ahmad-zuhd:1659ʿAbdullāh from my father > ʿAbd al-Quddūs b. Thawr > Abū Bakr b. al-Fuḍayl b. al-Muʾtaman > ʿUqbah b. Khālid al-ʿAbdī

[Machine] Al-Hasan said, "Indeed, hearts die and come alive. So when it dies, carry it upon obligations, and when it comes alive, discipline it in voluntary acts of worship."  

الزهد لأحمد:١٦٥٩حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْقُدُّوسِ بْنُ ثَوْرٍ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ الْفُضَيْلِ بْنِ الْمُؤْتَمَنِ حَدَّثَنَا عُقْبَةُ بْنُ خَالِدٍ الْعَبْدِيُّ قَالَ

قَالَ الْحَسَنُ «إِنَّ الْقُلُوبَ تَمُوتُ وَتَحْيَا فَإِذَا هِيَ مَاتَتْ فَاحْمِلُوهَا عَلَى الْفَرَائِضِ فَإِذَا حَيِيَتْ فَأَدِّبُوهَا فِي التَّطَوُّعِ»
