ʿAbdur-Rahman bin ‘Awf met al-Waleed bin ʿUqbah. Al-Waleed said to him: Why do i see you keeping away from Ameer al-Muʿmineen ʿUthman (-ؓ -)? ʿAbdurRahman said to him:Tell him that I did not flee on the day of ‘Ainain -’Asim said: The day of Uhud - and I did not stay behind on the day of Badr, and I did not turn away from the way of ‘Umar ؓ . So he went and told that to ‘Uthman ؓ , who said: As for his saying that he did not flee on the day of ‘Ainain, how could he shame me for a fault for which Allah has pardoned me and said: ʿThose of you who turned back on the day the two hosts met (i.e. the battle of Uhud), it was Shaitan (Satan) who caused them to backslide (run away from the battlefield) because of some (sins) they had earned. But Allah, indeed, has forgiven themʿ [Al ‘Imran 3:155]? As for his saying that I stayed behind on the day of Badr, was tending Ruqayyah, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , when she was dying, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ allocated to me a share (of the booty), and whoever was allocated a share by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was present. As for his saying that he did not turn away from the way of ‘Umar ( ؓ ), I cannot bear it and not even he could bear it. Go and tell him that,  

أحمد:٤٩٠ – حَدَّثَنَا مُعَاوِيَةُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو حَدَّثَنَا زَائِدَةُ عَنْ عَاصِمٍ عَنْ شَقِيقٍ قَالَلَقِيَ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ عَوْفٍ الْوَلِيدَ بْنَ عُقْبَةَ فَقَالَ

لَهُ الْوَلِيدُ مَا لِي أَرَاكَ قَدْ جَفَوْتَ أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ عُثْمَانَ؟ فَقَالَ لَهُ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ أَبْلِغْهُ أَنِّي لَمْ أَفِرَّ يَوْمَ عَيْنَيْنِ قَالَ عَاصِمٌ يَقُولُ يَوْمَ أُحُدٍ وَلَمْ أَتَخَلَّفْ يَوْمَ بَدْرٍ وَلَمْ أَتْرُكْ سُنَّةَ عُمَرَ قَالَ فَانْطَلَقَ فَخَبَّرَ ذَلِكَ عُثْمَانَ قَالَ فَقَالَ أَمَّا قَوْلُهُ إِنِّي لَمْ أَفِرَّ يَوْمَ عَيْنَيْنَ فَكَيْفَ يُعَيِّرُنِي بِذَنْبٍ وَقَدْ عَفَا اللهُ عَنْهُ فَقَالَ {إِنَّ الَّذِينَ تَوَلَّوْا مِنْكُمْ يَوْمَ الْتَقَى الْجَمْعَانِ إِنَّمَا اسْتَزَلَّهُمُ الشَّيْطَانُ بِبَعْضِ مَا كَسَبُوا وَلَقَدْ عَفَا اللَّهُ عَنْهُمْ} [آل عمران 155] وَأَمَّا قَوْلُهُ إِنِّي تَخَلَّفْتُ يَوْمَ بَدْرٍ فَإِنِّي كُنْتُ أُمَرِّضُ رُقَيَّةَ بِنْتَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ حَتَّى مَاتَتْ وَقَدْ ضَرَبَ لِي رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ بِسَهْمِي وَمَنْ ضَرَبَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ بِسَهْمِهِ فَقَدْ شَهِدَ وَأَمَّا قَوْلُهُ إِنِّي لَمْ أَتْرُكْ سُنَّةَ عُمَرَ فَإِنِّي لَا أُطِيقُهَا وَلا هُوَ فَائْتِهِ فَحَدِّثْهُ بِذَلِكَ

"عَنْ شَقِيقٍ قَالَ: لَقِى عَبْدُ الرَّحْمنِ بْنُ عَوْفٍ الْوَلِيدَ بْنَ عُقْبَةَ فَقَالَ لَهُ: مَا لِى أَرَاكَ قَدْ جَفَوْتَ أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ عُثْمَانَ، فَقَالَ لَهُ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ: أبْلِغُهُ أَنِّى لَمْ أَفِرَّ يَوْمَ عَيْنَيْن، وَلَمْ أَتَخَلَّفْ يَوْمَ بَدْرٍ، وَلَمْ أَتْرُكْ سُنَّةَ عُمَرَ، فَانْطَلَقَ فَخَبرَ ذَلِكَ عُثْمَانَ، فَقَالَ: أَمَا قَوْلُهُ إِنِّى لَمْ أَفِرَّ يَوْمَ عَيْنَيْنِ فَكَيْفَ يُعَيِّرُنِى بِذَلِكَ وَقَدْ عَفَا الله عنِّى؟ فَقالَ: {إِنَّ الَّذِينَ تَوَلَّوْا (*) مِنْكُمْ يَوْمَ الْتَقَى الْجَمْعَانِ إِنَّمَا اسْتَزَلَّهُمُ الشَّيْطَانُ بِبَعْضِ مَا كَسَبُوا وَلَقَدْ عَفَا اللَّهُ عَنْهُمْ}، وَأَمَّا قَوْلُهُ: إِنِّى تَخَلَّفْت عَن بَدْرٍ، فَإِنِّى كنْتُ أُمَرِّضُ رُقَيَّةَ بِنْتَ رسُولِ الله

ﷺ حَتَّى مَاتَتْ، وَقَدْ ضَرَبَ لِى رسُولُ الله ﷺ بسَهْمِى، وَمَن ضَرَبَ لَهُ رسُولُ الله ﷺ بِسَهْمِهِ فَقَدْ شَهِدَ، وَأَمَّا قَوْلُهُ: إِنِّى لَمْ أَتْرُكْ سُنَّةَ عُمَرَ فَإِنِّى لَا أُطِيقُهَا وَلَا هُوَ فَأْتِهِ فَحَدِّثْهُ بِذَلِكَ".
