[Machine] He whipped him, so he took the whip and 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) counted until he whipped him forty times, then he said to him: "Hold the whip of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forty times, and Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) whipped him eighty times, and each was according to the Sunnah, and this is more beloved to me."  

البيهقي:١٧٥٢٩ – حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ فُورَكٍ أنبأ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ فَارِسٍ ثنا يُونُسُ بْنُ حَبِيبٍ ثَنَا أَبُو دَاوُدَ ثنا عَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ بْنُ الْمُخْتَارِ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ فَيْرُوزٍ عَنْ حُضَيْنٍ أَبِي سَاسَانَ الرَّقَاشِيِّ قَالَ حَضَرْتُ عُثْمَانَ بْنَ عَفَّانَ ؓ وَأُتِيَ الْوَلِيدُ بْنُ عُقْبَةَ قَدْ شَرِبَ الْخَمْرَ وَشَهِدَ عَلَيْهِ حُمْرَانُ بْنُ أَبَانٍ وَرَجُلٌ آخَرُ فَقَالَ عُثْمَانُ لِعَلِيٍّ ؓ أَقِمْ عَلَيْهِ الْحَدَّ فَأَمَرَ عَلِيٌّ ؓ عَبْدَ اللهِ بْنَ جَعْفَرٍ ذِي الْجَنَاحَيْنِ ؓ أَنْ

يَجْلِدَهُ فَأَخَذَ فِي جَلْدِهِ وَعَلِيٌّ ؓ يَعُدُّ حَتَّى جَلَدَ أَرْبَعِينَ ثُمَّ قَالَ لَهُ أَمْسِكْ جَلَدَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ أَرْبَعِينَ وَأَبُو بَكْرٍ ؓ وَجَلَدَ عُمَرُ ؓ ثَمَانِينَ وَكُلٌّ سُنَّةٌ وَهَذَا أَحَبُّ إِلِيَّ
