In the case of a man who vowed to sacrifice himself, it was said, 'Certainly you have in the Messenger of Allah an excellent example' [Al-Ahzab 33:21], so he was advised to sacrifice a ram.  

البيهقي:٢٠٠٨٢ – وَأَخْبَرَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ عَبْدَانَ أنبأ سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ الطَّبَرَانِيُّ ثنا ابْنُ أَبِي مَرْيَمَ ثنا الْفِرْيَابِيُّ ثنا سُفْيَانُ عَنِ ابْنِ جُرَيْجٍ عَنْ عَطَاءٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ؓ

فِي رَجُلٍ نَذَرَ أَنْ يَذْبَحَ نَفْسَهُ قَالَ {لَقَدْ كَانَ لَكُمْ فِي رَسُولِ اللهِ أُسْوَةٌ} [الأحزاب 21] حَسَنَةٌ فَأَفْتَاهُ بِكَبْشٍ  

هَذَا يَدُلُّ عَلَى أَنَّ رِوَايَةَ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ عُمَرَ خَطَأٌ وَكَذَلِكَ رَوَاهُ غَيْرُ سُفْيَانَ عَنِ ابْنِ جُرَيْجٍ
