاهُ وَكَانَ رَفِيقًا رَحِيمًا فَقَالَ ارْجِعُوا إِلَى أَهْلِيكُمْ فَعَلِّمُوهُمْ وَمُرُوهُمْ وَصَلُّوا كَمَا رَأَيْتُمُونِي أُصَلِّي وَإِذَا حَضَرَتِ الصَّلاَةُ فَلْيُؤَذِّنْ لَكُمْ أَحَدُكُمْ ثُمَّ لِيَؤُمَّكُمْ أَكْبَرُكُمْ

We came to the Prophet ﷺ and we were young men nearly of equal ages and we stayed with him for twenty nights. Messenger of Allah ﷺ was a very kind man and when he realized our longing for our families, he asked us about those whom we had left behind. Then he said, "Pray as you have seen me praying, and when it is the time of prayer, one of you should pronounce the call (Adhan) for the prayer and the eldest of you should lead the prayer. "

We came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and we were all young men of nearly equal age. We stayed with him (the Holy Prophet) for twenty nights, and as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was extremely kind and tender of heart, he therefore, thought that we were eager (to see) our family (we felt homesick). So he asked us about the members of the family that we had left behind and when we informed him, he said: Go back to your family, stay with them, and teach them (beliefs and practices of Islam) and exhort them to good, and when the time for prayer comes, one amongst you should announce Adhan and then the oldest among you should lead the prayer.

I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ along with a companion of mine, and when we intended to return from him, he said: When there is time for prayer, announce prayer, pronounce Iqama, and the oldest amongst you should lead the prayer.

أَتَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ أَنَا وَصَاحِبٌ لِي فَلَمَّا أَرَدْنَا الإِقْفَالَ مِنْ عِنْدِهِ قَالَ لَنَا إِذَا حَضَرَتِ الصَّلاَةُ فَأَذِّنَا ثُمَّ أَقِيمَا وَلْيَؤُمَّكُمَا أَكْبَرُكُمَا

"We came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and we were young men close in age. He let us stay with him for twenty days. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was merciful and compassionate, and he thought that we were missing our families; he asked us about those whom we had left behind of our families, so we told him, and he said: 'Go back to your families, stay with them and teach them. Tell them when the time for prayer comes; let one of you call the Adhan and let the oldest of you lead the prayer.'"

"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me and to a companion of mine: 'When the time for prayer comes, let the two of you call the Adhan then the two of you say Iqamah, then let one of you lead the prayer.'"

لِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَلِصَاحِبٍ لِي إِذَا حَضَرَتِ الصَّلاَةُ فَأَذِّنَا ثُمَّ أَقِيمَا ثُمَّ لْيَؤُمَّكُمَا أَحَدُكُمَا

“I came to the Prophet ﷺ with a friend of mine, and when we wanted to leave, he said to us: ‘When the time for prayer comes, say the Adhan and Iqamah, then let the older of you lead the prayer.’”

أَتَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ أَنَا وَصَاحِبٌ لِي فَلَمَّا أَرَدْنَا الاِنْصِرَافَ قَالَ لَنَا إِذَا حَضَرَتِ الصَّلاَةُ فَأَذِّنَا وَأَقِيمَا وَلْيَؤُمَّكُمَا أَكْبَرُكُمَا

[AI] "I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with a group of my people while we were young. We stayed with him for twenty nights, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was a companion to us. When he saw our yearning for our families, he said, 'Return to your families and be among them. Command them and teach them, and pray as you have seen me pray. When the time for prayer comes, let one of you give the call to prayer and then lead you in prayer, with the most knowledgeable among you leading."'

[AI] We went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while we were young men, closely resembling each other. We stayed with him for twenty nights and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was kind, gentle, and patient. He thought that we missed our families and desired them, so he asked us about who we left behind. We informed him, and he said, "Go back to your families, be with them, teach them, and order them [to do good]." He also said, "When the prayer is due, let one of you give the call to prayer and let the most knowledgeable among you lead the prayer."

أَتَيْنَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فِي نَاسٍ وَنَحْنُ شَبَبَةٌ مُتَقَارِبُونَ فَأَقَمْنَا عِنْدَهُ عِشْرِينَ لَيْلَةً وَكَانَ رَسُولُ الله ﷺ رَحِيمًا رَقِيقًا حَلِيمًا فَظَنَّ أَنَّا قَدِ اشْتَقْنَا أَهْلَنَا وَاشْتَهَيْنَاهُمْ فَسَأَلَنَا عَمَّنْ تَرَكْنَا بَعْدَنَا فَأَخْبَرْنَاهُ فَقَالَ «ارْجِعُوا إِلَى أَهْلِيكُمْ وَأَقِيمُوا عِنْدَهُمْ وَعَلِّمُوهُمْ وَمُرُوهُمْ» وَقَالَ «إِذَا حَضَرَتِ الصَّلَاةُ فَلْيُؤَذِّنْ أَحَدُكُمْ وَلْيَؤُمَّكُمْ أَكْبَرُكُمْ»

[AI] "That the Prophet ﷺ said to him and to his companion, 'When the prayer is due, then give the adhan and then establish it, and let the one amongst you who knows the Qur'an most, lead the prayer.'"

أَتَيْنَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ وَنَحْنُ شَبَبَةٌ مُتَقَارِبُونَ فَأَقَمْنَا عِنْدَهُ عِشْرِينَ لَيْلَةً قَالَ وَكَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ رَحِيمًا رَقِيقًا فَظَنَّ أَنَّا قَدِ اشْتَقْنَا إِلَى أَهْلِنَا وَسَأَلَنَا عَمَّنْ تَرَكْنَا فِي أَهْلِنَا فَأَخْبَرْنَاهُ فَقَالَ ارْجِعُوا إِلَى أَهْلِيكُمْ فَأَقِيمُوا فِيهِمْ وَعَلِّمُوهُمْ وَمُرُوهُمْ وَإِذَا حَضَرَتِ الصَّلَاةُ فَلْيُؤَذِّنْ أَحَدُكُمْ ثُمَّ لِيَؤُمَّكُمْ أَكْبَرُكُمْ

We came to the Prophet ﷺ and we were (a few) young men of approximately equal age and stayed with him for twenty nights. Then he thought that we were anxious for our families, and he asked us whom we had left behind to look after our families, and we told him. He was kindhearted and merciful, so he said, "Return to your families and teach them (religious knowledge) and order them (to do good deeds) and offer your prayers in the way you saw me offering my prayers, and when the stated time for the prayer becomes due, then one of you should pronounce its call (i.e. the Adhan), and the eldest of you should lead you in prayer. Prophet said (to two persons), "Whenever the prayer time becomes due, you should pronounce Adhan and then Iqama and the older of you should lead the prayer." (Using translation from Bukhārī 658)

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ إِذَا حَضَرَتِ الصَّلَاةُ فَأَذِّنَا ثُمَّ أَقِيمَا ثُمَّ لِيَؤُمَّكُمَا أَكْبَرُكُمَا

We came to the Prophet ﷺ and stayed with him for twenty days and nights. We were all young and of about the same age. The Prophet ﷺ was very kind and merciful. When he realized our longing for our families, he asked about our homes and the people there and we told him. Then he asked us to go back to our families and stay with them and teach them (the religion) and to order them to do good things. He also mentioned some other things which I have (remembered or [??] ) forgotten. The Prophet ﷺ then added, "Pray as you have seen me praying and when it is the time for the prayer one of you should pronounce the Adhan and the oldest of you should lead the prayer. أَتَيْنَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ وَنَحْنُ شَبَبَةٌ مُتَقَارِبُونَ فَأَقَمْنَا عِنْدَهُ عِشْرِينَ لَيْلَةً وَكَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ رَحِيمًا رَقِيقًا فَلَمَّا ظَنَّ أَنَّا قَدِ اشْتَهَيْنَا أَهْلِينَا وَاشْتَقْنَا سَأَلَنَا عَمَّا تَرَكْنَا بَعْدُ فَأَخْبَرَنَاهُ فَقَالَ ارْجِعُوا إِلَى أَهَالِيكُمْ فَأَقِيمُوا فِيهِمْ وَعَلِّمُوهُمْ وَمُرُوهُمْ وَذَكَرَ أَشْيَاءَ أَحْفَظُهَا وَأَشْيَاءَ لَا أَحْفَظُهَا وَصَلُّوا كَمَا رَأَيْتُمُونِي أُصَلِّي فَإِذَا حَضَرَتِ الصَّلَاةُ فَلْيُؤَذِّنْ لَكُمْ أَحَدُكُمْ وَلْيَؤُمَّكُمْ أَكْبَرُكُمْ

"ارجعُوا إلى أهْليكُم، فكُونوا فيهم، وعلِّموهم، وَمُرُوهُم، وصلُّوا كما رَأَيتُمُونِى أصَلِّى، فإِذا حضرت الصلاةُ، فَليؤُذِّنْ لَكُم أحدُكم، وليَؤُمَكُم أكبَرُكم".
