tirmidhi:3273Ibn Abū ʿUmar > Sufyān b. ʿUyaynah > Salāam > ʿĀṣim b. Abū al-Najūd > Abū Wāʾil > a man from Rabīʿah

from a man of Rabi'ah who said: "I arrived in Al-Madinah, entered upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and mentioned the emissary of 'Ad to him. I said: 'I seek refuge in Allah from being like the emissary of 'Ad.' So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'And what of the emissary of 'Ad?'" He said: "I said: You have got the one who is informed about it. When 'Ad suffered from famine they sent Qail and he stayed with Bakr bin Mu'awiyah. He gave him wine to drink and two slave girls to sing for him. Then he went out towards the mountains of Murrah and said: "O Allah! I did not come to You to cure a sick person, nor to ransom a captive! So give water to Your slave as You used to do, and give water to Bakr bin Mu'awiyah along with him." He said that out of gratitude for the wine which he gave him to drink. So two clouds appeared and it was said to him: "Choose one of them." So he chose the black one. It was said to him: "Take it as ashes that will leave none in 'Ad." So he mentioned that the wind sent upon them was not more than this circle - meaning the circle of a ring - then he recited: "...We sent against them the barren wind; it spared nothing that it reached, but blew it into broken spreads of rotten ruins. [Machine] "I passed by an old woman wearing a torn robe from the Banu Tamim tribe. She asked, 'Where do you want to go?' I said, 'We want the Messenger of Allah ﷺ .' She said, 'Carry me with you, for I have a need to see him.' So, I entered the mosque, and it was filled with people, and I saw a black flag waving. I asked, 'What is happening with the people today?' They said, 'This is the Messenger of Allah ﷺ who wants to send 'Amr ibn al-'As.' I said, 'O Messenger of Allah! If you see fit, make a truce between us and the Banu Tamim, for once we had a truce.' The old woman became stubborn and became angry. She said, 'O Messenger of Allah, where are you taking me?' I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, I brought her (the old woman), and I do not feel that she is a burden to me.' He said, 'I seek refuge with Allah that I ever become as the people who said before.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'What did the people before say?' He said, 'They called him an imbecile.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Hush! He can understand what is said to him.' It was said (by the people), 'The army of 'Ad has arrived.' So, he spent a month with Mu'awiyah bin Bakr, giving him wine and entertaining him with locusts. Then, he set out until he came to the mountains of Muhrat. He said, 'O Allah! I did not come to enslave a slave, nor did I come to treat a sick person. But water Your slave what you used to water him with.' So, give Mu'awiyah bin Bakr to drink wine for a month as appreciation for the wine that he drank in his presence.' Abu Wa'il said, 'I was told that what was sent upon them (the people of 'Ad) from the wind was as much as the water that flows in a ring.'"
