ahmad:26326Yaʿqūb from my cousin Ibn Shihāb Fadhakar Baʿḍ Ḥadīth al-Ḥudaybiyah > Muḥammad b. Muslim Faʾakhbaranī ʿUrwah b. al-Zubayr

[Machine] Aisha, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ , informed him that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to test the women who migrated to him with this verse: "O Prophet, when the believing women come to you pledging to you that they will not associate anything with Allah, or steal, or commit unlawful sexual intercourse, or kill their children, or bring forth a slander they have fabricated between their arms and legs, or disobey you in what is right, then accept their pledge and ask Allah to forgive them. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful" (Quran 60:12).

Urwah ibn Az-Zubayr said that Aisha asked the women who accepted this condition from among the believers, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to her, "I have already pledged my allegiance to you and, by Allah, my hand has never touched the hand of a woman in allegiance. I have only pledged allegiance to them by saying, 'I have pledged allegiance to you upon that.'"

(the wife of the Prophet) When believing women came to the Prophet ﷺ as emigrants, he used to test them in accordance with the order of Allah. 'O you who believe! When believing women come to you as emigrants, examine them . . .' (60.10) So if anyone of those believing women accepted the above mentioned conditions, she accepted the conditions of faith. When they agreed on those conditions and confessed that with their tongues, Messenger of Allah ﷺ would say to them, "Go, I have accepted your oath of allegiance (for Islam). By Allah, and hand of Messenger of Allah ﷺ never touched the hand of any woman, but he only used to take their pledge of allegiance orally. By Allah, Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not take the pledge of allegiance of the women except in accordance with what Allah had ordered him. When the believing women migrated (to Medina) and came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, they would be tested in accordance with the following words of Allah. the Almighty and Exalted:" O Prophet, when believing women come to thee to take the oath of fealty to thee that they will not associate in worship anything with God, that they will not steal. that, they will not commit adultery..." to the end of the verse (lx. 62). Whoso from the believing women accepted these conditions and agreed to abide by them were considered to have offered themselves for swearing fealty. When they had (formally) declared their resolve to do so, the Messenger of Allah (may peace he upon him) would say to them: You may go. I have confirmed your fealty. By God, the hand of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ never touched the hand of a woman. He would take the oath of fealty from them by oral declaration. By God, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ never took any vow from women except that which God had ordered him to take, and his palm never touched the palm of a woman. When he had taken their vow, he would tell them that he had taken the oath from them orally.

“When the believing women emigrated to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, they would be tested in accordance with Allah’s saying: ‘O Prophet! When believing women come to you to give you the pledge...’”[60:12] ‘Aishah said: “Whoever among the believing women affirmed this, passed the test. When they affirmed that, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would say to them: ‘Go, for you have given your pledge.’ No, by Allah! The hand of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ never touched the hand of any woman, rather he accepted their pledge in words only.” ‘Aishah said: “By Allah, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not demand of women (in their pledge) anything other than that which Allah had commanded, and the hand of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ never touched the hand of a woman. He would say to them, when he had accepted their pledge: ‘You have given your pledge,’ verbally.”
